  • The south-west's premier 'Diesel Gala' is back, as the Swanage Railway welcomed the event back to their metals after a prolonged absence, over the weekend of May 5th - 8th. 9 diesels would see action over the weekend, covering a large variety, from small Sulzers to English Electric heavyweights. The event would feature an intensive timetable, with express services running between Swanage and Corfe Castle, and 'over the road' at Norden to the River Frome Bridge. A stopping shuttle service also laced into proceedings, working between Swanage, Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle.
Joining the resident pair of Class 33's, Class 50 - 50026 appeared fresh from a major overhaul, with the gala marking its first passenger services since its return. At the other end of the scale, and if rumours are to be believed, the weekend was a 'final fling' for 37703 as the locomotive is set to become a spares donor.
GB Railfreight would show their support for the event, with the presence of two locomotives from their stables; Class 73 - 73136, and brand new Class 69 - 69004. Only the former would be see service over the weekend, but the event would mark the first heritage line visit for a Class 69. 69004 would be positioned on display in Swanage with the cab open for visits with a donation - all proceeds going to charity.
    Locomotives:
    BR Class 25 - D7612
BR Class 33 - D6515 "Lt Jenny Lewis RN"
    BR Class 50 - 50026 "Indomitable"
    BR Class 33 - 33111
    BR Class 44 - D4 "Great Gable"
    BR Class 37 - 37703
    BR Class 31 - 31128 "Charybdis"
    GB Railfreight Class 73 - 73136 "Mhairi"
    GB Railfreight Class 69 - 69004
    BR Class 46 - D182
All footage filmed on Friday the 6th, and Saturday the 7th, of May 2022.

That was a treat for the lugholes, best remember to turn the volume down now!!!!! Good to see 31 back in BR blue, (I don't get out much!!!), well it's good to see a 31anyway. Are 2 x 33s better than 1 x 66?!!!!! I think so👍🏻(controversial, stand by for comments) Best 40 minutes I've spent for a long time, thanks Matthew☺👍🏻 (wonder when they'll get to re roof that shed!!!)

Glad you enjoyed it, Bob! It's always a pleasure seeing the 33 pair together.
I'm sure the roof is on their 'to-do' list. How far down is a good question.

Likely unrelated to the reason it failed, as it was failed due to an air leak.

Thanks very much! If word of mouth is to be believed, then the reasons behind 69004 not running here are honourable. GBRf is said to have promised the Severn Valley Railway that when a Class 69 visits for their 'Diesel Gala', they'll have the first passenger runs of a 69 on a preserved railway - this was promised before 69004 was confirmed to be coming to Swanage.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel I heard that the 69 only had air braking whilst the coaches are all vacuum braked meaning it couldn’t safely pull a train.

@@Ben-rg3rd In terms of pulling a set on its own, that's correct (though Swanage does have a small selection of dual braked coaches). However, the 73 could be used as a translator, as has been done previously with Class 66's, 59's and 56's when they've visited.
