You should have titled the video, The Deadly 1990 Car Pileup in East Tennessee. The title is misleading because it makes people think that the car crashes JUST happened.
That is done on purpose. To clickbait you into thinking such a disaster just happened so click here click here!
i agree
The "The" at the beginning of the title should've tipped you off
I heard of this long time ago I know what happened but I they should the title raw news video of the deadly 99 pile up.
RRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
As a truck driver it’s crazy how many people don’t slow down for rain fog! Omg you need a warning system: WHY? Cuz you not smart enuf to slow down when traffic ahead of you disappears? Really?
I don’t do fog or ice! Park it period!
if there's fog I think u should slow down
The thing was there was no fog until that spot so you can park it but your going to be right in it before you get the chance unless you get a warning on the CB before you get into it your kind of SOL in that situation.
It is an old incident, but the moral of this story is education. Slow down America. Always in a hurry to get to hell on time
Truth
I drove railroad crew from Front Street to other areas and back. We had a white out I was on 435 S cars & trucks acted like it clear weather. I stayed in the right lane with my flashers going; some areas was three lane a flatbed 18 wheeler came up the middle lane by me I backed off him two car distances cars started coming up behind him going to his right or left. I watched cat after cat hit the flatbed or cabin both sides when he stopped he had at that time four cars hit him some side ways in my lane I went to the shoulder passed them an kept driving making it home safely because no traffic was around me any more driving fast.
“In a hurry to get to hell on time.” Never heard that before I like it.
Having lived in that area in 1990 and before that, where the fog occurred was near the Bowaters Paper plant. Thst plant uses lots of water from the Hiawassee River and the water would be heated during the plant processing and then released. On thst particular morning, there was very little wind and the temperature was just right for fog to form. The fog detention system was installed after the crash and is still in use today and will vary the speed limit for the conditions.
Thank you for your comment, exactly what I came here for,. And to maybe hear if the system actually works, and if that plant changed any of their procedures after, like making sure what the wind is like , and temperature etc,!😏
yeah that is what i remembered hearing about the Bowater paper mill responsible for the highway pileups, i think it happened muliple times before.
When im in bad fog i always slow down. I never worry about whats in front of me, its whats coming behind me that scares me cause i know 90% of the people on the road these days refuse to slow down. Plum ignorance.
And tailgaters
Turning your flashers are the keys to be survive.
Fog is so scary
Bloody well right
Old vid certainly, but highlights that the US should require the rear fog light (red) function - for new to market vehicles, as a mandatory requirement under FMVSS.
The rear fog lamp function offers up to 20 times the luminous intensity over a vehicle's regular taillights. This represents many seconds of additional warning to following traffic, when under heavy fog conditions, rain or blizzard white-out conditions, or if caught out in wildfire smoke situations, or in dust-storms and the like.
Switch the rear fog light OFF, the moment conditions improve, and do not use the function simply because of a light mist!
The recommended practice for the function in the US, is SAE J1319.
This is an old video and the accident was almost 30 years ago. The biggest fix in my opinion was getting the paper plant to close down the pond next to the interstate. There isn't fog there like that anymore and i drive that section of 75 weekly.
I think the point of this is education and awareness. It is that time of year for fog 😉 plus I live on the other side of knoxville, closer to Sevierville. Fog gets bad here. So yeah, heads up
I definitely agree, I started driving tractor trailers in 1988, and I remember the first time I traveled through that stretch of highway, I’ve never seen fog that dense in my life, I also believe the pond from the Bowater paper plant contributed to the terrible tragedy that morning,
Drivers also must be extra cautious and slow down in limited visibility. Regardless of what causes the fog, drivers always have choices they can make to keep themselves and others safe.
Especially in 1990, most tractor trailer drivers had their CB Radios on. I would have thought enough drivers would have gotten the message. Currently, too few have their radios on. So they would not get the message.
Clickbait title
That sounds about right. Misleading is what the title creates.
The title says 1990 pileup in Tennessee! What makes that click bait?
@@sherry8894They changed the title after I complained about the title saying The 99-car Pileup in East Tennessee. It was misleading making people think it just happened.
Whatever....
