What a fascinating video. What I found most interesting was his approach to mixing surround in general. It sounds like he's not trying to put you in the middle of the stage and do unnatural things like putting instruments all around you, but rather he is using the atmos as a tool to make the experience even more natural by surrounding you with "room".
The best part of this and how we’ve been able to come along the journey with you is that this just feels like two buddies sitting and having a chin wag. Who wouldn’t want to do that with Bob Clearmountain! His compressor just sounds like magic. You’re a wizard Bob!!
I love Bob's attitude on nearly everything. He's so unassuming and has that childlike joy about music. It seems like like many old engineers and producers get jaded and cynical the more they work.
Thank you Warren and Bob! Perfect evening viewing and Walter is adorable! I’m sure Bob has to regularly store his mixes with those paws on the console 😂❤️
Bobs work with Toto is something extraordinary, even with his massive talent. Old Is New where Toto found old material in the Sony Vaults plus added some new songs is pristine thanks to Bob.
@@Producelikeapro the Johnny winter conversation reminded me of one of the best concert experiences of my life. It's was the last tour he did before his sad passing. What a summit! Loved hearing you casually chat about Muddy Waters and mix placement. Been listening to Bob’s work since the early 80’s if not earlier. Avalon indeed! He even remixed King Crimson’s Sleepless single.
Bob is the GOAT! Great to hear him talk about his rig. And it's amazing how humble he still is after all the impact he has made. He is kind of right about Atmos and movies. It is great technology which enhances playback tailored to the actual playback setup, allowing for better translations in theatres of various sizes and speaker arrays. In music, there is still plenty of things which could be objects. The question is how much you want to rely on objects. I think Andrew Scheps is using lots of objects, I prefer to just work with the bed basically. Especially in the context of music, if you are used to having a chain on your masterbus, object based mixing in Atmos makes that a total nightmare as objects don't get through the masterbus. I'm very happy that someone of the caliber of Bob Clearmountain is admitting he just basically works with the beds and that is totally sufficient for what he wants to do with minimum object use. Curious to hear his mixes in Atmos (or 5.1 for that matter).
Very nice Warren 👏🏻 I contacted Bob out of nowhere some years ago, just before he left Connecticut and relocated to L.A.-I think. At the time, I was just getting into mixing and production. H and I exchanged a few short e-mails and he even included a touch of sarcasm and humor. I appreciated that he took a moment or two out of his busy life to communicate with a complete new-be and nobody. I know a few people who have met Bob, and they all say what a humble down-to-earth guy he is. As always, thank you 🙏🏻

Wow, what a legend! I'm going to have to rewatch this a few times to let it all sink in! Also, love that he has some of the best gear on the planet, but isn't afraid to use the kind of gear we mere mortals have access to, too!
Great to hear from Bob, as always. I'm sure anything from Bob's catalogue would sound great in Immersive, but you listen to Woman in chains, and it's so 3D anyway, you could almost think it was Immersive, already 😃
THE one & only, the greatest mixer of all time, actually THE one who made & defined the concept of the "mixer" as a dedicated sonic & creative specialist - and he did it not by web bullcrap or egoflogging or "influencing"' or "youtubeing", but well before all that, he did it by the sheer quality of his work and by tangible dedication to his craft. And, being the supermodest, humble guy he is (as this interview and all others before it prove), it's no surprise that while others are very evidently trying hard to push Atmos and thus ensure all the system sales, speaker sales, and assorted necessary gear sales that are at stake here, and trying hard to convince us all that Atmos is a thing of beauty even on headphones, Bob is just doing it his way, for himself, and for a better sonic experience at his, very high sonic & artistic evel. In a nutshell, once again he is in a league of his own - and he is for real. 👍👍👍👍👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I would LOVE to hear some of bob's recollections about mixing the live aid show in philly in 85. that must have been a thrill and an incredible challenge, and hearing the recording i think he did an awesome job! very curious about the gear he used, what the mixing environment was (remote truck i suppose) and how it all went down in general. if you could ask him the next time i'd appreciate it ;) and if not - i still love all your content, thank you very much!!!

@Produce Like A Pro I hope you're doing well today I have a question for you, I see, maybe about a dozen tracks or so are being used in a mix, I know that can vary. How many tracks are on your DAW? I think you use pro tools 🤔 and on average, about how many are used in your mixing 🤔 Ray

I have a small home studio and used to get worried when one of my cats walked on my Krog Kronos. If Bob's not worried about a cat on an SSL console, I needn't worry. I hope!

Thanks Warren, and thank you Bob, wonderful interview and explanation of that rig! It's always inspiring to me to hear him talk about his work. I fire up the console and the AFL lights are on and I have to search and see where the cat has walked. (or the buss assigns or other routing.....) :) Thanks again!

I like his workflow for Atmos. So many seem to only use ProTools, but you don't have to go with that, I run Bitwig into the Dolby Atmos Renderer in real-time and it works fine. It seems like he probably lives without the realtime metadata side of the object panning and divergence without a 3D panner in the console until later in the workflow once in protools. Cool interview, many thanks.
