- Kingdom Hearts 3 gameplay (and much more!): This week we got some hands on time with the EAGERLY awaited next instalment of Disney and Square Enix crossover, Kingdom Hearts 3. New fan Ellen is here not only with some info on what to expect from the upcoming KH3, but also many reasons as to why you should jump into the older titles just like she has.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will come out soon on PS4 and Xbox One, and the release date will be announced early this June.

I play the Halloween town music on loop during Halloween. And Christmas. Mostly Halloween. Or for a week after I’ve finished the game again.

They aren't really spin-offs. Some being prequels, interquels, and actual sequels rather than something else made from the series. :)

There's a ps4 port of a majority of the series. And 2.8 is only there to retcon some things and say she is still in the realm of darkness. Also back cover tells the story of that weird phone game.

oh don't worry once you beat kh3 the game will directly tell you it's not even it's final form followed by a trailer for kingdom hearts 3 2.0 4k ultra hd remastered everything but the kitchen sink edition. So you have plenty of time to catch up before then

I haven't watched the video yet, but I think if anyone ignored KH this long this is the best time to get into the series and to catch up. If someone started playing KH1 right now and went on through the most important games and at least watched the cutscenes of the others they would probably finish before KH3 realeses. Also they would have all the lore fresh when they play KH3. I've been playing the series since 2010 and I hated every single time I played a new KH and had a hard time getting a reference to a game I played years before that.

cloudsterx7 Mobile version is a very long-winded prequel. Everglow on YT edited both the PC and Mobile game to make sense. Also overlaps the story with the cgi movie.
2 mobile games and a limited time browser based game. Not to mention the fact that all of their games came out on different platforms
I used to LOVE Donald Duck, I remember reading his weekly comics when I was a child. Then KH came out and I remember 11 yo me playing for hours and drawing piles of fanart of him. I grew out of it eventually but hearing about KH3 still gives me the feelsies. Disney (and Square Enix) really created something magical.
I actually almost cried especially when I heard 'Dearly Beloved' play, not even gonna lie, I've been a fan of the KH series since it first came out, I've played every game and knowing that KH3 is actually coming out soon... It feels like a dream. We waited for so long guys and gals... Just a little more..

I'e always been a little baffled by people say KH is over-complicated. The main story's is pretty straight-forward. Bad stuff happened, go fix it with your magical key.
It's the side details and the deeper lore that's is where it gets complicated and even then I think most of that had been overblown by two decades of fancannon and long-time fans seeming to have blurred the lines between the actual game and the meta narrative..

I'm noticed you seemed to only used game footage from numbered titles. I'd list the other games you could have chosen from, but then I'd be here all day.
There's not that many really, but most of the non-numbered ones are filled with spoilers, so id believe its best they only used 1 and 2

Nah, there was some stuff from BBS and Days there. Not nearly as much as KH 1 and 2 but it was there.

KH 1 & 2, aside from being the only games to have a story worth a damn, are easily the best in the gameplay department too.

Matt D The sad thing is all the DS games just became cutscenes and text. Only the remaster of Chain of Memories (for the PS2) became playable. I think if they are they wouldn't delay on it though. It seems silly to announce it for the Xbox One (a console series that never saw Kingdom Hearts) and not for the Switch. :')

Well you almost always get cool upgrades like abilities, Health, Magic, and such. Plus the slow motion, blur effect and the bold, enchanting music.

Not quite as harsh as dark souls is. Unless you are talking about sephiroth..... he is basically ornstein 2nd form with an extra smough of suffering thrown in..... better put in another 2 ornstiens of defeat thrown in. Oh and at least 1 pool full of children’s tears too

My best and most feelsy memory of the series is when I first beat KH1 and I cried both with relief and horrifying unexpected sadness.
This series may appear childish on the outside yet it has a deep ( a little confusing to those from the outside or haven't played all the games) story, fun gameplay, and lovable characters for all to enjoy. I must say that I will always love this series and glad I grew up with it. :D
They are also doing Big Hero 6. I am happy Wreck-it Ralph is appearing yet I guess this means no world. :')

It's especially confusing if you jumped all over the place in your first run-through of the series. KH1 was the fourth game that I played. 358/2 Days was my first one, which is like the absolute WORST to start on if you don't want to be super confused. I had no idea what was going on.

