Barbara Billingsly was the woman who could speak jive-- the ma from Leave it to Beaver. The two black dudes wrote their lines in this (Abrahm and both Zuckers all agreed they were funnier than what they originally wrote) and coached her though the scene. This movie was just as much as collaboration from the actors as it was from ZAZ-- the panicky woman getting the shit beat out of her suggested having the line of other passengers with weapons of escalating violence and ZAZ thought it was hilarious the moment she described it.
Also, the dude checking the radar range and playing basketball on the Atari is Johnathan Banks, aka Mike Ermintrout from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.
I was going to comment on that too. When he checked the "Radar' range I thought, Is that Mike? Then they showed him again and I knew I was right. Sorry but Jonathan Banks will forever be Mike to me now.
Jive ass dude ain't got no brains anyhow
I did not know that Mike worked at an airport before moving to Philly to be a cop
Banks was also one of the goons in Beverly Hills Cop
He's also the younger cop in Gremlins
The absolute seriousness of the actors is what makes the film work. And it's hardly ever mentioned, but the music is just as important in my opinion; dead-on serious.
Leslie Nielsen delivered the lines with a straight face because he didn't get the joke. Because he didn't get the joke, he played all these roles straight.
Great movie. Next one needs to be Wrongfully Accused. Leslie Nielson at his best
30:59 "I haven't felt this awful since we saw that Ronald Reagan film." 16:13 Full circle.
Now you have to see _Hot Shots!_ (a parody of _Top Gun_ ) and _Top Secret!_ .
Everybody does this so deadpan it makes it so much funnier. Some of the jokes were references to contemporary events. Some things you'd never get away with now, or even try, for fear of offending people.
I believe Kareem's line were scripted but him grabbing the front of the boy's shirt like that was not, so there is some real fear in the boy's face.
I'm told that the actor who played Johnny was a stand-up comedian, so they let him ad-lib all his lines.
Love you J!
Lol that's leave it to beavers mom Barbara Billingsley...jive turkey lololol...that was hilarious I had to watch it again 🤣
When this was made, most of the older actors weren’t getting many roles anymore. For most of them, this was their first comedy role. Barbara Billingsley (jive lady) was Mrs Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver.
Alot of people miss my favorite part of the movie. At the captains house, he is getting ready in front of a mirror, and as he walks off, his reflection walks out of the mirror and into the world.... its subtle and easy to miss
I don't think I've ever caught that and I've seen this movie dozens of times 😂
@@dustywaynemusic6297 here ya go :)

I had never noticed that even though I’ve seen it many many reactions to it. It wasn’t until someone else in the comments pointed out. If they had never pointed it out, I would have never noticed.
Finally confirmation. I asked same couple off years a go, no answers.
Question for you or anybody. In the start the movie, when hes buying a ticket does there on the backround his leatherjacket weared by that religious dude also wearing sunglasses trying to walk cool????
It always surprises me when nobody reacts to it. It's one of the best parts.
"Let's get some pictures" is one of my favorite gags, so simple yet so effective.
Along with the line of phone booths that all flip over when all the reporters run into them.
For some reason I wanna think they used that same gag in Johnny Dangerously.
Yes that one always cracked me up.
It's the little things that matter!
Peter Graves, Robert Stack, Leslie Nielson et al, were all serious actors. When the studio sent the script to Peter Graves ( Capt Over), he read, and threw it in the trash. His son came into office, asked, pulled it out and read it. Immediately turned to his father and said " Dad, you gotta do this movie".
And the rest is history. Peter Graves was magnificent in this :)
I'm sure he felt none too comfy about the moments implying that his character is a pedophile.
"No, that's just what they'll be expecting us to do". I'm always astonished how few people get the humor in that.
Another thing I don't get is no reactor laughs off the pedophile jokes, they always take it completely serious. The first time I saw the movie at like 13 I found that hilarious. I guess I have a different kind of sense of humor.
@@ckobo84 Well, now that you just gave me a heads-up on that, maybe I'll just skip watching this reaction.
@@stevejoshua9536 it’s not exactly how he is explaining it. The movie is hilarious.
