Have played piano for years and struggled for about a 5 year period trying to breakdown and applying Tritones but years ago finally got it. Just saw this and this is the best overall video on tritones. Tritones are dominant chords. Dominant chords create movement. They don't necessarily resolve. The right hand has only certain available tensions used with dominant chords and can be broken down into "chords". For example: A triad RH with G tritone LH. There are many more "chords" to use in the right hand as well. Best practical video on the subject (and believe me I've seen most of them). "Jazz" theory will answer your questions should have any on tensions.

I will be practicing. the tritone.exercise. Looks doable. Noticing that when.you put this in tritone form on the G. You have a G13 #11.. G B E A C#. I split that into two dominant chords. .I would probably.just.play a G7 with an A7 in the extension area.. I know it's a little .reduntant to use an A7..just a.choice . essentially we have an A7/G7. Hi PIANOSTYLE. I understand your point, but you might be taking away the nature of the tritone by playing a normal G7 on the left hand. Anyways, there’s no harm in trying different combinations to expand our vocabulary

Hi Diane. Thanks for the question. The tritone is derived from the Dominant 7 chord, so I could say yes. But the Tritone’s primary purpose, is in the context of my lesson, was to use it as a passing chord. I hope this helps and thanks for the support

It will give you all the chords in the key of F. I also have a lesson where I teach how to transpose. You can have a look at that to see how to transpose to another key without using a transpose button
Hello Jemaine Cupido ! congratulations for this tuto ! I do appreciate, you do great job ! +Roland Pierre Louis thanks for the positive feedback! That cannot be. It could be that he meant to say that F--B is the tritone of Db and not Eb? That would be true!
Hi there Eden. Thanks for your question. I have answered that on a few occasions in the comments section. You can use a triad a whole step above the bass note. E.g. G Bass, LH = F B, RH = Amaj Chord second inversion
However, it doesn’t always work like that since in some cases, there are different chords in the right hand, E.g. On the one chord in the lesson, there’s multiple right hand chords you could use. It is therefore best to practice the various right hand chords based on what you want to hear

Hi there. Please search in the comments section as this question has come up numerous times. I might have to redo the video and include my thinking regarding the right hand chord. Thanks for asking the question
I understood traitors. I have no idea where you got your cords from or what that had to do with traitors. I couldn't figure out how you built your cords at all. To me it was like you pulled them out of the air with no reason. You say you can substitute this for that. What for what. I haven't understood how you got any of your cords. What does bass Db have to do with LH:F B Eb or RH Bb Eb G
+Peter Murphy since you want to create tension in your sound, the right hand chord normally played is a major triad. An easy way to remember is to go a whole step above of your bass note and play that major chord. In this case it's A major in your right hand. However, you could also play other chords on a particular bass note as can be seen on the Ab passing going to the Db
Hello! Thank you for your awesome video! Only one question, when do I know to apply (3-7b or 7b-3) for my Tri-tone on left hand??? In the progression 7-3-6, will the 7 always be (7b-3) and for the 3 will it always be (3-7b)? Thanks for all you help!
Hi Victor. It depends on the sound you want to produce, but also the practicality of what your left hand is doing. It is easier on the 7-3-6 to interchange between 7b-3 & 3-7b as it makes it easier for the left hand to move that way. But due to inversions, it’s not a hard and fast rule. You could experiment with both options if you like, but that also means your right hand chord must be inverted as well. I hope this makes sense?
This is the video I have been looking for all my life. Everytime I search tritones, I get the chord substitution ones and never this. This is amazing. I know this might have been asked a number of times, but is there an intuition/theory that you use to play in the right hand as you play the tritones? I find it a bit difficult to decipher which chord goes where. I use the Db+A tritone with the G chord in the all the time and when you played something different, I got stumped. Any ideas?

