I think your pricing plan fits your purpose. Your goal is obviously not to get rich, but rather to share your craft skills with others and pay for more materials to continue your joy! I hope you really enjoy your market day!
Yes, exactly! Besides I came to terms a long long time ago I will never be rich 🤣
I also yelled, " What about your yarn costs?" It seems like no-one considers it. I like your pricing strategy.
Thanks Nora!!
Totally agree on your pricing....I live in Ohio in an area that does not support craft fairs and people don't want to pay for handmade items unless they are very cheap. I've even had people ask me to take less for an item that was already priced to low.😢
I'm a little worried about that too! John keeps telling me I should set up at the flea market and I'm like no way I don't want to deal with that. You ask $10 they say will you take $5. I would not have fun like that!!
I'm in Ohio too. Where are you located?? I'm doing a craft fair next weekend
@mamadotscreations I'm in wayne county....where are you?
Allen County@@vickied6882
I'm in middle indiana and have to watch my prices closely because of my area.
A wonderful alternative to parfait chunky is Hobbii’s honey bunny is beautiful
Thanks for the info! I did order a couple colors to try but I haven’t yet.
You said exactly what I have been thinking watching other channels videos with how much they made at the markets results. They never take out the material costs to show the actual profit! I think your pricing methods is very sound. I’m the same, if I can get more money to buy more yarn then I’m happy. But for those that are making it their business they really have to do better calculations on actual cost. ❤
Make sure you take into account the market fees, gas to get to and from the market, etc…. That is all part of your expenses as well.
Yes ma’am!
I think you are doing a great job figuring out the costs of your plushies. Great job and great work. All your plushies are fantastic, I think. ❤
Thanks!!
Your explanation of cost of goods and gross vs net profit etc was very helpful thank you so much!!!
I agree pricing is very tricky! I live in nyc and minimum wage $15 per hr and when I calculate my labor for crochet items AND cost of materials is can definitely feel over priced 😮but I’m not actually selling yet so I try not to stress 😂 I just try to remind myself that I’ll figure out prices and such if and when I do start selling!
Very true! Next year our min will be $13 and goes up a dollar a year until we reach $15. So if I did this on a regular basis I would have to adjust pricing also as supply prices go up you have to adjust. Plus after you have a few under your belt I think you can adjust your pricing to deal with supply and demand type issues. Sell out super quick you might be to cheap. Never sells you might be too high. At this point its a guessing game but I have to start somewhere.
@@KnottingHookCrochet I completely agree!!! I think everything you’ve made this far is beautiful and looks top notch so I’m rooting for you and hopping things sell well when you start your markets 😊🎉
Michaels Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite and Chenille Home Slim are pretty good. I love how soft they are, they just sometimes are a nightmare to work with because of how much some colors tend to shed but thats pretty much the same with any other type of chenille yarn haha
Thanks for the tips!
I love your plushies they so clean and pretty. Thank you for this video it really going to help me a lot. I live in Miami Florida. I had my furst market like 2 monthas ago. My daughter and her boyfriend helped me so much. It was in Fort Lauderdale. A lot of customers and i sold a lot. The only thing was that the booth fee was expensive it was $100.00 it was a lot for a 6 foot table space. Thanks God I took a lot of plushies abd people were so happy and complemented my work. With your video i will know how to price the plushies. Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you so much!! Sounds like you had a great day!
Sweet snuggles lite/chenille home slim from Michael’s is my favorite yarn ever. It’s a bit bigger than parfait chunky and I appreciate that, it’s so smooth and easy to work with. Only annoying thing is sewing pieces together it tends to strip the yarn. I absolutely recommend it if you like parfait chunky. I hate Bernat blanket 😂
I’m with you on The Bernat! I do like the Michaels yarns, they need more colors! Yes when sewing it does lose all the fluff!
I bought a goose pattern and had the same issues...BUT... that was the first thing I sold! And two more the following week. What you made is so cute!! I think your pricing is fair. We have to remember our time it takes to look up patterns, gas it takes to go buy yarn... just time spent on miscellaneous that tends to get forgotten about. 😊
Thank you Bridget!
You're welcome. I keep adding to my comment. Lol
Yes absolutely, a possible solution to that add a few minutes to the time it takes to make the item to cover those expenses.
You are so right, there are so many hidden costs like gas and shipping fees, displays etc. and extra time not crocheting the specific item like unraveling yarn barf!
You just made me go down an IG rabbit hole lol! I LOVE your sleeping "birds!" Thank you for sharing :)
Oops! Those Rabbit holes can be fun. I have so many free patterns bookmarked that I have to go back and take a look at. When they come across my feed I save them and review later. LOL
Im always getting asked why some of my ponchos are more expensive, it's just the yarn price. I think your pricing is brilliant.
