She's such a monster in the series and yet so sweet in real life.
Really sweet. Would love to hang out with her.
a true mark of an incredible actress!
Gui Porto how is it possible? 😂
I know man, but she does a fake happy voice so much on the show, even when she's being actually nice part of me gets creeped out 😅 Guess you can call that another testament to her acting abilities...
Ikr, I can't believe that's Aunt Lydia, I just can't!
How can someone so scary on screen be so utterly delightful off screen? She truly more than deserved that Emmy
Emily N. She’s also just incredible in The Departed, as another fearsome, unforgettable character.
She's unbelievable . In the handmaids tail and the leftovers she plays such crazy characters yet she's so lovely
She horrified me this past Wednesday. OMG when she rang the bell.
Hopefully, you saw her on The Leftovers. Her character, Patty, was off-the-rails, batshit nuts.
Oh yes, as Aunt Lydia she looks absolutely hideous, but here, such a beautiful lady! And the Emmy story - hilarious!
FINALLY a late night host who let her talk for more than 60 seconds without interrupting her
Stephen Colbert without the adrenachrome cloud
I think that has to do with the fact that she is obviously an intelligent woman. Let's face it a lot of the actors that come on his show are not the top of the barrel as far as intellect
No wonder she got the emmy, a woman that insanely sweet and kind pulling out that much pure evil? I mean, oh my god that's insane
Lee Gary she's not "pure evil" .. why do you think June asked her to be the Godmother of the baby? In some sick kind of way she really does care about those girls the handmaids and the babies. I guess we all have our own definitions of Pure Evil but to meet your evil would be someone like Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones or even that recent case with Jennifer Rosenbaum complete psychopath
@@lauracatherine9925 When did June ask her to be her baby's Godmother? She made her promise to make sure she's safe at the Waterfords', but that's about it.
yeah i might be mixing up the scene, I just know in the same episode she asked the martha to be the babys godmother, she asked lydia to protect the baby, but i believe lydia mentions she was a godmother at some point
@@lauracatherine9925 Yes, June asks her if she's a godmother to someone, to nudge her into understanding what she is asking of her. Lydia answers that she was the godmother to her sister's son I think?
@@lauracatherine9925 i see that this is from a year ago 💀 hopefully after watching her BEAT THE SHIT out of jeanine you've changed your mind. cuz i know i have. 👁💧👄💧👁
She's cute as a button!! I can't at all see Aunt Lydia in her... it must be the makeup. But even her natural voice is different from Aunt Lydia's. That's crazy good acting. Ironically, she seems like the sweet "aunt" that you'd go to when mom says no.
It shows her raw & refined acting ability. You're spot on how tricky it is to envision Aunt L in this interview.
She deserves all the accolades..... she's so down to Earth, too.
On god. Aunt Lydia is so frightening lmao
You think she’s good in Handmaid, watch The Leftovers.
@@megalomaniac4134 Good call. That show was amazing.
I completely forgot she was in that! 😮
@@polarfroge she made that show for me. I mean everyone was amazing, but she stole every scene she was in.
I've never seen or heard of her before, but she's an amazing storyteller. I could do with a longer interview.
Same Now I want to see the show just to see more of her. She seems so 'non celebrity'.
Right? She's just living, regardless of what anyone else expects of her.
Look for the interview she did alongside Everyone's Favorite Character Actress, Margo Martindale. Never mind, here it is: www.vulture.com/2017/06/ann-dowd-margo-martindale-conversation.html
She is lovely...so wonderful in The Handmaid's Tale. A beautiful, gracious lady who deserves all the success in the world.
I agree 마이클
I love how she speaks... i love her...
Her voice is so soothing. It makes me feel calm
YESSSS
What is that accent she has, pretty ?
She sounds like Abraham Hicks, so soothing 😊
@Charlie Al has an Irish twang alright, but she's probably got the accent somewhere within the family anyway, Dowd is an Irish name, knew a few nuns that talked a lot like her, but acted like Aunt Lydia. No jokes.
