    Ooh this'll be good! I love the big finish audio dramas, its the reason Colin Baker is my favorite doctor! The audio dramas really allowed him to flesh out his interpretation of the doctor and Evelyn Smythe remains my favorite companion to this day, she played off the bombastic obnoxious doctor so well like a loving aunt with a stubborn nephew. Honestly if they could take these audio series and animate them they'd be amazing! Keep up the good work Diamanda! you're the only creator from tgwtg that I still watch.

    I really appreciate you mentioning that, toward the end, Lovecraft started the path to some kind of redemption.
    I think the Lovecraft Invasion might have worked by using this "Final Days" version and confronting him with his work, namely all the bits he's trying to move away from.
    Human characters who are casually racist or intolerant coming back and he has to be confronted with what he believed.
    In an age of people constantly yelling at each other and drawing lines, a message about how even the most prejudiced of us can change would hit harder.

    See: I'm very conflicted on 'Making JK Rowling's imagination come to life' as a story. Mostly because I thin it would be INCREDIBLE...but only now, when people are seeing the Brainworms. Not back when she was one of the most popular children's authors about.
    Also: She'd sue the fuck out of anyone making the brainworm version.

    I wonder what the original version of the Lovecraft Invasion was like because there was more lines added about Lovecrafts racism due to BLM. I also think it’s hard because (to me) a lot of his hatred was because he was basically closed off to the rest of the world.

    • @DiamandaHagan
      @DiamandaHagan  2 месяца назад +1

      I dunno but assume it was basically the same with extra bits added, maybe The Doctor angrier to lovecraft at the end.

    Now that we’ve had a few years of the new formula, do you prefer the Main Range or the new X Doctor Adventures serieses? I think I prefer the Monthly Adventures because it forced me to listen to other Doctors than just Colin Baker, and now I fear my Colin Baker material will run dry

    • @DiamandaHagan
      @DiamandaHagan  Месяц назад +1

      I prefer the Monthly adventures, stories are longer and get to breathe and you can dip in and out. The boxsets are another step in the New Whoification of Big Finish.

    The Lovecraft Invasion frustrates me a lot. I think it's within an inch of doing something new and inventive but the angle it took with Lovecraft himself made them muck up.
    A lot of critique of Lovecraft's racism focuses on the most overt aspects of it. What OSP called a 'charmingly diverse Death Cult'. The horror of Innsmouth being purely derived from Good White Folk Breeding With Other Races. And, of course, his letters. While it didn't really bother getting into them, this is what I suspect the Lovecraft Invasion was mostly focused on. And all that's valid subject matter to talk about, but it stops folks getting at a deeper truth.
    The Cthulhu Mythos as a whole is based off of... well, fear of the other. It's usually framed nowadays as being about Cosmic Horror, fear of the great and powerful, and that's part of it. But it goes wider than that. There's nothing about the Deep Ones that's so much greater than us - they're fended off by the US Army. The Mi-Go are weird little alien guys, but they're not this unquestioned power that humanity could never hope to contend with. The Colour Out Of Space and Dunwich Horror are pretty conventional monster stories. Even the cosmic horror stuff dwells less on man's insignificance and more on mysteries, of the past or out in space. Stuff we don't know about that could destroy us.
    The heart of it all comes back to fear of what Lovecraft didn't understand. Mysterious horrors lurking beneath the sea, in arctic waste, in the dark between the stars. And that's *such a great thing for Dr Who to wrestle with*! It's the complete antithesis of what the Doctor is and what he stands for. A hero who thrives on discovery and knowledge, has to deal with the work of a guy who doesn't trust those things. A Lovecraft story, especially one that takes place inside his mind, should be about proving him wrong. And the Lovecraft Invasion ALMOST does that! They have the Doctor allying with Deep Ones at the end. It's a throwaway element, a quick plot beat during the resolution, but that could've really been amazing if they actually expanded on it.
    (And for a story calling folk out for just uncritically reading Lovecraft without being aware of the problematic aspects of his work, it sure does a lot of fan-style namechecking of prominent Lovecraft tropes/elements and not a lot of talking about them, huh?)
    *sigh* Well, glad you had fun with the rest of Constance and Flip together. *Really* looking forward to you getting to Hebe and the Purity Saga now. ^^ Classic fire and fury incoming! For my part, I... kinda wonder if she was meant to be more of a TERF rather than an ableist. She fits that profile almost perfectly, and her first villain moment is hating 'diversity', but the following stuff back peddles so hard on pretty much all the setup.... eh. Like I say, looking forward to that video. ^^

    Man, I wish I could like this run as much as you, but I just can't get behind the state that the Sixth Doctor has been in for the last fifteen-ish years when not with Peri. He really has had all the edges sanded off in my opinion, the most generic Doctor imaginable. I relistened to Criss-Cross a few days ago and man, you really could give those lines to Davison or McGann and it would make complete sense.