@@stevejoshua9536 why would you watch a reaction to a movie you've never seen anyway? This is one of the best comedies ever
@@ckobo84 In 2022 where we are supposed to except "Drag Queen Story Hour" at public libraries and "Family Friendly Drag" shows at bars where adults give small children money to put in the under ware of Transvestites, the pedophile remarks of the captain are as funny as saying "It's cloudy today". To many it is simply normal conversation that you can have with children now.
Like the Jews in "Monty Python's Life of Brian" arguing about the rights of a man identify as a woman and have the "right to have babies". Back then it was funny and insane. Today it can get you cancelled if you do not except it as fact.

The man in the cab is Howard Jarvis, a Los Angeles businessman that was very vocal against wasteful spending. In other words, the last person that would wait in a cab with a running meter.
I never knew that, thanks. I was 6 when this came out. I saw this many times in the 80's. I know a great deal of the cast, but there's still stuff that predates me, that would probably be funnier had I been more familiar with the cast.
The majority of the actors were well know for their acting in dramatic serious movies. To see them in this comedy was hilarious!
they all knew how to play "the straight man!"... its the guy who states the situation and enhances the joke!
This is exactly why it works so well. Same with Naked Gun :)
@@johnbernhardtsen3008 Like Leslie Neilson playing straight man for Don Knott's in the reluctant astronaut
I was so glad to see you do this one. You have more life context than a 20-year old reactor. The two jive actors were friends and came up with their own dialogue.
The fact that he knew the speech was from "Win one for the Gipper" made me proud. No reactor has ever caught that. Major props.
For more of the hilarious Lloyd Bridges, Jeff and Beau's dad, "I picked the wrong week" guy - Hot Shots, a Top Gun parody
Though he has a long and distinguished film career, I will always remember him for his ability to say the most ridiculous stuff with a completely straight face.
He was hilarious in all of the Police Academy films, too!
@@Lost_n_Found_1 That's George Gaynes in Police Academy
@@LordVolkov Wow, guess I got 'em confused as a kid. Thanks!
Loves him on Seinfeld just a phenomenal actor and comedian
I first saw Llyod Bridges in "High Noon".
I just want to tell you, JL, good luck. We're all counting on you.
FYI, the joke about the Radar Range/Microwave. When they were first marketed, Microwave Ovens were named Radaranges because they used a magnetron that was developed for radar by the Raytheon corporation.
"If it doesn't say Amana, it's not a radar range."
The story goes that the inventor of the microwave oven came upon the idea while working on a RADAR and chocolate candy melted in his pocket when he stood in front of it when it was powered on.
"I take it black"... Always going to be one of the funniest movie lines ever. Along with "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?". Not many movies are as quotable.
I had a copy of Mission Impossible for the NES, and I never could see that picture of Peter Graves in the intro without hearing him ask if I liked games about gladiators.
"Have you ever been in turkish prison?"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude - when you said (about Otto the autopilot) "he's dying, he had the fish too" , I spit out the soda I was drinking, I laughed so hard!!!!!!!
One thing I learned only recently. Many people thought it was based on the original 'Airport', but it's based on a film that came out in the late 50's....called 'Zero Hour'. I think the studio already owned the script, so the guys picked it up for around $1500.00....and played it for laughs. Look up 'Airplane vs Zero Hour comparison'.
Yes! "Zero Hour!' .... "Airplane!" even stole the Apostrophe!
*Airport,* a novel by Arthur Hailey, though, is really good *if* you assume it takes place in this *Airplane!* universe.
The air traffic control chief is overworked, another atc operator is contemplating ending his life, a stewardess is pregnant by a married pilot, there's a blizzard and only two runways are barely kept open thanks to continuous efforts of snow removal crews, the airport field manager is needed to clear a plane that skidded sideways and is stuck in ice on the longer runway and he's on the road and only five minutes away but stuck behind a jacknifed semi-truck that he is helping the local authorities to clear from the road so he can get to work and do more of the same, the rich neighborhood at the end of the only open runway is having a community meeting to sue the airport for noise pollution, and a plane that has been partially blown up by a suicide bomber needs the runway that the stuck plane is on because the damaged plane is too big and too damaged to use the shorter open runway.
CHAOS! THRILLS! TAKEOFF! FLYING! LANDING! TAXI-ING! AIRPLANES! EXPLOSIONS!