Who else was smiling this whole video? Can you imagine her being the absolute sweetest thing (like she clearly is) and then having to pull out that darkness in her acting? It must be a real shock to her co-stars and it seems like she'd apologize immediately. She needs to come back. We need more of her positive energy.
Yvonne Strahovski has mentioned how she has compulsively apologized after finishing a scene as Mrs. Waterford.
me
What a lovely lady. Usually I don´t believe the guests in their gratitude - it feels like acted / pretended for me. But her I believed everything. I hope she gets more recognition.
jrfraukar The fact that it's her first late night interview makes her even more endearing. She's on there totally being herself. I was a huge fan of The Leftovers, which she co-starred in, and her performance was perfection. It's nice to see a woman of a particular age, who had been fairly unknown, being recognized for nothing more than being exceptional actor.
Need more storytellers like her on late night. Stephen loves it.
She scared me in Handmaid's Tale. She was so good.
Breeze Incognito yeah right, totally ! So scary in this show ! So it shows how much she is talented ! She has skills in acting.
Forget the handmaid's tale check her out in the leftovers. Look for the Pattie well death scene.
Same here😭 when I saw her on Masters of Sex as the protagonist's mother I got scared again immediately. But of course that's a different character & she played that beautifully as well. A talented, brilliant actor indeed❤️
That entire series is terrifying.
The more I see Ann Dowd, the more I need her in my life.
Troy Kawahara She's adorable and she played two horrible despicable characters on The Leftovers and Handmaid's
Yessssss!!!
How the HECK can this lovely women be Aunt Lydia, the most hated women I've ever seen on TV??? I loath that character for what it represents. And I see her...what a great actress to make me believe in her character when she is totally so different. Well played, Madam. You would have given Merrily Streep a run for her money.
You should see her in The Leftovers. Even more horrifying. She is a great actress
plot twist its the other way around, she's a good actress because she pretends to be lovely woman in real life, in movies she's just being herself? XD j/k
Simply because she is a titanically talented actress. She makes the transformation look effortless. Total "A League" of actors - even if she isn't as famous/a celebrity as the Hollywood leads
@@avitalgoldin2225 I feel like Patty Levin is far more likable than Aunt Lydia.
She oozes warmth and humanity. What a wonderful lady.
yeah she plays monsters in hereditary and handmaids tale.
She has to try to win you over, since her character is despicable.
She's a great story teller...
couldn't agree more !
She really is. I wanted an hour talk with her. So much wisdom and normalcy with that woman. Ugh, I'm in love
She's just so lovely! Such a talented actress to be able to play such a monster.
I have been binging the show all weekend (I'm in season 3), and she is incredible. A total monster most of the time, but laced with moments of patience, understanding, and caring. It's a testament to her acting that you can't not hate her character.
I hate the character so much, but love her as an actress. Any time she shows up in the Handmaids Tale, I am terrified. She is a wonderful person.
Good writing + good acting! It’s an amazing show/
_"The Handmaid's Tale_ is on Hulu."
Ah. Hulu. Not Netflix. Okay. That's a refreshing change.
if your in Canada you can watch it on Bravo
HBO has it too. Well, the Nordic vision has it
Sure, for Americans. I've been forced to steal the show instead of pay for it because of that. Fuck Hulu.
In the UK, we're 4 episodes behind.😠
I'm POSITIVE everyone from any first world nation can access any episode they want to online.... Find one of the thousands of sites dedicated to having every movie & show you could ever want to watch. Just make sure you have the ad blockers & virus blockers on, lol
She was brilliant in The Leftovers and also now in Handmaids Tale. What a delightful person, so talented and so truly humble! It's so nice to see her getting recognition, she deserves it ❤️
Such a genuine and brilliant light, this magnetic woman. How she talks *directly* to host and audience as if we're all just sitting around the den. With this much charisma, let's be glad she's using her powers for good.