I'm about to introduce my daughter to the KH games.I played 1/2 as a teenager with my little brother. It would be amazing if 3 gets finally published. Been waiting so long, almost won't believe it's here until it's in stores.
Plus, and lets not forget, the Organisation XIII pre-DDD is literally Xehanort having found 13 of the sexiest men and women in the galaxy.
Oh and yeah, I actually remember how I got into the series. My Mom had a PS2 that she bought with her to Uni but after she'd finished a several years prior, she discovered Kingdom Hearts 1 while shopping used games at the local Cash Converters. The only reason she bought it was that she's a wicked Nightmare Before Christmas fan and the back of the box has a screenshot of Sora and Jack. Inevitably, because of our lack of internet coverage, she couldn't get very far at all. On school nights, I proceeded to pick up the mantle, attempting the game. I too failed a few times, and the game sat collecting dust for about 4 years, until I was mid secondary school. I decided that, since we'd got the internet, I'd use that newfangled Google thingy to research what to do, and boy, were my eyes opened to the series. After finishing 1, I had my friend use that fancy Amazon to buy me the 2nd game (I paid him back of course) and I remember being so confused at the start, but slowly putting the pieces together and finally finishing the game. And so, today, I own all the games in both their original mediums and their HD rereleases, I have a stuffed plushie Shadow heartless, I've cosplayed Organisation members and I have a fair few of the KH Funkos, including the Halloween Town Sora. So honestly, I think it's fairly safe to say that I owe Kingdom Hearts 1 my entire gaming life.

You missed the game where you had to use cards to fight (can't remember what the game was called I'm not that caught up with all the KH stuff). I don't know about anyone else but I really enjoyed the strategy in it.

I just loved Riku mode. Only legit way to play as him in a story before 3d. Not counting the half a minute in the final battle of 2
I didn't really like Chain's battle system, but I'm glaf you enjoyed it! If you want one similar to that, Birth by Sleep will be a pretty good fit for you.

Crimson_Rogue 97 if you have ps4 you can get the 2.5 and 2.8 hd collections and have the whole series on 2 discs. Days and coded are only the cinematics though. Not sure if Re:com is playable or just cutscenes
If I could join you for that Disney marathon, Ellen, I totally would. You have me totally hyped for the new one again and particularly happy that you enjoyed the series. Another reason for me and my friends to play, though, is that they got as many original voice actors as they could get their hands on! I happen to know that Pat Carrol herself came in to voice Ursula each and every time, though she had to do it close to home. Adding Pixar to the mix is even better and I only hope they got Tim Allen and Tom Hanks to voice the English version. Not to mention John Goodman and Billy Crystal.
I remember Kingdom Hearts 2 being one of the first games I played with my dad in our little apartment as a kid. We played the demo last week at Disney: it was just like old times and my dad is completely beside himself with joy.

Is it weird that the biggest thing that got me squealing was how pretty the Laser Space Ride is? Because last time we saw it it was a plain blue with the lights lining the edges. Now it’s like space threw up on it and I love it to bits!!!
Just wanted to say I'm so glad you can join the fandom, and you are 100% right on the fan base. I still to this day cosplay as Xemnas and my friends stoll cosplay as Axel, Roxas and Demyx. To bad you don't live in America and could go to Metrocon in Tampa, Florida cause I expect this year to see alot of KH cosplays, especially if (*ginger crossed*) KH3 is announced to be released this year.

I was not expecting you to mention the fanbase but I'm so happy you did! A lot of us grew up with the series and are always so ready to get others involved! Most of us are all too eager to lend our games out to bring others in on the fun or chat for hours about the plot or even re-watch the intros because dear God they're everything! When you fight Yozora (secret boss), just try and focus on all the details behind the attacks, the visuals, the sounds and everything else. That specific fight has so many aspects of how big creating this game was, specially that final secret scene.

Sadly, I've never gotten 2.8 as I've not been interest in buying a PS4 for one game, but now I don't know. I wanna buy it on xbox 1 for convenience but I want it on PS4 because KH has been a Playstation game for me.
Never played re:coded but from the looks of the gameplay, I was better off with the cutscenes on the PS4.
Don't fret about not playing 2.8. As long as you watch Back Cover and 0.2's cutscenes, you will be fine. (I mean you played the majority of it by playing DDD).
0.2 is good but it's not a long game at all. It's not worth getting a whole console for. Just watch the cutscenes on youtube.

