Dude this is awesome! First reaction to this group I’ve seen!!!!! This song quickly became one of my top 5 songs ever. And I’m normally a hard rock/ metal listener.
the town Goodnight, Texas is the geographic middle between San Francisco and Chapel Hill, NC. the two cities the bandleaders are based out of. a lot of their songs have historic connections, such as Dearest Sarah, though I don't know if there's any specific event this song is based on. I never took the sawmill to be their still, rather it was a distraction "to confound everyone and make it well known". Though the "I've got a government of my own" could possibly mean with the end of prohibition and possibly a repeal of some dry country laws he means he's got a state licensed distillery , and is no longer "moonshining"?
Very cool sound! One song or another of these guys is always on my playlist. "Tucumcari" has been my go-to lately. I had no idea these guys weren't local...their sound fits so well out here. Goodnight, Tx isn't far from me but I thought it was a ghost town? Guess I'll have to swing by there next time, as I heard they've played there three times already. Really lovin' all this gritty throwback sound that these young groups are bringing back...there's alot of different names for the style but basically it's just folk-revival or traditional folk-inspired music done by contemporary artists. To put it another way, people didn't used to have recorded music available so they had to sing songs by themselves or with family and friends. They would sing familiar tunes, old and new, with whatever skills they may or may not have possessed. This is real music...some may sneer, but like I alluded to yesterday, many people today have become shallow and pretty happy with the sterile "canned" music the industry serves them.
@David Emswiler I suspected you’d like this one and would also have known about them. And JUST WAIT until tomorrow’s song and reaction is posted-you might decide to write a version of War and Peace or perhaps go with something along the lines of “Jesus wept.” You’ll see. :-)
Hypothermia, Jesse got a trapped in a coal mine, submarines, and many more I can highly recommend. Been listening to these fine folks for years and I promise you EVERY song I’ve heard from them has been top quality, authentic, beauty. Cannot recommend them enough.
Absolutely love these guys, and they're definitely their own genre. You should check out "Jesse Got Trapped in a Coal Mine", "Uncle John Farquhar", or "Barstow". The band is named after the tiny community of Goodnight, Texas in the panhandle. The 2 founders of the band live in San Francisco and Chapel Hill, North Carolina and they figured out that was the halfway point between the 2 cities
Cool Don. Check out Metallica with San Francisco Symphony. Mandolin player is with them on some songs. I don't know his name. Not a Metallica fan but I enjoyed those shows.
@@drusmithwick7081 Thanks. I remembered he was on Howard Stern with Metallica not long ago. They introduced him but I didn't know who he was. Then I saw the pictures and connected the dots. Haven't looked for it on RUclips but I bet it is there. Stay safe. Knowledge is power!!!
@@christineems8754 I loved the whole show. There is a double album of it probably on youtube. Agreed, artists and symphony an excellent mix. Wish more would make that effort. It helps expose fans of both to a great experience and people that tend to not appreciate classical or vice-versa usually come away with a new prospective. This world needs to see that we have more in common than we think. It would make a happier world for us all. Stay safe.
They had me hooked with the 1st 3 notes. I couldn't understand the lyrics as well as I would have liked, but I would listen to this is I couldn't make out any of them.
the beat is almost exactly for copperhead road, the sawmill in my interpretation is his competition and after 33 years hes untouchable by the standard law
I'm getting more and more into this group the more I hear. I would also recommend Tucumcari by them. For a change of pace, try the group Poor Man's Poison; Feed the Machine is currently my favorite by them.
Check out the mandolinist. I don't know his name. He played with Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony and I think I saw him again with them on something else. I'll post when I remember. That was amazing. Not a Metallica fan but that was so great. This is another gem. Thanks, Dpon!
This sounds more like it came from the coal mining area of Kentucky. I wondered if government meant that they have their own "militia" to protect their operations. Charles Goodnight ran cattle over a trail named for him and a Mr. Loving. It always caught my attention because it was called the Goodnight-Loving trail. I thought it was something romantic, not a cattle drive. Maybe he has a town named for him. (I looked this up a long time ago, so recollection may be a little rusty.)

Outlaw appalachian genre is where I find this gold.
Tyler Childers, maybe Cody Jinks...Colter Wall? I'm loving it all.

Yeah thought today it's sorta like modern copperhead road
Copperhead Road was my first thought!
And I like your interpretation.
After listening a bunch, I'm wondering if HE'S the sheriff?
Has a very haunting sound. I like it!

That had an interesting sound. You should check out The South Austin Jug Band and a song called Hill Country Nights.

@Joyce McFee Great insight/info in your post. Now I have more to think about-thanks for that!!
I can't believe this is 2 in a row for me...I really don't like it. I didn't like the vocals, the music or the song...sorry.
@Phyllis Poff I have a sneaking suspicion that you’re gonna like tomorrow’s. Just a guess. :-)
I'm also with Phyllis on this one. Looking forward to tomorrow's.
