People don't subscribe to your channel for a backdrops flash, fancy music. Your channel has a chill vibe, which I like. You always have good book recommendations.
Very much seconding this vote for a chill vibe. All my favourite youtubers are the ones that make it feel as if I'm hanging out with a friend and you're exceptionally good at that, Lydia.
Thank you :) and that is the reason i watch other channels is good book ideas so happy that is the case. Also happy my experiments never ruin the relaxed nature here ~ I'd say it reflects my pretty chill life.
I think your channel is great and I loved the way you tackled this topic. I think most book channels that have experienced unusual growth (mine included) have got lucky with the algorithm and managed to ride that wave for a bit. For me it was one video that was explosive and a few that have just been consistently good performers. I don’t really know why that is, often I think it’s just that you’ve (by chance) put up the right video at the right time.
It is magic :D and luck and certainly dependability! I think that is the other side of the coin when people say 'be consistent'. A show needs to be dependable, which you absolutely are in that there is always something in every video of interest, whether that be a book title, a review, or insight on bookish topics. I'd have to say that any explosive growth in booktube is as you said; unusual.
The not recording if you don't feel made up is so relatable and the thing I struggle with the most when trying to post more regularly 😭 I do think algorithm suppression of horror topics is a big factor, which is especially frustrating when clickbait euphemistic true crime stuff does so well.
It is such a 'lightning in a bottle' thing when it comes to popularity - can you imagine our shows if they came out like they are but fifteen years ago? I have a feeling they would be a whole different thing in terms of searchability since horror book shows were so rare and the robots didn't have as many red flags to hand out :D
I have been a bookblogger the last 18 years with not many readers and less readers now since people hardly reads blogs anymore. But I do it for fun and I do it for me. On RUclips I prefer to watch the small channels that hasn't all the polished and edited videos. It feels more homely and real. 💛
Agreed, and same. There seemed to be a boom of book blogging and I'm greatful for those that keep writing. It's really an exercise for ourselves and is indeed fun!
Thank you! All of my favourite youtubers are bad haha, and you are a favourite! I added the links to Olly and Rachels videos in the description too, as well as Regina's podcast (with James, Right Brain Café) where they talk about no one caring (when we do bad, good, or ugly even!). I honestly debated even putting this one public since I get a little weird when talking about how bad I truly am at this! :D
@@typicalbooks I'm a Right Brain Café podcast subscriber. I do think having a RUclips channel as a hobby affords a certain laissez faire attitude. I'd hate to feel like I had to chase clicks and stick to a regular output schedule (although I'd like the clicks 😂).
This is a really interesting topic and I definitely relate to a lot of what you said! So frustrating when trying to pay attention to the metrics has zero effect 🤷 I stopped trying, honestly! And while I sometimes film in little to no makeup there are times when I don't feel comfortable doing so and either begrudgingly spend the time making myself look presentable or I film from behind the camera instead 😂 Anyway, I think being bad at RUclips is working for you so keep it up!
I suppose it is working haha! At the very least I am having fun and haven't stopped ~ we've all had setbacks, or get a little disenfranchised from time to time so this tag was fun to kind of look at all that. I'd say the upside of my wanting to be made up for 'the camera' to film means I have taken better care of my skin so I can wear less makeup and spend less time doing so!
i'm a bearded dude on youtube and I can attest no one wants to watch my book videos, I get more views on my music hahaha i assume its my personality and lack of style! . I love your videos and demeaner and enjoy your commentary. In all honestly I prefer your more laid back style, kinda hate over gushing try hards if that makes sense. 💀💀💀 Bonus, i use your Bookworm pillow almost everyday.
Those pillows are pretty cool, and thank you! We make what we want to see in the world; great music, writing, time to read these awesome books and our videos. I, for one, like any video you make!
I missed this video when it came out, but I came back after watching your latest on your dRead convetion haul. I really enjoy your videos. I know it's a very niche area, but don't change a thing. The books and topics you discuss are super interesting. I've bought several books based on your discussing them. You have a knack of finding and talking about very interesting, often obscure books that even I haven't heard of.
Thank you so much! I do aim to highlight books few people talk about and horror of course! If anything I am hitting the mark making a show I'd like to watch myself 🩶
Keep experimenting. It looks like fun. Personally I like people who don’t fit easily in a box. (Not sure whether that is the right expression). In school someone described me as weird and I felt proud of it.
Sometimes I do too :) and I'd say that is the right expression. Thank you for the kind words - most of the boxes people are supposed to fit into don't usually fit many people!
Grumpy Andrew directed me to this video (somehow I missed it). I think we're in the same demographic, Lydia. I love your channel, but I'm pretty sure I'm a bad Booktuber, so maybe I should do this tag too. 😍
Heck yes - I'd love to see your take on it. 99% of booktube is bad at youtube it seems and maybe that is our style? It is such a weird niche as nothing really matters but the books, right? But we have fun! I think people need to be a certain age to even understand the thumbnail photo here haha. Younger people don't have the 'lampshade on the head' guy anymore.
Yes I just learned about restricted mode the other day and I thought "surely my book channel doesn't have any restrictions." Huge unpleasant surprise to see about a third of my videos disappear. Some of it makes sense, but a lot of it I don't know why it's restricted. I can only image what it would be like if I only read and reviewed horror.
It makes me wonder if the true crime and creepypasta channels just 'disappear' in restricted mode. I'm sure we could appeal but it seems like a pain to do so - it certainly explains why some people miss a chunk of videos then suddenly find them if they are using RUclips at work or school!
I'm not sure how I found your channel (maybe because I'm also a true crime fan?) but I'm glad that I did. I've discovered several new authors. Plus I like your reviews, I think that you're assessing the work fairly and I can usually tell by your review how I will like the books. I would like to see more YA horror reviews though ;)
Thank you so much! This is so nice to hear ~ while I do read the occasional YA book, I do certainly hope to read more true crime so maybe there will be more of interest. Thank you again :)
Awesome video! Funnily enough, I am considering starting a second channel dedicated to sport. Might do well. 😂 I enjoy your channel because you are authentic, knowledgeable and amazing. You reached out to a small booktuber (me) when it really mattered. I don't do social media either and that is probably not good for my channel. I will definitely read your short stories before we chat! Stop worrying about makeup you are awesome. Anita is the same when we do videos together. Awesome that you are true to yourself.
Most women have a little bit of reliance/love for makeup, don't we? :) I've a feeling a sport related channel would go over so well! You approach your passions with care and knowledge that I have a feeling it would be as good as your show now but with twenty times more like-minded fans. Thank you so much for the kind words, Cliff!