What a delightful human being!
Ikr!
She was literally so iconic in the Handmaid's Tale, and that role was made FOR HER.
She is a treasure. Her brilliance in The Handmaid's Tale is just a teaser for her astonishing role in The Leftovers.
A Jurinic Right on. I feel the Leftovers role prepped her very well.
Excellent actress, really menacing in The Handmaid’s Tale
Just like Kathy Bates. Gorgeous and incredibly nice off screen but can pull off a character like Aunt Lydia on screen. Impressive.
She was amazing in the Leftovers!
One of the best shows ever made and she was fantastic in it!
She was so great that even though she didn't appear in most of the series, the writers and director gave the second to last episode as a gift to her
She'll forever be Patti Levin to me, first and foremost.
She said in an interview that she channeled Bill Belichick for the role of Patty
And the handmaid's tale
One of the scariest and coldest characters and the kindest and warmest person. Lovely!
Oh wow, she's so lovely
She was just on my mind. I had recently binge watched the first season of The Leftovers and had been very impressed with her. I'll have to check out the Handmaiden's Tale. Congratulations on the award!
I have this interview saved, and have watched it about four or five times now, and it still remains one of my absolute favorite interviews Stephen has ever done. She's so lovely, and wonderful, and such an extraordinary storyteller. It is shocking to know that inside her brilliant acting mind, the character of Aunt Lydia lives. Keep up the amazing work, Ann Dowd. Your talent is out of this world.
Delightful, sweet, talented, humble. She's an all around wonderful human being! If you haven't seen her in THE LEFTOVERS, fix that. 🙏
She was in that? The leader of that chain smoking cult that always wore white?
Justin M Yes, indeed she was! Patti Levin, leader of the Guilty Remnants.
You people are crazy, she was a senator in that series
The Handmaid's cast are such a nice group of people and talented actors. The difference between their roles and them in real life is so striking. Aunt Lydia and Serena Joy are so cold but Ann and Yvonne are such sweet people.
Wish my orgo (organic chemistry) prof was that honest -would have saved me thousands of dollars and years of struggle
Yikes.
Maybe it wasn't that he was not honest, maybe more like he didn't have the insight and intuition that hers did.
Ann Dowd is an absolute treasure! It was so wonderful to see her on her inaugural late night talk show appearance. Please bring her back, Stephen. Next time dig into her B’way experience.
She sucks she stole my son his name is Trust
What a great guest! She nailed her first appearance - love to see more of her!
She's a definition of delightful 😊😊😊
I can't believe this is the same person who played Patti in The Leftovers. That's the sign of a true actor, being able to disappear into a role like that.
The first time I saw Ann Dowd perform was on "Law & Order" in 1991--such a luminous, lovely young lady--and as she added to her resume, she also added a depth, complexity and breadth to her acting that I have seldom seen in any American actress. She appeared on all of the L&O incarnations, and every one of her appearances was brilliant. If I had to pick my favorite, it would be the episode "Compassion." She should have won an Emmy for that. In fact, she should have a row of them on her mantel. Congratulations, sweet girl.
Can I listen to her all day?
Two very lovely people. That statement about grief, "living in the world of pretending" that your story is the same as everyone else. It's so true and beautifully stated.
Can she come back Monday, please?
I love her, she's so sweet!!!! And everything about her is so genuine!!! In The Handmaids Tale, things tak a different turn or way... But she's a great story teller, a lovely woman!!! And she's full of smiles, and full of wisdom!!
Hi 👋
I was so happy that she won her Emmy that I didn't even mind that it wasn't for her AMAZING portrayal on "The Leftovers".
I just want to hug Ann Dowd. I believe she has a healing touch. Even her voice is so soothing.
She is absolutely adorable. Congratulations Ann.
i wish nothing but the best for this incredible human being.
