  • This Brighton Mum has had enough and she was almost brought to tears when I popped over today, fed up and stressed out over her kids being hospitalised with serious bronchitis. They are now pumps and medication, and all sleep in one room at the back which is affected but not as bad. The coroner stated in the case of Awaab Ishak from Rochdale that black mould was a reason leading to his death. Let us not have any more cases of serious issues due to disrepair.
They are desperate to get out, to be honest, they say that Brighton and hove city council forced them to take this property even though they never bid on it and they said there were no rights to a suitability review. If she does not take they will be intentionally homeless.
They have had enough and cannot afford to wait for the number of repairs works much of which looks like fixing cheap private sector repairs in the past.
I really stank in there and the roof was lacking insulation, a lot on the floor, I worry about the brickwork also, being covered up by plaster, not many of the neighbours have this, which is unusual and I wonder if there are a lot of gaps etc.
No window ventilation and the ventilation throughout the house is really bad, this seems like a priority and seeing what’s happened to the previous cavity wall and roof, as that's very damp also.
These are old pre or post-war two up two down homes, in homes which have always had this issue going back 30 years or so.
The Family want out before Christmas and I hope Brighton and Hove City Council can accommodate this!
They certainly feel as though only after threatening the press etc things seem to be happening but still it's caused a lot of mental health for mum, and she wants somewhere she call live without these issues and I think she is right.
This story is sad due to the way the property was forced on the family and I wonder what issues the previous tenant had as they only moved here in the summer.

A recent update from mum “ so I thought I'd just give you a quick update. So I had Ben the damp supervisor around today he's recored all the new jobs and is going to chase up the existing ones. Iv also told him I'm going to withhold my rent payments until they sort my housing situation out and he said I have every right to do that. Also he's going to speak to the housing team about getting me moved into temporary accommodation until all the issues within the house has been fixed.. also we are back in hospital with nevaeh my youngest she is having difficulty breathing and needs oxygen.” For the haters here. We are trying

This sounds awful. I still chest issues even 35 years after, these places can do long-term damage. Where are you based?

We have this issue in our house. As we are homeowners, we take sole responsibility for cleaning, maintaining humidity levels and black soot mould. We use a dehumidifier to reduce condensation. Try it.

@@rossscrivener4196 easier said than done, she cleans it down, I said to do the bedroom and not leave it, but that newly build expensive attic and lack of ventilation seem big issues, so that all needs looking at.
The sad thing is this is an inherited from Mears Group, Cowboys so its likely going to cost to sort.
A dehumidifier is not a long term solution, and in fact are expensive to run. I had similar in a temporary accommodation, I would wake up with my bed soaked, ottoman that was due to hot and cold air hitting and then creating it, lovely flat, but not good. Love my 1800 or so home, natural ventilation, no mould or damp and were well built

Dehumdifieres are actually the cheapest way to maintain a sound temperature and help reduce damp. I have to be honest from this video that black spot mould didn't accumulate over a day or two. It's been left and not being cleaned or maintained regularly. My windows have trickle vents and I still have thus problem btw. Inner red brick and external red brick 1950’s build. Get a dehumidifier honestly It will be a game changer and maybe even a lifesaver.
