Director Richard Linklater has made a career out of telling personal stories with universal appeal. Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, the Before trilogy, Boyhood. No matter the genre or form, Linklater’s human touch remains.
He joins us this week around the release of his latest film, Hit Man, an action-packed neo-noir that also explores the malleability of identity. Then, Linklater reflects on his athletic career in college, the health scare that ushered in a period of creative exploration, and the renegade spirit that drove his first two feature films, It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books and Slacker.
On the back-half, Linklater describes a formative Sundance memory with director Robert Altman, his first experience at the helm of a major motion picture, and the lived serendipity that inspired his Before films. To close: a Hollywood state of the union, why Richard continues to create art from the fabric of his life, and whether Sam should return to directing himself.
You can watch Sam’s directorial work here, including his short film Sebastian.

Super podcast. Another fav James Carville. Only person to remind me of my hubby, who spent time with his father in N.O.
Don't think he was a "Hitman" ha! But there is a bit of this movie EVERYONE can relate to in an abstractly competitive way. Linklater is So smart, glad your feeling better on the A-FIB. Kinda common. Good drugs out there now I hear🌞

I was really looking forward to reading Linklater's autobiography, idk why I was sure he had one published. Dissapointingly, when I realized the book hadn't been written yet, I had to settle for some long interviews and podcasts, and I am really glad I found this one! I loved how genuinly thoughtful all the questions seemed. Moreover, I loved the relaxed tone of the whole interview which I think brought out the best of Linklater since he seemed relaxed but at the same time engaged enough to elaborote on some very thoughtful concepnts and take us for a ride on his thought processes. Great work.

"debunking mode" nice way to put it. 💙🗣️
Gary Johnson role (and all actors really) acted brilliantly.
Richard's movies move along. "Hitman" Highly entertaining and SMART.

Richard Linklater's films are a Master Class of getting tip top, outstanding performances from the cast.
Back stage pass docu available for all managers one day? Companion to the book?