*AIRPORT* by Arthur Hailey, the guy who wrote the plot sans jokes to *Airplane!* so, if you loved that banal plot about a shellshocked war vet having to take control of an airplane after the crew become too ill to fly so that a little girl can get a heart transplant in Chicago, despite his PTSD about flying, you'll probably enjoy *Airport,* maybe?
It's a novel!
It is basically the same film, with additions jokes and some things taken from one of the airport films (the girl needing a heart transplant and the nun with a guitar for example)
@@jamesalexander5623 I think you mean the Exclamation Point! 😁
Favorite line: “Why, I can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl!”
Gotta love Kareem! “Tell your old man to drag Walton and Laneer up and down the court for 48 minutes…”
Robert Stack did his own stunts in that fight scene at age 61! That man is friggin amazing.
Johnny is my favorite character. "I can make a hat, or a broach, or a pterodactyl..."😂😂😂
"It looks like a giant TYLENOL. 😠"
RIP Stephen Stucker
After this movie came out, it became a rule that the captain and first officer MUST have different meals... Just in case...
"Have you ever seen a grown man naked?" is the funniest line to me. It is so completely inappropriate and it is delivered perfectly. All the random questions to the kid in the cockpit are funny.
Those lines are a throwback to a series called Fury. Were Peter Graves played Jim Newton, Joey's adoptive father. The line appears word for word in the pilot episode.
"Do you like movies about Gladiators?" was the one that always cracked me-up the most! 😂
So deadpan, and inappropriate, but hilarious!!😁
The pilots are Roger Murdock, Clarence Oveur and Victor Basta.
Tower: Flight 209, you are cleared for takeoff.
Oveur: Roger.
Roger: Huh?
Victor: Request Vector. Over.
Oveur: What?
Roger: We have clearance, Clarence.
Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?
"How soon can you land?"
"I can't tell."
"You can tell me, I'm a doctor." - Most underrated line in the movie
While that was funny, the follow up to me, (which many people missed), was....."' 'cause of the fog", Cant you guess,..... " About another 2 hours"........................ You can't guess for another 2 hours. I was the only person in the theatre who busted out laughing, and got a lot of weird stares. Oh well.
Doctor you're wanted on the phone...
The next line was even funnier.
...and don't call me Shirley.
Pretty much anything he says in the movie.
"The passengers were given the option of fish or chicken.
"Ah yes. I had the lasagna."
Johnny is played by Stephen Stucker, a man who tragically died young from complications of being the silliest person to ever exist, if you're out there Steve I hope you know how many people have laughed thanks to you. RIP
His life was claimed by AIDS. The disease. Not the appetite suppressant. He was quite young, being only 38.
@@jnichols3 I considered mentioning that detail but I figured it might come across a little too serious in light of Stephen himself heh
Oh it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the window and wheels AND it looks like a Tylenol! It's a twister Auntie Em it's a twister! There's SO MANY MORE lines that he delivers in this movie that absolutely crack me up. Then the look on his face when he almost unplugs the whole place~that glint in his eye is classic maniac! Johnny is one of my favorite characters in this movie! Him AND the old lady who's talking jive to the two black dudes! Bwaaah Haaaa! #JohnnyRocks #NYGenXBikerLady
Those girls fighting in the bar are Girl Scouts which makes it even funnier. I watched this movie a dozen times and never realized that until someone told me. This is one of my Top 5 favorite movies of all time. I'm so happy you reacted to it!
When they show up selling cookies, you better buy them if you know what's good for ya 😀
You are the ONLY reviewer who got the "Win one for the Gipper" parody. Take a bow, my friend.
This is probably my favorite comedy of all time. This movie wouldn't even make it past the writing stage today. It would completely start riots if this movie came out today. I have watched it I don't know how many times , there are so many stuff going on in the background... it was genius. I'm a fan of stupid sarcastic jokes and this movie has more than enough for me. I always get the stink eye when people ask me "What is it?" and I describe the thing instead of answering the question (Like when she said 'A hospital? but what is it? ' and he said 'It's a building full of patients, but that's not important right now).
I love incorporating Johnny’s lines into every day jokes and conversation. Favorite: “It happened to Barbara Stanwyck!”