@BigOvlogger I'm sure they changed it just because of you
I know this stretch of 75 very well, My first time driving South through there was in December 1980 during the night and i saw those fog warning devices and signs and i took them very serious that fog could cover the whole area. Fog was going to rise from the river and those cooling ponds just added more fog and then all those drivers drove at speed right into blind conditions. Those burning vehicles melted and destroyed the black top through there. A lot of the burned vehicles were buried in deep trenches at the sight i saw this happen. The highway department went into overdrive and got I-75 open really fast. I don't know the number of vehicles that were buried but it was a bunch of them. Hiwassee River runs by the large paper mill you see as you are crossing the Hiwassee River.
That area has always been prone to fog.
The fogs used to get really bad on top of Hernia Hill (just a nickname because there was always a truck broke down from the climb going southbound). Visibility was so bad at night that you gotta follow the lines because you can't see past your hood.
They won their argument 💯💯💯🇺🇸
this is a 30yr old news headline. miss these ol boys
Drivers fault one hundred percent.
“ Oh I can drive in any conditions, without slowing down.”
SOUNDS LIKE TODAYS DRIVERS ON THEIR DUMBPHONE
I DONT CARE
Worst stretch for fog. I remember when this happened. A few of my children’s friends lost their dads that day
And I guarantee you that there were cars speeding into the fog. They can't see ten feet in front of them but they'll do 70 mph.
back when they made nice cars and trucks
I’m 71 now drove for a LTL carrier came through Calhoun Tn 1 hour before this happened !
Someone hits the brakes and everyone behind crashes. The same thing happens in clear air. You must be very careful.
I was driving from Chattanooga to Knoxville back in 1981. A 90 mile dive took me 2 hours and 45 minutes because of the fog.I was in fog from 9pm to 11:45 pm. I couldn’t believe.
I didn’t even know about this event
Problem solved! You cured cancer!! You stopped global warming!! Kudos to John.
I'm surprised to hear how well people spoke then, no "like", "ya know", "literally", etc.
No but we got something worse, southern accents that butcher the English language to earbleeding degrees
Dang that’s sad man
CLICK BAIT
Response time was impressive! I doubt you can get that quick of a response these days.
r.i.p to those who lost their lives. respect to family and friends, sorry for your loss
My parents were involved in this accident. Thank God they escaped injury.
That sure can happen.
So the blame went on to the drivers and yet they got to sue for millions???? Yea ok what bs is that??
Ive gotten some beautiful dashcam photos of this area.
Wow,incredible
They Need To Review Fog Alley on Hwy 70 in CA near Sacramento An inversion is Most Likely the Cause of this!
I listened to the one driver with the racoon eyes in bed who said the dense fog was upon him immediately. He should have seen that coming using common sense and good judgement.
No! Slowing down is what causes this.
A lot of the cars in this video are now classics and collectible.
Wow 😮
Wasn’t smoke from a plant contributing to the fog to make it even worse . Think I saw a documentary on a crime show years ago
WASNT THAT FOG FROM A PLANT FACILITY CLOSE BY??
Clickbait 30 years old
It's not click bait. The title clearly says this happened in 1990.
@@sherry8894The title didn't have 1990 in it when they originally uploaded it, they changed it after the complaints.
Always reactive, never proactive
Final destination
Get well soon
And the electronic road signs still say. Click it or ticket. Nothing about a road hazzard or closed road . Useless lawmakers
Did they ever say it was not fog but pollution from a wood paper mill ?
I love how the guy said "the Lord was with me that day" as he just said 3 people died around him. Tough luck for them, I guess!
They don’t know how to Drive 🤣
That was awful. I remember when it happened.
I counted 100 cars!
If you can’t see can’t see a quarter of a mile in front of you maybe you should slow down.
Blame everyone else, never your own stupidest for not slowing down.
Problem is, YOU can slow down but you also risk getting your rear bumper wrapped around your neck. Even pulling off on the shoulder isn't much better. If there's no exit off the main road, you're on your own.
Lied with this title..
