In my opinion, you are the best chess channel on RUclips right now. Your videos are fun and educational, and I really love that you remain positive throughout the entire video, even though I know it must be frustrating to lose over and over again. I've told all my friends about your channel and they also really enjoy your content. I hope that your channel grows, because you are all in all an amazing content creator. Thank you.
Hey! I really appreciate your feedback, that’s very kind of you and I’m glad to know what specific things I’m doing right so I can keep doing them. More to come, and thank you!
I agree. I started out watching Gotham, but even though he’s funny and witty with his tangents, there’s not much opportunity to learn. Recaps and more recaps. I really like this behind the scenes process of a much much better chess player than myself. Joke that he is, I think I’d have a hard time against Martin. 😀 Great channel and I plan to keep watching.
@@iwantcheckmate I love the little tidbits you give about positions in the London, like knight to E5 and if c5 or Nc6, then c3. Really helps as a 1000 rated London player
I feel like in the round with 29 pawns you just got too careless and instantly got punished for it. All the time before that you were saying "look at this box of pawns" and "plug the holes", and in that round, as soon as you were extremely close to black king for some unfathomable reason you ditched it and went all in.
Hey bro I'm already 1:09:06 into the video and I can tell you need a break. I just want to say that you don't need to force yourself to finish the challenge in one go. I wouldn't mind having a two or three part challenge, since maybe you could have beaten Magnus earlier if it weren't for how tired you are. What I'm trying to tell you is that I'm pretty sure most if not all of your subscribers wouldn't want to see you not enjoying the content you're making. I know pretty much we asked for longer videos but it doesn't need to be at expenses of your own enjoyment. I hope my coment isn't rude. Anyways, awesome video as always.
Thank you. I really do appreciate the feedback, and it’s not rude at all, in fact this is very helpful. It hadn’t even crossed my mind to make it a two-parter since it was a really long video to record. I appreciate the suggestions, and thank you for putting in the time to write such a well thought out comment. I’ll keep this in mind for future videos, thank you for watching :)
my chess hyperfixation is starting to wane but i wanna say i learned a lot from these videos and can play a decent game now, also you should do a video on chessformer because that'd be pretty cool
Again, this random challenge has helped me solidify different areas of my fundamentals. I always struggled with deciding which pawns to use for various tactics. But now having the mantra, "Take towards the center" or "Take towards the king" will help alot!
I am pretty sure that taking towards the center was a huge mistake in this video. His flanks are weak and they get even more weak if you take towards the center and thus thin out your b or g file, which leaves the rook files just 1-2 sacrifices away from letting a queen in.
Great video! I'd be interested in seeing you revisit some of the later setups. As you mentioned you started to get tired and lose your focus, and I bet you could win with fewer pawns when you're fresh!
you totally could've won in the position at 41:13 if you pushed b4 instead, but you would still need to make around 33 more (maybe tough to find) moves
you acknowledge that the key to protecting your layers of pawns is to have them reinforcing a diagonal but still try to push your pawns forward as a horizontal line... i wonder if a different approach focusing on maintaining the V pawn structure would have been better. i am likely very wrong though :D edit: i see around the 35 minute mark you start embracing the V shape and the bot works around it. very interesting how the engine works around these tactics
Theoretically, it should have been possible to break through with actual military tactics, and a tactical envelepment with pawns on the outside, because that should force him to take with pieces and you have many pawns.
For these types of videos in the future, you could use the bisection algorithm (with some *s due to lack of continuity and choice of maximum/minimum) to more efficiently find the tipping point. It's pretty intuitive, so you don't have to worry about it being too complicated to follow.
Amazing video. You have a very "RUclipsr" voice (a nice voice, not "The quintessential jingle keys voice") and very interesting stuff. Very talented player too.
That bot read you like a book every single time until it was forced! Lol . The queen breaking through the pawns was funny as hell. You had to go RAMBO with the pawns lmao

@@killer191297 so funny I made a suggestion on this channel once and then also thought about it long after I posted it and I was like "that's never work because of ect.." lol
After doing the same thing with bishops and knights, go back to this challenge with a fresh mind and start with the number of pawns you had when you started to feel burnt out in this video. I believe you will succeed. Also, are you considering using fairy chess pieces in the future? There is a noticeable lack of RUclipsrs playing with these pieces, and I believe it would be a lot of fun seeing you comptete against chess bots with these pieces.
I agree that burning out was a big part of the silly mistakes towards the end. And thanks for bringing up fairy chess pieces, I forgot those existed and I’ll have to look into where to play with fairy pieces for a future video! Thank you
I wonder if 1 pt each accurately reflects the worth of pawns if there's lots of them, all supporting each other. And if the engine can even find (close-to) optimal lines reliably in games like this, where the pieces are so far removed from a normal game.
12:50 "g2" And at that moment... you've succesfully shoved the entire battlefield one whole row over to Magnus' side! I honestly never expected that to happen. It should make sense with enough extra pawns making it harder for Magnus to slaughter his way through, but still I think it's an impressive moment where the 5th row, on Magnus' side is the new middle. You're totally cramping him and it's going to make things hard for Magnus. Pawns can't move very far so cramped is fine for your side. I'm actually getting excited about the pawns 🤣Go pawns! 🤣Up until that moment I was still wondering how the limited movement was going to stop being boring, but this is actually getting very interesting and fun!