Johnny is the Only Character in the Movie who's Not Playing it Straight!
"Your husband and the others are alive, but unconscious."
"Just like Gerald Ford."
Oh it's white with red stripes, looks like a big Tylenol!
@@Flufferz626 lol
How 'bout some coffee, Paul?
"But at least I have a husband." One of my favorite jokes in the movie.
"We have clearance, Clarence."
"Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"
“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.”
Lol yeah I think like that when I drink😜🎄👍
I say this at work all of the time! I🤣
"That shit made me fart" is possibly THE best line I've heard in any reaction video lol!
"He had the fish, too!" Damn, that was _exactly_ the level of funniness of this video, really well done 🤣
God I love this movie. It's so absurd, I just laugh through the whole thing. Right at the beginning you said "This is gonna be silly as hell." I thought "dude you have no idea."
The woman with the eggs in her mouth... This was a magic trick that literally every low-budget magician was doing at the time.
This movie is so much better when you're of a certain age and can get all the references, especially to TV commercials in the 70s.
Johnny yelling Rapunzel! Rapunzel! and that leaping like a freaking gazelle absolutely kills me! In a lot of ways Johnny really did steal the show when it came to this movie as the expression goes. I've been watching this movie ever since it first came out and I crack up every time I see it. #JohnnyRocks #NYGenXBikerLady
'Your auto-pilot is dyin'!' He had the fish too! ' 😂🤣
You should check out THE BLUES BROTHERS NEXT!
This movie was actually Leslie Nielsen's very first comedic role. He was a well known dramatic actor before this.
Lloyd Bridges also had a great comedy career after this movie. Legend says his last words were 'Looks like I picked a bad day to quit living.'
It sounds like you're teaching your copilots how to say "Like and Subscribe". I swear that's what I heard from him several times, lol 😊
Also, Kentucky Fried Movie is their 1st movie. You should check it out.
“That’s impossible they’re on instruments!” One of my favorite scenes of all time.
I think few people realize that when the pilot passes out from the bad fish and the JET AIRLINER starts nosediving down through the sky when his shoulder pushes the control stick forward, that the sound is of an old prop airplane engine....not a four engine commercial jet.
Every time you see the aircraft from the outside or the engine revs it's a propellor.
Just when you think we're finally watching a movie without 'shut-up' jump scares, the Murder Whistle gives us 2!! 😂😂
Absolute classic. My favorite line is "I like my coffee black, like my men". It's a total WTF moment early in the movie that is tough to top.
Great line. And the little boy’s face in the reaction shot kills me every time.
Man*...
That entire interaction is word for word identical to the same interaction from "Zero Hour" with two exceptions, in "Zero Hour" they were adults and she didn't say "like my men".
“ let’s divert them into Lake Michigan, at least it won’t kill innocent lives!”
@@johnmoreland6089 So true, the line is damn funny on it's own, but the look the boy gives is just priceless.
The older lady who speaks jive was Barbara Billingsley who played the mother on the 50s TV series Leave It To Beaver.
Just hang loose, blood. She gonna catch up on the rebound on the med side.
Love it when “Keys to the Plot” are displayed to make sure we’re paying attention to the story.
lol, you had your work cut out for you doing a reaction on this one, not bad. seeing it in the theater back then, we missed half the jokes because we were laughing so hard. it was a brand new kind of comedy movie back in the day 👍
I recommend Kentucky Fried Movie for something truly crazy and funny.
It was great to see Robert stack in this may he rip. Another great movie Jay! Loved this reaction 😆
Have you seen Robert stacks little part in baseketball with Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the guys from south Park)? It was an unsolved mysteries spoof funny as hell. R.I.P to Robert though he was great
Him pulling off the sunglasses to reveal another pair of sunglasses kills me every time.

15:07 -- Yes, Lorna Patterson who played Randy did sing "The River of Jordan".😀 --- In real life, Robert Hays who played Ted Striker is a pilot and is actually qualified to fly multi-engine aircraft..
What Leslie Nielsen did so well is called deadpan humor. 😐 He had always been known as a dramatic actor in his youth, but his career and serious demeanor found new life playing deadpan in movies like this and the _Naked Gun_ series. Nobody does it better.
