This is mid-70s soul-era Bowie, singing one of his greatest songs that he only performed ONCE live during his lifetime. And, yes, Prince was a massive Bowie fan. He even sang Heroes as a tribute to Bowie after he died. Bowie is like a dozen different artists all rolled into one. And Luther Vandross is one of the backing vocalists; Bowie gave him his first major break.
Loved your reaction! You are in for endless treats with Bowie. And you will be surprised again and again. He changed his style from album to album. "Win" is a great start. You are right about his voice, so versatile, so great. You might have heard "Heroes", "Space Oddity" or "Life On Mars. Hope you do more of his. I miss him dearly.
You’re quite right about Bowie switching genres. Unlike most singer/songwriters who’d stick to the genre and style they had success with, often pressured to do so by their record companies, Bowie was famous for switching things up. The album Win is from; Young Americans, was his venture into R&B and soul. His follow up Station to Station was more rock, but still had R&B elements and a very danceable track: Golden Years, which he lip synced on Soul Train. He was very proud to have been one of the first white artists to be invited on and had to get a little drunk to steady his nerves. Video of that appearance can be found on RUclips.
You go! Loved it! Don't get used to it although it's my favorite song and album. Each album is totally different. ❤❤❤ If you've heard of Luther vandross, he sang back up on this album. ❤❤❤❤
For Bowie soul and funk: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with **Luther Vandross** and his back-up singers to die for and David Sanborn on killer alto saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. [Find Luther and David both on Dick Cavett talk-show video clip..also see RUclips video of Soul Train with Bowie doing Fame and Golden Years singles] ...Also, guitarist Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). … Sample his Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure. …Tonight with Tina Turner (also with him in one of her concert videos on RUclips)... Knock on Wood and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow (Ohio Players) (from David Live in Philadelphia (extended version), 1975). “1984” (from Diamond Dogs album. Reminds me of “Shaft.” Later recorded by Tina Turner on her Private Dancer album)...from the soundtrack to the kids’ film, Labyrinth: “Underground” (w/ Black choir) and “Magic Dance.” A friend of the Black community -Bowie complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning broadcasts. Married to Somali super-model Iman. Bowie’s thing was change, every album is different. This was his soul album. His next album, Station to Station is his strongest of this style. Try the title song! Metal, funk, goth electronic, folk, Bowie’s got an album of it! It’s impossible to pigeonhole him. Fame was his big hit from Young Americans, written with John Lennon. There will never be another Bowie!

Such a great & underrated song from Bowie. Definitely check out more of his discography. One of the most influential artists of all time ☺️

One of his best.

This whole album is fantastic. Bowie called it “plastic soul”
The great David Sanborn on sax. This is his soul album.....but he can sing anything. A young Luther VanDross and Ava Cherry on backing vocals.

I think doing backing vocals on this album was Luther Vandross's first job as a professional singer, aged maybe 17.
Young Americans was mostly recorded at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios, home of "Philly Soul".