She's evil as hell she stole my son his name is trust she called ACs on me because she needed money so she could pay for her Oscar award her Oscar nominee crossed her 23,000 look it up my name is Cheryl
4:49 "oh the gentleman was me!". gotta love Stephen
Oh my, what a profound interview. In just a few sentences, she tells a story as if it were a literary classic. Excellent!!
I love intimate interviews like these, so compelling. Stephen and LSSC, you must have her on again soon.
She’s also wonderfully terrifying in ‘A Handmaid’s Tale.’
She's got such a great speaking voice. That helps to make her such a great Aunt Lydia!
Unreal how she plays some of the scariest of female characters in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Leftovers, and then in real life she’s just the sweetest person with no ego! Great actress 👏🏻
She's even more scarier in real life she called ACs on me and took my son his name is trust she's the most evilest person that I ever want to meet she lives on 28th Street she's evil as hell
Oh, my gosh, this woman is a treasure we must protect her at all costs
How the heck is she so humble and so talented? I mean every performance of hers is utterly awesome
Wow, she's an absolute mood
What a wonderful human being, and actress!
She's too precious.
She is amazing. She was also on a show called the leftovers and she was so insane in that show. (Literally she played a functional crazy person) She is just such a compelling actress. Deserved every bit of that Emmy.
She’s one helluvan actress. The more I see of her work, the more I’m blown away by how Fantastic she is. (Strange how Hollywood celebrates mediocrity, while actresses like Her show what Real acting is.) Great interview... :-)
She's an angel, I wish she was my Aunt that I could visit often.
Aunt Lydia?
Before you make that wish for real, check out Aunt Lydia. Just saying...
If you saw the first episode of season 2 you would think differently of Aunt Lydia.
SoSallyCanWait Last season I was starting to give her the benefit of the doubt, now I just want her and all the other bitch aunts to suffer (the actress is great though)
Oh no boy, you don’t want her to be your aunt, trust me lol
she's absolutely lovely
I could listen to her talk for hours. What a treat of a human being
I hated her the most and wished ill on her at every episode, but watching this gives me chills and huge uncontrollable smiles and good feelings. She has to be emotionally super smart to play super evil
She is such an adorable and eloquent story teller I could have watched her go on with her tale. :)
She's evil as hell she's the most evilest person that I ever met she took my son from me my son's name is Trust
Ms Dowd's description of the feeling when your child is born gave me emotional whiplash -- I'll be smiling all day!
Oh my God - she’s wonderful. I’ve just discovered her and I could listen/watch her forevermore. She’s utterly lovely.
Such a wonderful actress and a beautiful lady, thank you for following your heart....!!!!!
She is just LOVELY!
"Stand up." "You have to walk." She is hilarious!
I was going to make a joke (+BoJack Horseman reference) about acclaimed character actresses Ann Dowd and Margo Martindale being easy to mistake for each other, but I am so enchanted by her personality that the joke has to go. I loved her in The Leftovers and in the Handmaid's Tale.
This was such a delightful interview, she has a very warm personality
Such a delightful lady.
Such a beautiful woman! Lovely 💖
Wow, I don't know who she is but I really enjoyed this interview! Looking forward to know more about her. ¡Más entrevistas así, por favor!
Vela en The Handmaid's Tale, su personaje da muchísimo miedo, es excelente.
Cindy Palacio Sí. La empezaré a ver pronto. ¡Gracias por la recomendación!
She is so lovely. I could listen to her for hours. She should make audible books.
She plays Aunt Lydia in The Testaments on Audible
Ann is a wonderful actress. She has one of those mezmerising voices. Her voice reminds me so much of Esther Hick's voice, even the tone and pauses are almost identical.
What a beautiful interview. Such a lovely person.