Hi there Olaseni. You can play a major triad a whole step above the bass note. For example...on the G bass, your left hand tritone is F-B. Your right hand will play an A major triad in it’s second inversion form. You can practice the tritones like that as well.
Jemaine Cupido Thank you kind sir, that was my initial thought, that you will play the major chord of the note a whole step away from the bass note, but this logic does not follow when we get to the 5 of the minor chord in our case the C( E-Bflat) instead we played an A flat major chord, my assumption was that we establish the first chord by going up a whole step, and for the 5 (secondary dominant) we just go down chromatically. Please let me know if this was the way you thought about it. And I appreciate your response, I thought it was going to take a while for you to respond I was surprised by the swiftness of your response! God bless you sir!
You have a valid point...that’s why I didn’t add the right hand chord as a rule, since I sometimes play a different right hand chord. In some cases I just memorised some of the chords as various options
Wonderful Lesson. Quick question, When I play these tritones, what should my guitarists play? Should they play the regular chords? Do they need to play the passing chords/tritones too?
Hey Sherman. Thanks man! Well I am not a guitar player, so I don't know how it works for them. I've mostly played with bass players and I haven't given it much thought...I suggest the guitarist must do a similar search on how to play tritones on the guitar. I have seen those on RUclips. Hope this helps
+Scottland that is the chord that's normally associated with the G-tritone. However, if you look at the Ab tritone passing to go the 4 chord, more options can be explored. Thanks for the support.
That’s a G Dominant 6/9 flat5 chord. But look at it as a G secondary dominant.To pull you C. G Dominant is G-B-D-F ... A is the 9.. C# is the flat 5... and E is the 6 ... I hope you are familiar with 6/9 chords if not study them.. F-G are the 7th and 3rd.....E-A-C#- are the 9th, Flat5 and 6th..

What chord(right hand) should i play?
+Nic Ed did you watch the entire video? I do provide right hand chords.
Jemaine Cupido no, i mean. What theory behind that?
+Nic Ed you can play the major chord a whole step above the bass note...i.e. a G bass-Tritone (F-B) with a right hand major ( A major)
I know i’m late to the party!
But I’ve got a question, how do you decide on the chords to play on the right hand? Great video by the way.
Jemaine Cupido Fair enough!!! I appreciate your help on this!
EXCELLENT!!!
Phil Kenner thanks for the positive feedback
Wonderful Lesson.
Quick question, When I play these tritones, what should my guitarists play? Should they play the regular chords? Do they need to play the passing chords/tritones too?
Hey Sherman. Thanks man! Well I am not a guitar player, so I don't know how it works for them. I've mostly played with bass players and I haven't given it much thought...I suggest the guitarist must do a similar search on how to play tritones on the guitar. I have seen those on RUclips. Hope this helps
12:07 but why is it A major?and could it be anything else?
+Scottland that is the chord that's normally associated with the G-tritone. However, if you look at the Ab tritone passing to go the 4 chord, more options can be explored. Thanks for the support.
Jemaine Cupido ok thank you.
Jemaine Cupido How do we work out which chords are usually supposed to be played with each tritone?
Would it be possible to play a numbered voicing (right hand) that works well for every tritone (left hand) ?
*Speed up by 1.5x... it sounds rght
Great Work Jermaine !!! THANKS for the Explicit tutorial. Can I contact you on Facebook or via mail ? I have got a question to ask you. By the way I've watched most of your videos on your blog.
+Jonas SINGBO. Thanks for your feedback! Feel free to ask your questions on this platform. I am moving away from the blog since I don't have enough time to type out all those chords. Otherwise you can email me at jemaine.cupido0@gmail.com. All the best!
Thanks.
This is nice I'm have to dig back into tritones
+devohnmitchell thanks for the positive feedback bro!
Jemaine Cupido you welcome
Whyyyy Ab??? Use C or A or G...
+Marc MIMI. Sorry Marc. No specific reason why I chose that key...you are more than welcome to transpose the key one semi tone up or down. Thanks for watching and your support
Ab is a common key in Gospel, especially for bumps
Do you have an. public email adress or website? 40 year player.
Hi I have an email...jemaine.cupido0@gmail.com

D guy teaching d tritone lesson doesn't know how to teach it properly, he is just adding irrelevant note to his right hand chord without proper explanation. Get lost . U are intimidating someone
+Gladys Unwoba I'm sorry you feel that way. Thanks for the feedback
There is nothing irrelevant about art and creativity...tritones are ubiquitous..some people should keep quiet and go practice long and hard to see the revelation.
I love this video with heart and soul. Music is my passion. Thank you.
Thanks for the positive feedback Amos!
