How emotional with only 10 years old.
It's amazing how Angelina can perform these "ancient" songs and melodies so well. I mean: close your eyes and imagine an old jukebox playing a disk when she sings this...... She is mastering those "old fashioned" vocal technics so well.... This song dates back to 1944.... And you can see Angelina is completely into it when she does. And that has not changed one bit: you can see that in her recent songs as well.
Angelina is saying goodbye to her home town before a long trip to the USA. It is said that she began to write her song "Oslo" on the return flight. She feels the song and makes us feel it too...
Listen to Ella sing this, then you truly realize the genius of Angelina.

Angelina realized there was no way to radically alter Ella's rendition which was
considered 'The Gold Standard' for this song, so what she did was pure genius.
Feeling that less could actually turn out to be more, she stays 'spot on' with Ella's
rendition but simply slows it down, extending the lyrical lines as if to extrude a
bit more emotional output in her performance. Ella, as you may or may not know,
was voted the #1 Jazz singer of all time and when she recorded this song, it was
done after, I'm sure, multiple 'takes' and with a totally professional ensemble of
musicians. Angelina, on the other hand, is a 10 year old girl performing the song
in a casual setting, on an out door rooftop, with simply a single guitarist keeping
time. The result, in my estimation, is the most deeply piercing rendition of the song
I have ever heard.
Her voice melts me.
This is just the way Cole Porter meant this song to be sung. He would be so proud of his song

I believe she knew that she soon would be leaving for the USA and she truly loved her home town, Oslo. The lyrics were very poignant for her. And, as always expected, it was beautifully done. She is a joy for any country.

This song is by Cole Porter and Ella Fitzgerald sang it back in the mid-50's. Angelina sang this "goodbye" song on the roof of the TV station in Oslo just before leaving Norway for Los Angeles.
She wasn't leaving she was going on holiday in the US. She moved 2 years later.
Great reaction Nick, Who wouldn't want to hear goodbye like that! This song was recorded in Oslo, before leaving for the United States. A 11 year old girl (but if she were 9 or 10 it was the same), who in perfect autonomy has so much sensitivity and musical intelligence to recalibrate a song like this and do it in such a perfect, accurate, sweet, soft way, balanced and even more so, it's simply unreal. Given the location where the show is recorded, we could say that her voice is certainly already close to heaven. She is unique, practically impossible to describe, but wonderful, always.❤🧡💛

Thanks for noticing and requesting this song Andy. It is clearly in my top five list of all time favorite covers of Angelina’s and I kind of assumed Nick had already reacted to it.
As to embodying the emotion of the song… I think Angelina has this uncanny ability to project her own present feelings into a song even though the original thoughts and emotions might not align perfectly with her own. I believe (but I’m not certain) that although Angelina was planning on returning to Oslo after this planned extended trip to the US, its purpose was to investigate moving to LA to further her singing career. I think Angelina was looking forward to this new phase of her life but felt like she was “dying a little” knowing she might be leaving her beloved Oslo (…IMO).
I appreciated seeing the awe on your face while seeing this profoundly beautiful performance Nick. It is exactly how I responded to it when I first heard it. 🎶💚👣

I got the chords and tried to sing that song. Surprisingly, what seemed like a simple song, is very tough to learn and sing.
Angelina's sophisticated precision is staggeringly good. "Genius" is not quite a good enough word for her abilities.

I think one of the impressive things is how she transforms this sad song when she smiles a few times during her performance, giving the lyrics their true meaning (the contrast between the joy of love and the sadness of separation). If we pay attention to the lyrics, we see that the song talks about itself, as a metaphor for love, when it changes from the major key to the minor key (precisely in the section where you identified Angelina's ability in making difficult melodic transitions as it were ease). The lyrics say later: "But how strange the change / from major to minor / Every time we say goodbye".
(major = happyness / minor = sadness)
Cole Porter was a master, and Angelina honors this with her wisdom as a singer.