Thank you Sylvia!
I like Sweet Snuggles Lite and Chenille Home Slim These are both sold at Michaels. I will say that I find they are both the same in quality. I like the quality of these better than Premier. The only advantage Premier has more colors. I have been getting a lot of poorer quality from Premier lately.
Thanks for the info! Same here! I’m going to check out Michaels today☺️
Yes! I agree about the Loops & Threads yarns. Usually more availability. Larger skeins, and you can always get at least 20% off. I hope you are able to get what you need.😊
I love the Pelican. I mostly make amigurumi using sport weight wool yarn. Cotton hurts my hands. It takes me a pretty good amount of time to make patterns but i love it so much. I love your videos and learn so many different things from you. Thank you. 😊
That is awesome!
Thank you for including cost of goods. I so agree. I use premier basix acrylic mainly because I believe it looks more detailed. Plush yarn doubles or triples your.cost of goods . I am all over the place with my pricing. And also I don't think one can expect to get 20 dollars an hour to crochet. Would anyone pay them 20 an hour to create inventory for their own plush business? Also one thing no one addresses is what about paying yourself to sit at the market for sometimes 8 hours?? That's a cost as well. Said all that to say.... NO ONE is actually getting paid what they're worth.. 😊 have a great time at your market.
Totally agree that acrylic looks more detailed. My hands just can't handle too much of it. As far as paying yourself for the time at the market, I'm trying to look at that as a social outing 😂. I don't get out much working from home and all. Then after the fact I forgot to include things like bags, price tags, etc. There is a lot to this that I don't think some people think about.
what I do, I price items lower and more affordable for people at markets but I do charge more for custom orders or on Etsy because of the fees. I usually do markets in working class area and when people comes with couple of kids I want to make sure they can buy something for each kid. Always have some lower price small items, they will go for sure 🙂 Good luck and I can't wait to hear all about your inventory and your market.
Thanks 😊
I really appreciate your pricing system. The pelican is sooo cute 🥰
Thank you! 🤗
Wow, you definitely crochet fast if you make that axolotl in an hour! I’m super slow then, lol! Back in the day, the pricing theory was take the cost of your materials, triple it and that was what you charge. Like you I’ve watched a ton of videos on pricing. I’m amazed at what some charge. $20hr for labor? What? You have to charge what makes you happy, period. Again, like you, I just want to make money to buy more yarn, this is not a business for me, it’s a hobby that can pay for itself (with a little extra hopefully). That said, I’m winging my prices. If they sell to fast, I’m not charging enough, if they don’t sell, I’m charging too much, I’ll have to lower the price. Thanks for your breakdown though, it was very interesting and more than fair.
Now as far as yarn goes. Yes, the Parfait Chunky yarn is becoming a nightmare. I ordered 5 skeins from Herrschners, I got two. I ordered whit from Premier, it was awful, thin, couldn’t sew or do the magic circle with it so I wrote to Premier about it. They were obviously having an issue with it, they refunded me my money. I’m getting used to Bernat Blanket, definitely not my favorite to work with. Not as soft, a little hard to use, but I’m getting used to it. What I have fallen in love with is Michaels Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite and Chenille Home Slim. Both are super bulky six, soooo soft and very east to work with. Did you like the gray I used for my elephant in my last video. That was Sweet Snuggles Lite in color Silver. I highly recommended these (they seem exactly the same) if you haven’t tried them yet. You can order online and there are always sales going on!
Ok, I blabbed enough. Have an awesome weekend. Of to make a kit I bought on Herrschners for $5. 🦋❤️
Thanks Sue! When you first mentioned you were having a problem with the white the one I was using at the time was fine. This one though is awful and I'm not sure if it was from Premier or Herrschners.
Yes I did at least through the computer screen, like your gray. It seems though they don't always look the same in person. I think maybe I will make the trek to Springhill tomorrow, that is the closest Michaels to me and check out the Loops and Threads and Sweet Snuggles Lite at least that way I can feel it and maybe see some good colors. Thanks for your help and if we don't talk have a good trip!
I have found that the Loops and Threads is great except that it sheds and also loses the pile especially at the cut end. I handle with extreme care. Just my experience.
@@kat4005 … I haven’t had that issue with that yarn, but I have with Parfait Chunky.
I live in California and people make $20 an hour working at a gas station! So years of experience and skilled labor is absolutely worth $20 an hour. Everyone can charge what they feel comfortable with but I guarantee you every skilled crocheter deserves $20 an hour. Wish we could all make that much!