2.8 has DDD and 0.2 BBS as well as some stuff related to Union Cross. So it'd probably be a good idea to grab that one too.
I can't believe she didn't even talk about the music! this games has the one of the few best game soundtracks I have heard! I'd say it's in the top 5 for me! I don't know what spot this one would be in, but it's in top 5 FOR SURE!!

It really isn't that confusing to me. Even the time travel bits in 3Ds. I think if you kinda just play everything in order and read the ansem reports it starts to piece together quite well. 2.8 and the mobile game help a lot though and may require you to pay attention to minor details as they do have a big impact later on.

The Ansem and Xehanort Reports help more than I think people would initially think, and I found that a lot of people's confusion (especially regarding how Xehanort is doing what he is doing) is due to them not reading them.
J. Kelly It really isn't that crazy if you've played the games in a proper order. Of course if you have someone spew KH jargan at you, it'll sound jumbled. That applies to any topic really. Like I've seen people call something as simple as heartless and nobodies complicated just because they weren't given a proper explanation.
Great video, and informative. I've got mixed feelings about the key blade being able to "transform" into yo-yos and the like. I loved the fact that the key blade was always a classic sword style weapon.

UPDATE: KH3 was delayed after it was scheduled for a 2018 release, and instead is releasing on January 29th, 2019. It's only been delayed 1 time.
Holding Out Hope for Playable Kairi. She's the only Keyblade Master on our side at this point that we never got to use in a game.
Really hope Square-Enix is keeping secret about a Star Wars world in KH3. Considering they essentially had Lightsabers in KH2 Star Wars wouldn't be all that out of place.
I remember when the commercials for the kingdom hearts games would come on. I always thought they looked magical so I eventually bought the first game. After completing the fist game I fell in love with the series and so glad I jumped in when I did. We've been waiting for KH3 for so many years I'm so excited to finally see where the story goes.
I SWEAR that one of the conjured light images that help Sora during the Tangled key's tower attack ( 12:28 exactly ) is either Roxas or Ventus... I swear to god, that's what I'm seeing.
i have played kingdom hearts since 1 came out on the ps2. i love the series and am super excited for this third installment. i do feel the need to mention that you forgot about 2.8 which brought a couple of ds games to the console as well as told the story of the kingdom hearts mobile game in a cinematic movie in order to fill in the time frame long before kingdom hearts birth by sleep.
I played 1 and 2 with my little brother, trying desperately to translate for him while only knowing a few bits of english myself. Fun times :D (Well actually by the time we got KH2 he knew english just as well as I did)
Came out today here in the states. 1/29/19. 8 hrs in and I'm loving the hell out of it! More more more!

Kingdom Hearts 1 was released in 2002. Just letting that sink in t make us all feel old. 9 year old me will always remember the excitement I got playing through the first Kingdom Hearts for the first time.
One of the main reasons I loved playing Kingdom Hearts 2 was to see the FF characters in 3D. Wonderful, wonderful 3D...
I also want to add that it has a VERY VERY beautiful soundtrack.
The first Kingdom Hearts is actually the first game i ever beat. These games are amazing and have been since they hit the shelves (just my opinion). The second is my favorite, mainly because i haven't gotten the chance to play the third and.. i like the Pridelands a lot.. like a LOT a lot. And Ellen, if you're reading this, i highly suggest you play the first two and also Birth By Sleep for the PsP. Also maayyyybe you guys could do a throwback episode and play the first (or second) one. Love you guys, keep up the great work! And thanks for giving us amazing and diverse content, if not for you guys i never would have played almost half the games I now love (Bayonetta, L.A. Noire, and Dishonered to name a few)! So again, huge thanks for doing what you guys do!

It's alright Ellen, I teared up too when he-who-must-not-be-named's summer vacation ended too, especially after I got the context of 358/2 days to add to the cheap shot to my feels.
I cannot stress enough how underrated this series is. It's been a huge part of my life for over a decade now, and every time a new game comes out I revert to the Disney-loving 7 year old who squealed when the pretty trailer came on TV (years before I actually played the first game). I recommend the series to every one of my gamer friends, and those who play it get hooked so quickly. Really hope they actually stick to the 2018 release this time, and I can't wait to see what Squeenix reveal at E3 next month!

I bought KH1 on an incredulous whim when it first came out. All these years later, I still love the series (enough that I have three KH tattoos!) and I can't believe KH3 is FINALLY UPON US. Welcome to the fandom, Ellen!
