    Really appreciate your honesty in this video. Someone with basic experience at H&R Block tried to charge me $475 to do my taxes! And my taxes are very simple.

    Agree - I’m a CPA and I frequently recommend that people use Turbo. Barring people in approx top 10% income or complex / multi-state, the cost benefit is frequently not there to use a professional.

      Thank you for helping out those folks! Most people do not need to pay $100s to file their taxes.

    Persons that have tax credits like EIC, CTC and education credits have extremely complicated tax returns.The EIC has twice as many pages of explanation compared to the alternative minimum tax.

    ha ha ha ha, the fact that you say that there are IRS offices that are there to help you with a straight face makes me believe you have never EVER try to reach an IRS agent, it takes a lifetime and a half to talk to anyone, let alone anyone remotely competent or interested in helping taxpayers. Your only point that is fair is that new tax preparers may not add any benefit to the average taxpayer, however, seasoned and well trained CPAs, Enrolled agents and career professionals always provide value and peace of mind, specially once your level of income, investment and taxpayer career development. For instance people with different kinds of stock options, if they do their taxes by themselves I guarantee you that they would overpay taxes.

    Great advice and tips!! Another place to look is at local universities - their accounting/business schools may offer tax preparation for free. Because, you know, their students need to learn to do taxes!

    I went to a professional and got mine done and she charged me 400 dollars. Can I have this amended and go somewhere else and get mine done. She claimed I was charged that much because the software regulates the amount one has to pay and that it was the way I filed and I have multiple w2s..3, worked at 2 jobs less than a month and one for 10 months. Did she lie bc I feel she did and can I have this amended? I feel she got over on me. She typed in all my info then called me back afterwards to sign which was weird. I've been going to these people for 8 years. She usually doesn't file for me it's the older lady she work for who does. I'm reaching out to the older lady this a.m. to see if she can fix this bc I'm not happy about how much she charged me. The elderly lady that does them always charge like 100 dollars and this lady charged 400???

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Год назад

      Did you already pay and she already filed? If so, there's nothing you can do about it now. Amendments are only for if you need to change something on your taxes with the IRS (if you forgot a form or something). If you haven't filed and haven't paid, you could probably get your forms back and go somewhere else. I'm not sure if you signed a contract with them or anything. And yes, places like H&R Block do have amounts they are required to charge by the company based on how many forms you have. You might be able to argue with them to get your fees down though.

      @SmartFamilyMoney okay thanks. Unfortunately I have already paid. I think the lady that done mine just charges too much. There have been others upset as well once they find out how much they're getting back. Thanks so much.

    my tax preparer already charge me $500.oo to do my taxes because he said YOU DO STOCKS AND I NEED TO TRANSCRIBE 10 LINES LINE BY LINE ETC ... can I get my money back or call any office about it?

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  2 года назад

      Oh wow, $500 to type 10 lines seems a bit absurd. The refund policy would be based on that office - I have no idea if they'd be able to give your money back.

      If you paid $500 and you had a schedule D you getting one hell of a deal. Not really sure what the issue is here

    • @aubreycorcoran1278
      @aubreycorcoran1278 Год назад

      @@DirtDogs13 seriously, I am an Enrolled Agent and some of these complex returns take me two solid days to prepare. I catch mistakes from previous years that cost the client tens of thousands of dollars. I am not referring to the simple W-2 clients. They can go "DIY". But I have seen botched tax returns for executives who have rental income, RSUs, stock options. Not to mention those who have forgotten to include years of depreciation and go to sell a piece of real estate. I have seen the returns of dead preparers who fraudulently claimed credits on their clients' returns. The video makes zero distinction between an unenrolled preparer and an Enrolled Agent who has hundreds or thousands of continuing education credits and training under her belt and is bound to ethical guidelines set forth in our legal code. Many of my CPA and EA colleagues spend the better part of the year "getting smart" to protect their clients and their own practices. Know when you need help and when you need help, go to a credentialed preparer, people!!
