FILMING and RECORDING the S & D

  • Sound - and it's recording - had always fascinated me. By the time that the S & D was closing, I had several years of experience recording trains, encouraged by the late Peter Handford's achievements. This video also takes a look at an S & D line that nearly was...
Sadly, I have to record that contributor to the film Roger Newman passed away in December 2020 - one of the all-too-many victims of Covid 19.

Happy childhood memories of rode, as I was a child mad about parrots and still am today, I loved the free flying macaws and my favourite birds there was a magnificent pair of Hyacinth macaws, which I dreamed about owning them one day, the railway wasn’t there when I visited many times as a child, that came later, I loved feeding the macaws, as they would fly down to me from the trees, there was blue & gold, green wing and scarlets, free flying, but my favourite birds was always the parrots. Had a tear in my eyes when it closed, as always thought when Betty risdon died rode would come to it’s end, as she was the passion behind rode, some of my favourite childhood memories were of rode tropical bird gardens and will never forget this living jewel that Betty & Donald Risdon brought to my life, in a dreary world.

Very interesting video with lots of research, 1966 original photography, and clear narration throughout. A joy to watch and listen to. Thank you!

Utterly priceless footage. Out investigating part of the S&D today north of Wincanton and you'd never know there was a railway there now. So sad.

Thanks Matthew - very kind of you. Great to receive appreciation of Real Sound as opposed to 'stuck-on later'!

Many thanks Philip - you may recall that we met many years ago when I was involved at Washford and it is to my eternal regret I never travelled over the line. Hence my lifetime's efforts ever since to get the Midsomer Norton project off the ground so others can enjoy a little of what this wonderful line was like. And when we come to that day when 92207 steams again and goes up the gradient towards Chilcompton that will really bring what it was like to travel behind a 9F up the line albeit not with 9 or 10 coaches!

Thank you very much for sharing this excellent yet poignant film that I do have on DVD but which is also wonderful to see here on RUclips. Having recently visited both Shillingstone and Midsomer Norton it is amazing how much progress has been made at both locations since you filmed there - and to witness the terrible wrongs of over 50 years ago being very slowly, but surely, put right. Thank you again!

Thanks for having bought the DVD as well. Too long for RUclips, hence these smaller collections.

Just working on a 2 minute short about the 1968 floods in and around Bristol., The damage to infrastructure led to disruption to trains. The first, and I hope last time, I have seen an army Duckw amphibious vehicle.
      Best Wishes,

This is a delightful behind the scenes adjunct, Philip, to Puffed Out. Rarely do we get to see how the railway film makers go about taking and compiling their films. Rarely also do we see shots such as the engine exhaust rather magically being spirited away by lineside trees, as in the film of the Branch (capital B intended ). And at Canards Grave, how was it possible to synchronise the engine exhaust beats from the lineside and then from the train? Once again, the essence of the S&D, warts and all, has been captured by your film, and this so rarely happens in the carefully curated sunshine shots of other film makers. Thank you for posting this one and your other recent videos.

Thank you, Nigel, for your insight.
I was so lucky to get the Canards Grave material. Recording was nearly ruined by someone in the distance running a hedge cutter or similar! - but when we needed a quiet background, all that stopped. Phew!
Another Sound highlight was interviewing driver Bill May, who had very kindly invited us up on his footplate.
Audio was, of course, "Wild" as they say. Whilst we had started with stopwatch timings, running the visuals over and over at critical points became necessary until a fit was achieved, which took a year - editing visuals had already taken two years. I had to watch the last trains at Evercreech Junction over and over many times to get it right..
The public showings which followed were not easy to do (projector and tape recorder in line on a board, and running from start marks three times for the three reels) , but were quite something in terms of audience response. We had no idea of how the film would be received at the first showing up in Clifton. Amateurs then did not make feature length films.
      Best Wishes,
      Philip

Great film. Have explored on foot some of what still remains of the line since my sister moved to Somerset. Sadly to young to have travelled it but Ivo Peters films and the BBC rekindled my love of steam engines.
