oh my gosh, his peeking in the door had me DEAD. Also, I've been really trying to resist the urge to get a drop spindle and some fiber, and Im having a really hard time after seeing your beautiful spin!
I can see you spinning your own yarn to use in colorwork knits for the kids! It was lovely to see you so excited. Pretty darn good for first effort I would say. How special!
Welcome to the magical world of spinning. That mindful feeling you describe where the world recedes and you get in a spinning rhythm is called a state of 'flow'. It is so wonderfully calming. The endorphins are supercharged by all the lovely colour and squishiness of the fibre. Keep it up, you are a natural... and, thanks for generously sharing your charming family with us via Vlogmas in July.
Tine & Floyd should receive a medal for getting people into spinning! I got my spinning wheel after having a chat with her at my local farmer's market 😂 Well done for producing such a lovely first skein from Merino - it's not the easiest fibre to learn on! You will probably notice the difference once you start spinning the other wool top.
Hi Laura!! Good to hear you had a good time at the yarn festival and let me say that the yarn you made looked absolutely terrific! I don't know anything about spinning but girl, it was stunning!! I can't believe we're almost at the end of Vlogmas in July, I loved all your videos of this month and I was also surprised to sing to myself the "summer city" song when I ride the bike, clean the dishes or whenever I am not really thinking about what I was doing...and I swear that I've never heard that song anywhere but here😆 What can I say, it just brought me so much joy these past weeks! Really, thank you for sharing a little bit of your daily life with us, I do appreciated it and I can't wait to see what the future months will bring (especially the Christmas stuff cause I'm obsessed with it🥰)
Good job you were not talking about the Moby sweater when Mr P was peeking through the door!! 🫣 I think your spun yarn looks very good for a first attempt!
I’d been avoiding watching spinning because I already get called an old lady for knitting and didn’t need introducing to another old lady hobby 😂 looks very ASMR worthy
My husband bought me a drop spindle and floof several years ago as a surprise. I still haven't tried it but your enthusiasm and joy in trying a new skill is definitely tempting me to give it a go!
You are improving so quickly on your drop spindle. Loved your vlogmas in July and am going to miss you guys. You, Jeff and Penny have made me smile all month. Your little Penny has such joy abounding! I can’t help but smile when she giggles and grins. Love you
I got back into knitting last year after not having knit for more than a decade. Now I knit every day. Tomorrow I'm going to a yarn dyeing class. And now this spinning thing looks very cool, too. Halp! Who will save me from this rabbit hole? :D I actually have an old treadle wheel in the country cottage that is missing a piece.... and I've been thinking of figuring that one out. I have some vague memories of how my great-grandmother used a treadle wheel to spin.
You did fantastic! ❤ As a spinner, I remember the joy of spinning my first yarn .... keep doing it, it will become easier and when you are done and using it, there is just such a feeling of accomplishment 😊 something you have created with a bit of fluff and a small spindle 😊
Laura!!! Good morning love. I just get so happy when your podcast theme music starts playing. Well done on your first spin, I attempted once and haven’t picked it back up 😅. Can’t wait to see your future spins!!!
Just wanted to send a big "thank you" from my future self to you Laura, i did some cleaning and tidying in between my knitting eith your voice in my head how nice it it when the house is spotless ( well its not but spotless enough 😂) and future self will love it!
I’ve been tempted to get a drop spindle and try spinning for so long and you’ve made me even more tempted 😂 can’t wait to see your “posh” roving spun up! I’ve fallen in love with the John Arbon Appledore in Quench since you posted about it but trying to get hold of it in Australia without selling an organ is proving hard to do 😂 I’ve loved all of your videos this month Laura! I’m normally hanging out for your videos so to have one every couple of days has been a treat! I’ll miss seeing you so often! ❤️
Congratulations on joining the spinning crowd! I looooove spindles. The spindle style(Turkish or crossed arm) you have is a great one for travelling too! All in one lightweight device! It's quite the rabbit hole with the different breed specific fibers, drafting and plying technique. Spinners are as nice and welcoming as knitters. I've been dabbling in this since 2019 and will keep doing so for years to come. My fiber stash rivals my yarn stash now! Lol Here are a few resources that are worth it as you start your spinning journey. - Fleece and fiber source book - Abby Franquemont, both on RUclips and in her book/dvd Respect the spindle As for projects, I make one fiber to FO project a year. So far I've made scarfs and shawls. This year is my most ambitious yet..... I'm spinning a sweater quantity! Have fun exploring our wonderful world of fiber 🧶
Thank you so much for the resources!!! I’d absolutely love to spin a sweater quantity one day, but probably not on a drop spindle. Now I just need to convince Mr Penrose that a spinning wheel will meals a great addition to the living room 🤣🤣🤣
I moved in the middle of vlogmas in July (kind of) and so had about four left to watch. Ive just finished and have to admit to getting a little bit teary at the end. Sending you all the love and so pleased to see you feeling more comfortable and happy and excited for the future. I love your videos x
I came with work to the UK for two weeks (leaving in two days). And I really enjoyed browsing Hobby craft store 😅 Didn't see any good yarn (I was surprised that so much acrilic was on the shelves, and no sight of better fiber). But I bought some things for painting and sewing 😁
Does my eye spy pink trousers? 😊 what a lovely colour! The black ones looked really pretty aswell! Well done on your spinning! It looks quite difficult but I’d would like to give a go aswell somewhere in the future. You’re getting so good at it so quickly! I’m really going to miss Vlogmas in July! It was such fun….but… I’m looking forward to whatever is coming next, whenever that may be 🌼
i've been spinning on a wheel for a few years and I've tried spindle spinning but I wasn't great at it. Although of course practice can make near perfect. I'm spinning thick and thin art yarn for a weaving project, I love texture in weaving. I think your little skein would be perfect for weaving.
Hi Laura thank you so much for Vlogmas in July loved it and will really miss your chats. You have totally inspired me to knit my 3 adult kids a sweater for Christmas - now the challenges to see if I make it in time!!!! Thanks and enjoy your summer holidays with your beautiful children.
Love the spinning! Looks so much better then my first skein. I've actually never plied on a spindle. I'm not sure why by I'm scared to. Irrational for sure so lately I've been working myself up to just doing it. What you did showed me I can just do it. I've got a wheel as well and love that. I'm currently teaching my 6 yr old to spin. The treadling on the wheel looks so fun but I taught her on a drop spindle how to draft first. She wanted to learn and keeps coming in for 5 min to spin then leaves lol I let her do what she wants to keep the joy in it. So fun watching you find the joy in it too!
How fun to try spinning! The yarn festival looked fun and so many beautiful yarns!! How can you resist?? I am sad too about vlogmas almost being over. It has been so fun to spend July with you 💗
So nice to see you got into spinning! I recently was gifted an old Louet spinning wheel and learned to spin. It is so calming and comforting, at times even more than knitting because te motion is so repetitive and thoughtless. Enjoy your spinning journey :)
YAY, so glad you're enjoying the spinning. My first ever hand-spun was literally the worst I've ever seen; you're doing so well so quickly! I found Merino really hard to draft evenly (and still don't enjoy spinning it). Looks like you got a lovely spindle .
Long time spinner here and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with your yarn 🙂 I can’t believe that’s your first go at spinning, my first go looked VERY different to that 😂 Once you get more experienced you’ll miss being able to spin beautiful chunky yarn and for now if in any doubt just refer to it as ‘art yarn’ ☺️ welcome to the spinning rabbit hole 😊
Hello, I was one of the volunteers at The summer Wool Festival, and it will be running next year, probably the last weekend in July. Prior to COVID it was the Fibre East Festival, organised and run by a different organisation. This year was the 2nd year run by Nick, Natasha (Sheep on Mars) and Dave. So glad you enjoyed it Laura, the catering was double what we had last year and Nick and Dave are aware that it was not enough so there will be more, particularly on the Saturday which was so busy! It was great fun, look forward to seeing you there next year!
@@lyndsaymaguire5632 that’s great to hear!!! I definitely think it would be good if there was a cold food option, something that didn’t involve cooking to speed things up a bit! We had such a fun time and very much looking forward to next year!!! X
@@lyndsaymaguire5632 Thanks so much for this reply! :D I will block out that weekend especially! (and the ones around it just in case haha) Super keen to go to yarn shows but I always seem to find out about them afterwards lol

