I watched some of your videos form the past few years and I can’t tell you how inspiring they are. I have struggled with dyslexia and dyscalculia my whole life and want to be a mechanical engineer! I have a dream to get a masters and one day a PHD. I am now a freshman in college in California and am just getting started on my math intensive journey. How did your undergraduate/masters go in the area of math and would you happen to have any advice? Thank you, and good luck on your PHD journey!
Hi, I have just seen this comment - apologise for the late reply. Thank you for the comments. In term of maths, I was OK with it. I usually went to maths café to ask questions or asked the lecturers during the office hours. I also watched different maths videos on youtube if I could not get help any other ways. Some youtubers actually posted the way how to solve problems in simpler way in comparison to the lecturer's way. Before exams, I usually went through the past papers and memorise the equations minimum 4 days before the exam date. I required longer time to memorise them. It is easier for me to memorise maths or graphs because it is not words … The way I memorise maths is by writing it down by hands intensively and repeat it over and over, and I give myself time to do it - so it is not a last-minute learning. But for memorising words, I usually type it over and over, I choose a specific font too, so it is easier for me to read it. Other than that, I only choose modules that I enjoy. For example, in my master’s degree, I decided to take classes for "fluid structure interaction" and "design and computational fluid dynamic using Ansys software” modules in comparison to "engineering management" module. However, during undergraduate degree, I choose to go to material classes because it often has graphs that I can memorise during exams, and they used pictures to show how some materials change overtime and I had to attend laboratory classes which I enjoyed. My advice: Try to experiment different ways to figure out how you learn. I understood how I learnt when I was in the 2nd year. I failed a few modules in foundation year and first year but after 2nd year I never failed any modules because I understood how I learn and what I enjoyed the most. Example on how I keep my notes: I used tablet with pen to write notes on one notes during classes so I have everything digitally, I can memorise faster if I know it is my handwriting, this is for maths ! I also have a small laptop that I can use for typing when I have to memorise words. Also, I put comments on some pdf files (in Mendeley and highlighted them) or you can use PdF annotation.