She is excellent in Hereditary! Great actress!
hail paimon - LOL - she is a spectacular actress.... I love her
I like her
People know her best from "The Handmaid's Tale" but my first "experience" with her was from the final episode of True Detective Season 1. Every time I see her I keep thinking of that disturbing character, lol.
Bruh she's so freakin scary in The Handmaid's Tale, this woman scared me to death in that show. But she's so sweet and lovely in real life.
Why am I still scared of her? Lol
Maybe I watched too much of The Handmaid's Tale, The Leftovers, and... Hereditary (oh god).
I feel like her voice for Aunt Lydia is very similar, but while Lydia’s seems to drip with sickly sweet poison, her real voice reminds me of everyone’s favorite grandma who gives them love and good food
She's fantastic!
I saw her years ago guesting on Law & Order and never forgot her. And considering how many guest actors have been on that show over the decades (maybe a dozen per episode), that is definitely saying something.
She is a treasure! Her portrayal of Aunt Lydia is profound. She deserves every accolade!
She's so evil in the series that I can't get away from the character while watching the interview lol, like if I only hear her voice I think "oh she's so sweet" but if I look at my screen and see her I think "I can't smile to aunt lydia" lol
So sincere and true is she.
Shes adorable
Who else is traumatized by the character she played in hereditary? 😜
Omg. I love this woman. She is so humble yet really, really funny and what an incredible talent.
I don't recall ever seeing her before in anything but will definitely have to check out The Handmaids Tale as she strikes me as an amazing person and actor.
"You've been _telling_ yourself that you are going to do this, but there's no reason _have_ to. You understand that, don't you?"
"Of _course_ I do. Look at all this _debt_ I've been racking up. You have to be _really_ established as an actor to even make a _dent_ in that. As a _surgeon,_ I can pay it all off, right off the _bat."_
lazyperfectionist1 because MURICA.
Umm, 4 years of med school, 5 years of surgical residency, a few more years of fellowship should you choose to specialize... Not exactly right off the bat, is it?
Yes, but is it worth it if you're miserable? And remember that shit rolls downhill. There are a million tales on the internet of terrible insensitive and incompetent doctors screwing up their patients' lives. They might have been competent and happy electricians or accountants or florists instead. And maybe, f it hadn't been for his stubborn father and the Great Depression, Hitler could have been a moody but inspiring art teacher.
I never implied someone should should study medicine because of money. I was merely trying to dispel the notion that doctors make loads of money instantly. Medicine is long, brutal, painful and soul crushing. One must want it and love it with all one has, if one is to survive and thrive in the profession.
isha shah -- Sorry, I was replying to lazyperfectionist1. I quite agree with you. One must want to do it. Rather the same thing with acting, really.
She’s so sweet and kind, articulate, intelligent and lovely; which goes to show what a phenomenal actress she is because Aunt Lydia is utterly terrifying and the exact opposite of her real self 🤣
When she said “aren’t they lovely?” I thought she was going to torture them 😪😂
I LOVE this woman. She killed it in The Leftovers.
She should have named a kid Nathan, so he could get Viagra junk mail delivered to N. Dowd.
All right.. Here's your thumb up.
BOOOOOOO
Beef Supreme who hurt you?
New Message had to read that twice 🤣
Or Wellen. Wellen Dowd
I've been screaming for someone to give Ann Dowd an award since her Oscar worthy turn in 2012's controversial and disturbing thriller Compliance. I personally would've awarded Dowd the Emmy for her sinister and complex turn as Patti Levin on HBO's The Leftovers. I note many here seem to have never heard of Dowd who has been in the business over 40 years. I urge you to check her imdb page. Ann appears in what promises to be the summer's most terrifying endeavor - Hereditary. I am so thrilled she is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
There’s something about when this woman speaks. I love her in Handmaid’s Tale (and by love I mean hate) and she was great in Leftovers
She's delightful.
What a wonderful surprise of a human. Lovely storyteller.
love her
Also...loved her in Garden State! She's a wonderful character actor.