Pull over and stop Learn how to drive if you can't if you get into a situation where it's raining too hard or it's too foggy right away yeah but I understand if you're speeding already and then all the sudden you run into fog that's another thing
Thay needs stop 🛑 and rad yellow grenn lights pas thies lowe nowe
If i can't read the plate in front of me or see what color the stones r on the road. I instantly stop on the highway put on my elmer the safety elephant hat and go at least 5 percent of the speed that would allow me to stop within the range of vision available to me. Whenever possible jam the brakes on hard as soon as you enter the fog so all the people who entered the visibility restriction just like i did can tear the body off my car, in a wow where did that traffic come from sort of way.The main thing is to overreact quickly.
The paper mill absolutely was a major cause of that accident in the United States big business is always allowed to get off scot-free these companies need to be held more accountable for their actions in the pollution in the destruction that they've caused to this country
It's common sense to slow down and be extra cautious driving with limited visibility. Drivers fault for sure.
What about the brakes, you know the pedal that SLOWS THE DAM VEHICLE DOWN,,, USE IT
Where's all the fog at
✝️😔
Why ??????
Now you reshow again//fog fog fog
This happened on the exact day I was born
Maybe you a reincarnation of one of dem done died that day. 😮 scared of fog??
What about Bowater? What changes did they make to their water discharge procedures? They were clearly the reason for the dense fog. They clearly made changes to how they discharge their water since there have been no further incidents since they were sued and settled therefore proving their guilt.
Too stupid to put on the brakes 😂
WOW
Midwest/southern drivers still cant drive. Distracted on phones even when their car is the latest model. Wouldnt be surprised if this god forbid happens again.
When people say the Lord was with us thats why we are alive. What about the people who died? What was the Lord doing or not doing for them?
Is that John C Reily?
99 problems but a....
How come we onlybsee huge pile ups in America just take a moment and when you drive care about yourself and other and pay attention when driving.
There was a 40 car pile up on the Autobahn 2 months ago...
@MichaelLawrenceMagic OK Americaor Germany, but I'm Australian. You don't see that there, and now I have worked in over Asia for 10 years, and you don't see that here either 🧐
There is a tyrant cop that works for Madera police department that is trying to get me evicted he really needs a psychiatrist
just proves all involved don't know how to drive to the conditions, it's Laughable
I think they all need glasses
And it’s only got worse since
Or slow down the i-75 speed 😊
Wow Tennessee come on, with all your money you guys get from tourist in your big cities you should be able to afford something
Did anyone at the time thank god, or is that only for homeruns?
Eyeglasses were huge back then
Hahahaha!!! I was going to say that same thing! Lol😂
And hair.
News over 30 years old! You might as well play the O.J. Trial again.
😂
The title clearly states that it was in 1990, not any one else’s problem if you don’t pay attention.
Clickbait! A1990 accident?
What a load of crap
Just dumb ...😒🤦
Kings Hwy Va
Go faster
You should’ve titled the video the Lord was with some, but now with the others and then the investigation should’ve went on to find out what the others did to make God so mad
Slick click bait.
thumbs down and block for posting old crap!
And so they blamed on the drivers.
It is the drivers fault.
@@eligebrown8998 Give up, you win. Being suddenly blinded by fog is no excuse.
Don't be mad because yall can't read 😂
Semi drivers are the worst and have been for years. My own brother was an over the road driver and my uncle drove for UPS until he retired. I would constantly tell them that todays truckers lacked self control on the road.
You have to go digging clear back to 1990 to make sure you spread enough doom and gloom and negativity
Why is a news outlet reporting on an event 30 plus years old? 🤔
"There was about 3 fatalities right there where we were. Lord was with us that day". What a disgusting thing to say. Makes ya wonder why Lord wasn't with the ones who died.
Maybe they were atheists, muslims, hindus or buddhists? From what I've seen it appears that the worst driver's are christians. Have you ever noticed the number of random crosses along the nation's byways, highways, and interstates where there may have been a presumed crash site in which there were fatalities?
It's the way Southerners talk about events. We know what each other means. No disrespect intended.
I'm certain no one involved in this pile up should've ever been given a driver's license. 🤷🏻
keep in mind this was before Clinton let states go crazy with their own speed limits.
Posted speed then was 65 😉
So low speed limits don’t make roads safer. Noted.
Fake news to make it look recent
I blame Trump and climate change
So they CLOSE THE ROAD!! In 2024?
WOW Republicans' are gettin' it done! lol!
