No good Ben. While BT can have a 100 meter LOS range, the BT chips used in cell phones all operate in the lowest power class. Range is 10 meters LOS, more typically 5 meters in a home with walls.

@@lyfandethbut even Bluetooth just to get rid of needing to plug it into your phone. You would then also need a battery, so maybe it's not super practical, but with open source, I'm sure it could be done fairly easily!

@@lyfandethI regularly get 10-20 meters of range through walls/floors on my BT devices connected to my cell phone, and in open air I often get 40-50 yards (walking away from where I set my phone down for example).

I’m really looking forward to the inventors talk at the January RARS meeting!
Since it’s all open source I’m looking forward to other clever people figuring out new uses of the hardware. It’s going to be a game changer all over again, I think, when we’ve got good Linux support for it.
And since it’s got an ESP32, it might be useful with no wired connection to a phone at all… acting as a standalone APRS node.
Also since it’s got an ESP32, there’s potential for firmware that connects to mobile devices over Bluetooth… which would open up iPhone applications.
This thing could be Meshtastic for grown ups.