Thank u sooo much for ur time & knowledge 😁❣... I'm getting ready to sell Billy Bongs for my man to sell for me!! I'm making them in 2 different colors for football colors😍 & now cause of u I can figure out how much 😁👍❤❣.. thanks again❣
Good luck!!
My cousin works as a mechanic for a major car/truck manufacturer.
They average about the same way you did.
They also add 20 minutes for hard issues and getting the correct instruments.
Adding a few minutes to the time might be a good way to get paid for your time at the actual market.
@KnottingHookCrochet
Fixing unexpected issues should be calculated in. No one is perfect and sometimes it is necessary.
thank you....materials and time damn it!!!
I saw that paintbox yarn is like it.
Hey My Pal, I was having the same problem with Parfait Chunky being unavailable but, But, BUT I GOT LUCKY❣️❣️❣️❣️I went to AMAZON, just by chance looking to see what I might find there☺️I found all the colors I needed “ACCEPT “WHITE” of course, but they were 3/$18.95, 6/$34.99, & etc. look good because sellers sell for different prices‼️‼️I found WHITE for $6.99 “each 🤨”, but I had NONE here so I weakened & ordered 2🙃If you try going there to look, let me know how it went for you😁GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND, barbie😘
Thanks Barbie! I just dashed over and ordered the 2 most important colors I needed.
I think that the cost of the fee's are very high in US so should be added to the cost of the plushie x
The fees/cost are high on everything! Unfortunately 😟
Try ice yarns. They have EVERY kind of yarn and there are lots of comparison videos on YT to see if you might like it.
Thanks, I look into it.
I like your pricing viewpoint of selling to get money to buy more yarn lol! I would totally pay $5 for that cute octo 🥰
Thanks Nic!! I would too.
@@KnottingHookCrochet And I appreciate your rant about how people are misleading with their business terminology! Drives me nuts, but also some people are a bit...um... spacey? and forget the cost of supplies need to be considered. I have a niece that is great in medical but horrendous in business math.
@@AntisocialAuntie I think sometimes we have to go back to 3rd grade math and have things exchange hands. You give me a $1 I give you a toy now you sell that Toy for $2 how much money did you make? 😂 my older sister is like that you have to break it all down for her 🙂
@@KnottingHookCrochetDefinitely relearning things from elementary school would be good! Like quietly waiting in line 😂
Thank you for this video on your pricing strategy. It makes a lot of sense and I agree also with location and being clear about sales versus profits.
Are you able to share where you found the pattern for the mini octo? Thanks!
Sure thing, www.amigurumi.com/Sea-Animals/Baby-Octopuses/
I love this video. I was wondering myself when I was watching the other videos, that was the sales not your profit. I worked in retail for over 30 years. 🤔
Right!! The way I’m doing my pricing my hourly rate less booth fee and cc fees will be my profit. So when I do my after market video in November (I hope I have good numbers) my breakdown will be total sales -fees-materials = equals my profit at least that’s my plan 😂
@@KnottingHookCrochetThat sounds like a great plan. I sure hope you have a great profit. I have been thinking of doing this, but I am a 🐔 😆
Me too, but I'm running out of room in my house 🤣🤣@@kokosgoldfish
@@KnottingHookCrochet Me too lol
Try Chenille Home Slim from Michael's.
I just went yesterday to check it out. Thank you!
Hi Robyn just wondering what pattern ýou use for octopus so cute. Love your videos. Watching from Tasmania Australia ❤
It is a free pattern from All From Jade
Himalaya Dolphin Baby from Hobium is the same exact yarn as Premier Parfait! The only difference is the label.
Thanks Ashley! I took a 👀 and they are out of stock too 😭
Oh my! I will look around and let you know if I can find anything else!
@@clovercrochetandmore thank you that’s so nice!
Maybe you could use a bendy straw or the fat straw for the neck. Just an idea.
Pipe cleaners, I've heard of people using. It has the wire to help pose them. A straw might work I'll have to check it out.
My prices line up with yours. I also think about the fact that I love crocheting and I’m going to do it no matter what, so I’ll make a little money along the way. Same goes with the fact that I don’t want to bring everything back home.
Have you tried Sweet Snuggles Lite from Micheal’s? It’s a little thicker and I like working with it way better than the Parfait Chunky. Just not as many colors to choose from.
I was just at Michaels today checking it out. It is very much like the parfait chunky. Of course this store did not have much of a selection but I got to see it and feel it, that was my goal.
My Michael’s never had much in stock either. I usually order online. I’m pretty sure it’s on sale right now. The chenille home slim is exactly the same as the sweet snuggles.
