I started cross stitching when I was 18 and taught myself. I haven't cross stitched in years and my eyesight isn't great. THIS! This is a game changer! Not only working on a diagonal with minimal counting but using a reader and being able to enlarge so my poor eyes aren't strained and I'm constantly looking back and recounting. I don't know why I haven't looked at cross stitching videos before now because I LOVE You Tube videos and learn so much from them. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and show others how you do it and that it works so well for you.
FosterChicken i totally agree using a pdf reader sure is a game changer. I’m in the same boat and need to have the pattern enlarged. And use a magnifier or readers to stitch. Just want to thank you for your kind words and so glad this has helped you 😊
Thank you Karen. I've been making my diagonal by highlighting each square in a different color but the line is a game changer...so much quicker I love it. Hope you feel better real soon.
Thanks so much. I glues I’ll stick to GoodReader on my iPad. I love Knit Companion for my knitting, but find GoodReader better. Hope your getting better
Karen, I have had problems keeping my place in cross stitch patterns so I would count stitches at least twice and then have to rip back because I was one stitch off. So frustrating. After watching your video, I am zipping along in my pattern. Thank you a hundred times over for your videos. Why is there a color chart in Good Reader and a black and white one? When the black and white one showed up, I thought I had lost my grid lines!
Regina. I am so happy you found my videos helpful. As to why a color chart as well as a black and white one I really don’t know how to answer that question. I have only ever had a b & w chart like you see in the video. Unless of course it is a chart by another company other than HAED. So companies put both in their pdf.
Could you let me know what the name is this pattern is and where to find it I love your videos I just found you recently, so I’m way behind on your videos, but I will catch up soon
Hi Vikki the chart in that video is 'Jupiters moon" it was a freebie years agoo here's the link, www.heavenandearthdesigns.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=Jupiters+moon
Hi. I'm a beginner who is getting ready to attempt my first large counted cross stitch project. I'm just wondering why you would stitch on the diagonal vs. straight across each block?
Jazzy Glass Gems you could go straight across each block if you prefer that. I go on the diagonal so as to avoid page and column lines. There is no right way. Just find a method that works for you.
Thanks Karen for the video. I’m using this and seeing good progress. Looking forward to seeing your next topic. Have you used diagonal stitching for tent stitches? Would anything change? Kitsey
fiddlebows i have not done tent stitching so i dont really know. But my thought is to do it all the same as when doing full cross if you are doing a normal half stitch. If you do a continental stitch then i would reverse the way the stitch is made. Doing one row bottom left to upper right and the next row upper right to bottom left. Carolyn mazzao’s (sp) explains it very well. Just not on the diagonal but it would work the same way
Hi Karen. I've been watching your videos on stitching HAEDs on the diagonal and I think I'm going to try it on my first one. I've decided to do my toes with an ornament. My question is this: I understand staying at the left your corner and working to the right to the edge of the diagonal then down. Which looks easy enough on square edge. But how do you start with a rounded edge? I'm putting a picture of one of the free charts on the FB HAED page for reference. Thank you.
LEAH Mcginley Good Reader is just an apple product. There are several free pdf readers that folks use on android. My friend Barb really likes XODO. Other like EzPDF. There is also FoxIt. Any one of those will do fine for diagonal stitching.
Debbie Huff unfortunately GoodReader does not count your annotations the way ezpdf does. But since i work my diagonal 10 stitches wide i just count the number of rows x10. If you have both apps there is a way. At the end of each day flatten your annotations. On your next stitching session highlight in goodreader. When done for the day open you chart in ezpdf and it will count your annotations (highlights). Then flatten. In order for this to get an accurate count you have to mark each square individually
There are many benefits. Mainly to avoid getting column or page lines. In addition it avoids all the ninja stitches. My stitches are neater. My back is neater since thread carries are covered. Since it is a very systematic way of stitching you always know where you are. No need to hunt for where you left off. Hope that helps
Patricia Fincham EzPDF is available in kindles App Store. I think it is free. At least it was when I downloaded it from there. I do not want to discourage you however I have had very little luck with this rap on my kindle. It is constantly crashing for me.. by the same token others have no,problems. I have recently tried a new to me app on my iPad ( which is also available on kindle) called knit companion. Even though for knitting it can be used for cross stitch. Has features that are game changers when working full coverage pieces
1donnalees yes i use it for cross stitch. But can be used for many other types of pdfs. I really do forget what the cost was however it was worth every penny.
The name of the app is GoodReader. The icon is a green background with file folders in white and what looks like an eye in the middle of those. Hope that helps
Noreen Manzano is your pattern a pdf? If it is not a pdf file you will need to use the freehand tool to mark off your stitches. If it is a pdf I need more info. What have you tried?
Well i downloaded a free pattern to try it first before i buy any pattern, then when i try highlighting it, it says that there is no text under the finger.. then i try highlighting the text on it, and it worked. But on the pattern itself, it doesnt work at all.
I downloaded a pdf pattern by the way.. i am kind of frustrated because i paid and just bought the app then now, i am a bit hesitant to try and buy a pattern coz i not be be able to highlight it thru this app..
Noreen it sounds like the chart itself is not in a pdf format. Try using the freehand tool ( the last icon on the toolbar) and you should be able to mark it off. Just curious what chart is it?
Thank you for showing this as I use good reader for some of my full coverage that do not work well with pattern keeper!

Thanks for the video. Easy to understand. Oh and started using the needle threading technique you showed in another video. Saves time. Love it. 🐸

Tina Pendleton hi Tina. I think we addressed this in the FB group. If you still have questions let me know
Good reader,,, is that only for Apple products or can u use it on a Android tablet
LEAH Mcginley Good Reader is just an apple product. There are several free pdf readers that folks use on android. My friend Barb really likes XODO. Other like EzPDF. There is also FoxIt. Any one of those will do fine for diagonal stitching.
Is there a way to count your stitches each day on good reader without manually counting?
Debbie Huff unfortunately GoodReader does not count your annotations the way ezpdf does. But since i work my diagonal 10 stitches wide i just count the number of rows x10. I see this quite often, but what are the benefits of diagonal stitching?

You mentioned you did your Xstitch on your Kindle using Easy PDF. How do you load Easy PDF onto your Kindle. Technology challenged.

The name of the app is GoodReader. The icon is a green background with file folders in white and what looks like an eye in the middle of those. Hope that helps