And what Leslie Nielsen did was rare talent, not anyone in the comedy genre can pull his acting style.
This was fun to re-watch with JL. I used to work for Bi=Lo foods and there was a woman who worked with us who ordered a coffee from the Deli/Bakery and told the woman, who she knows and worked with, that "she liked her coffee like she liked her men, hot and black." Later that day there was a rumor going around that she was having an affair with a black man. I like this movie but it's one that I can only watch once in a great while.
You have to react to 1977's The Kentucky Fried Movie which was made by the same people who made Airplane.
This was always one of my family favorites growing up, so I have seen it many times. My dad, especially, loved the dry and slapstick humor throughout. I have watched many people reacting for the first time to this movie. You, by far, was the most entertaining in a long while. So many people, especially younger folks, don't pick up on the dry humor. You seemed to understand it pretty well and just your expressions had me cracking up!
This is one of those movies that you see something different every time you watch it but you'll absolutely hate if you don't like that kind of humour . Glad you enjoyed it.
Now you need to do ZAZ's first movie: "Kentucky Fried Movie." Hilarious!
When this film was made, Ronald Reagan was ex-governor of California and was an actor before that.

If you want to see Leslie Neilson back when he was a Serious Dramatic Actor then you could watch the Sci-Fi Classic "Forbidden Planet". This was the movie that introduced Robbie the Robot.
From the Repository of Human Knowledge (Wikipedia):
Forbidden Planet is a 1956 American science fiction film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, produced by Nicholas Nayfack, and directed by Fred M. Wilcox from a script by Cyril Hume that was based on an original film story by Allen Adler and Irving Block. It stars Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen. Shot in Eastmancolor and CinemaScope, it is considered one of the great science fiction films of the 1950s,[4] a precursor of contemporary science fiction cinema. The characters and isolated setting have been compared to those in William Shakespeare's The Tempest,[5] and the plot contains certain analogues to the play, leading many to consider it a loose adaptation.
Forbidden Planet pioneered several aspects of science fiction cinema. It was the first science fiction film to depict humans traveling in a faster-than-light starship of their own creation.[6] It was also the first to be set entirely on another planet in interstellar space, far away from Earth.[7] The Robby the Robot character is one of the first film robots that was more than just a mechanical "tin can" on legs; Robby displays a distinct personality and is an integral supporting character in the film.[8] Outside science fiction, the film was groundbreaking as the first of any genre to use an entirely electronic musical score, courtesy of Bebe and Louis Barron.
Forbidden Planet's effects team was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 29th Academy Awards. In 2013, the picture was entered into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[9][10] Tony Magistrale describes it as one of the best examples of early techno-horror.[11]

Johnny, the zany air traffic controller, was played by Stephen Strucker. Sadly, Strucker was a victim of the AIDS epidemic and passed away in 1986. A true loss for the world of comedy.
Funniest movie of my entire life (I'm 55), IMHO. Funniest TV series is "Fawlty Towers". I love stories that are from before PC took over Hollywood. You could actually laugh at stereotypes. Asians committing Hari-Kari, Indians immolating themselves, Blacks speaking jive, and men attracted to young boys being considered deviants, is not permitted anymore.

At some point you need to watch Christopher Guest comedy flick, "This Is Spinal Tap", & then his later joint, "Best In Show" if haven't seen, bro?! The latter is about the "Superbowl" of dog shows!🏆🐕 You'll have to keep in mind what makes them so great is the fact that he comes up with a general plot & then gets his ensemble of actors to improvise the scenes. Fun Fact: In a 2008 interview, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told the story of being on a European flight and asked to sit in an empty seat in the cockpit during takeoff so the crew could say they flew with Roger Murdoch.
White-Red Zone Fact: Regarding the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same voice artists who had made the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. At the real airport, the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there's no stopping in the red zone (except for transit buses). They were also married to each other in real life.
Casting Choice Fact: Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker chose actors such as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Leslie Nielsen because of their reputation for playing no-nonsense characters. Until this film, these actors had not done comedy, so their "straight-arrow" personas and line delivery made the satire in the movie all the more poignant and funny. Bridges was initially reluctant to take his role in the movie, but his sons persuaded him to do it.