Hobby Lobby baby chunky yarn? Compare to PC
Thank you! 😊
Be careful of hobby pricing affecting those wanting/needing to make a business out of this. The general public will then be less willing to pay higher prices for plushies from others. They don't understand all the work, practice, experience, research, learning, etc. that goes on behind the scenes.
A big factor with pricing is how much people are willing to pay in your specific location. With China Cheapies affecting people's thoughts we need to be careful of continuing the trend. People need to start viewing hard work in making plushies or other handcrafts as deserving a lot more of their money than a Chinese Cheapy or a takeaway meal that lasts a few minutes.
Well, I don't think you could say this is hobby pricing. If so the $5 octo would be $1.
@@KnottingHookCrochet 😂🤣 Lol. That would be volunteering and donation pricing! 🙈
I am so irritated by my latest premier and Hobbi shipments - most of the yarn falls apart so much that I can’t do a magic ring with it and even just gently pulling out stitches it shreds right down to the thread😱. Michael’s sweet snuggles lite, and chenille slim is so much better, but colors are limited with some extra availability if you have it shipped. Bernat blanket pale gray is lovely.
I’ve had that issue with quite a few colors this go around. I’m actually going to trek out to Michaels today to check them out I want to feel before I buy!
I've started using Honey Bunny, because I could never find the color I want in Parfait Chunky.
I've heard they also have stock issues?
Hobbii’s honey bunny is always sold out just a heads up
Of course they are. 🤣
Thank you so much for you sharing. Love your work especially your vibes
Thanks!🥰
What pattern did you use for the lil possum? He's really cute!
it's a free one on IG instagram.com/p/ChZl9zOOZ26/?img_index=1
I'm glad I'm not only one sitting and yelling at the same videos going you have to add in the cost of your yarn, polyfil, gas and travel time to buy supplies and event. I did 30+ years in retail and know that they are misleading. I will tell people my profit and they ask me my sales numbers. I said I go by profit because that is more important than my total sales. some of these guys will be really shocked when its tax time.
Yes they will!
Did you weigh one of your items that you calculated by materials to see if the price was about the same. Good luck with your market. You and I are contemporaries. Enjoy your videos.
Yes, i did the mini octo. The one that I weighed as i went vs one already made was 15 cent different. The already made one came out at the higher cost.
I feel like your skilled labor should get more than the state appointed minimum wage. You need to charge more for your time. The octo’s should be $10 at the least. Don’t undersell yourself. You have more time involved than just making them. You’re not counting the time buying your materials.
Where did you get the pelican pattern
I bought it on Etsy www.etsy.com/listing/1499382731/
May I ask why you don't factor insurance ($250/year), avg amount of gas ($50/tank), replacement parts ($10-40/hooks-needles), tent ($300+), booth rental ($25-$1500), and listing fees for online? I know customers will notice prices are different, but if I'm at a large convention or festival it can be in the thousands for rental/travel/hotels vs a local show at a school or church. I'm trying to figure out how to factor all of this in because otherwise my profit and even my self pay can completely disappear.
Because I'm not there yet. This will be my first show and it is local and most of the things you mentioned won't apply to me. I thing you need to figure out your average items sold per market and figure out what you need to add per item to cover those kind of expenses. I can tell you right off the bat I would not do a market that would cost me $1500 to set up. Regardless of how good of a market it might be.
The $1500 is an 8 week long event with an average of 160k attendance spread across the weekends. I'm just struggling to consider all the extra expenses and then averaging it across the items. I know enough about retail to know it should be added in but not enough to know how to do it properly. Your video was very informative, you mentioned experience in retail so I was hoping that perhaps you had a formula that made it easier. Thank you for taking the time and responding!@@KnottingHookCrochet
vapor gray bernat blanket is good or dark gray bernat blanket
Thank you Elisa, I will check it out!
I have three different Bernat grays. Are you looking for a good dark gray or light gray? :)
Both really, but the dark is what I need.
@@KnottingHookCrochet Just emailed you some pictures comparing the colors!!
Thank you! You're Awesome!!@@darianblocker
Hobbi and Himalayan dolphin
There is also a new yarn at joann by the name of juicy couture is looks very similar to hobbi and parfait chunky, however their shade range isn't plentiful, I am looking forward to buying the sparkly fuchsia
Thank you!
Where are you selling them, craft fairs? What about booth fees? Fuel to get to a show, shipping fees for the yarn? Do you have tables, tablecloths, price tags, display materials, signs? I think you are not even including all your expenses.
When you figure your materials cost you shipping fees are included. Most people would order enough to get free shipping anyways. As far as tables, tablecloths and display items you buy them one time and my opinion for what it's worth you would not charge that to one show it should be calculated as a yearly expense. My $35 booth fee and the little bit of gas it will take to go 10 miles is covered in my prices.
