I think rather than being a three-game trend, it's more of Ethan Winters trend. Like 7 and 8 were both 1st person pov because the protagonist of both was Ethan. With the 3rd person POV, it's been Leon, Claire, Jill, and Chris. Plus, if they wanted to keep the three-game trend, they would've made RE2 remake fixed camera.
I only just recently crammed in RE2R, RE3R, RE7, and RE8 back to back, and I'd totally be fine if they continued Ethans story. He can still totally come back, and if it's not him, Mia or Rose are still totally options. I don't know, but the way that ppl are expecting main line cast members coming back - I feel like Capcom wants to try the RE6 formula again, but fix their mistakes from that game in RE9.