Hehe I laughed my head off when I saw it 🤣 fortunately he gave permission for me to include this little cameo 😂
I have so enjoyed your Vlogmas in July! Penny’s delight at the very end of this episode was one of pure JOY over the neon rainbow unicorn yarn!!!!
I can see you spinning your own yarn to use in colorwork knits for the kids! It was lovely to see you so excited. Pretty darn good for first effort I would say. How special!

Can’t you vlog on August 1st, kind of like a Boxing Day? 😉 Congrats on your spinning triumph. 👌🥰
The way you were talking about your hand spun mini skein had me expecting something a bit meh but Laura! It’s beautiful!! Soooo satisfying 🥰🥰
Highly recommend the Nilla the unicorn pattern and then use the handspun for the mane and tail. That’s what I did and it looks ✨magical
Skein Queen is one of my favourite uk dyers, her colourways are gorgeous!
Your yarn looks great Laura!! Such a fun episode!! Can't believe July is almost over, I'll miss your videos!!!

next time you're feeling low, rewatch the joy and pride you exude during the spinning show n' tell!!
Laura, the yarn that you bought is lovely. Good on you for having a go at spinning. Your first skein is sweet❤️
You could 'chain ply' to make it look different, easier to get the colours similar rather than barbour poll.
Maybe this new “interest “ will provide another way to relax and help inspire you! Wishing you all the best Laura!!
You did a great job for your first skein of handspun yarn. Good for you!
That yarns screams unicorn mane and tail to me!
