It’s a truth universally acknowledged that one doesn’t realise just how many books one owns until one has to move to a new house. Thought I’d unpacked them all weeks back and then came across two more boxes. I decided to make a fun challenge for myself by writing down all the names/authors of books I have that haven’t been read on strips of paper and the fold them up and put them in a jar. Take one out completely by random and I have to read that book. I still need to do the kindle ones too. But with the physical books if I start and can’t get past page 100 then the book goes in an unhaul pile along with books I’ve read but don’t want to keep.
Wish I could say the same. Unfortunately I keep a meticulous library catalog of my books so I know that in the last 10 months I have bought 427 books... Please don't tell my wife.
I've already notified MJ that I'm going to give this another go. Last time I did 10 books and thought I was hot stuff. This time I'm going to go for the 100 because my book purchases are outrageous.
I’ve read 110 books so far on the 500-book challenge. I’ve made much use of Kindle Unlimited and the library, and counted both in my tally; my thought is that (for me) this is about not acquiring in a permanent way. So volumes I need to return are fine. I’m enjoying it, and catching up with books I’ve long wanted to read, and even some I’d forgotten about. *blush*
Since my bookshelves are at maximum capacity, my perpetual “challenge” is that for every new book that I buy an older book must leave (sell, bookstore trade-in, etc.). You would think 19 bookcases would be enough, but…🤷♂️
This sounds like an interesting challenge and one that I certainly need to engage. For years, I have wanted to focus on the books I already own but then crumbled under temptation. I'm probably a Silver-Tear reader, since 50 is the maximum I completed in one year. I look forward to it.

I tend to buy a few books that I can read in a reasonable amount of time so while my shelves may not be as populus as some others I've seen on library tours on booktube most of what you do see has been read and that includes the encyclopedias I love to collect
