  • Ahead of the summer holidays, and in anticipation of an influx of visitors to the region, I’ve put together a short guide to an amazing day trip around East Lothian.
    In this guide I’ll share with you some of the towns, cafés, beaches, walks, and lesser known areas I’ve come to love after a couple of years exploring the area. I hope this guide will help you appreciate East Lothian in the same way as those of us lucky enough to call it home.
    Those disclaimers, again. I’m not an expert and haven’t done everything. I’m not being paid or compensated in any way to say these things, all my own opinions. I’m focusing on the coast intentionally. This day trip is based entirely around public transport, primarily East Coast Bus #124.
    This guide was shot on an iPhone 11. Drone footage kindly supplied by Cheyne. Special thanks to Sandra for the photo of Tyninghame and to Chris for introducing me to a couple of those gems in Dunbar. Edited in Lumafusion.

    One correction. You cannot get from North Berwick to Dunbar on the train by changing at Drem. The Dunbar trains do not stop at Drem. It would make sense if they did, but they don't.

      Thanks for watching - yes, someone had pointed that out to me earlier, couldn’t believe it!

    If coastlines aren’t your thing, here’s an inland alternative: starting in Edinburgh, hop on the Lothian X7 bus and take that all the way out to Haddington. For breakfast, I rate The Loft. Haddington has some lovely wee shops to explore and if you time it right, a great market. A visit to The Cheese Lady is a must if you enjoy cheese and wine. There’s a nice river walk (10K) from Haddington to East Linton along the River Tyne (though it can get overgrown at certain times of years, so mind for nettles). Once in East Linton you’ll need to swing by Bostock Bakery. From here you could continue walking all the way to Belhaven and Dunbar (another 10-12K) or jump back on the X7 and take that to Belhaven. From here, there’s the beach, John Muir Country Park, or the cliff walk in to Dunbar. As in the video, grab a chippy, and a beer at Station Yard before catching the train back to Edinburgh. And that, my friend, is a good day.

    Great vid Dan!
    Quick random question, did you switch watches (used to seeing you in an Apple Watch)? Or just a different watch for this video? Perhaps a Garmin on the wrist?

    • @DTiPNZ
      @DTiPNZ  3 года назад +1

      Good spotting! I’ve been wearing a Coros Apex recently - my Apple Watch (Series 4) was starting to struggle with battery life. Still love it but wasn’t doing its job on the longer runs. Waiting until Apple come out with something more exciting before I switch back - the Series 5/6 don’t excite me. Thanks for watching!

    Hello. Really good video. Just one point. Unfortunately you can't change at Drem for Dunbar, on train. You have to change at Musselburgh or Edinburgh

      Hey Dougie, thanks for watching and for the comment - you’re absolutely right, I completely misread what Google Maps was showing me. Thanks for the correction!

    What has Longniddry got? Let's start with getting your Alanda's fish'n'chip fix without having to go all the way to North Berwick. The 124 will drop you at Longniddry Bents No3 car park where Alanda's have a year-round pitch (fish'n'chips on the beach in the snow is an experience worth trying!) You're just a couple of feet from the sand and the rock pools - what's not to like?
    (And if you think Tyninghame's over-rated, you may not be going to the best bits. But yes - go winter or go early and get off the main drag....)

    • @DTiPNZ
      @DTiPNZ  3 года назад +1

      Very true - a chippy while watching the kitesurfers at Bents #3 is a good time! And you may be right about Tyninghame, I’ve been pretty unlucky there with the wind, and car parking. I remember one day last summer they closed the road it was so busy!

      @@DTiPNZ True dat. I think we've been just once? twice? since the first Lockdown lifted. But head LEFT out of the car park towards the beach on a crisp winter's morning and it's like heaven....
