Helpful Video. To claim our tax back we used a company in Canada called RMS. They sorted all the paperwork out and did not have to send over my passport. They are authorised to do over zoom or Skype to prove identification. They charge I think 20% of the taxes owed as a fee. ITIN followed in the post with a cheque.

I won a $12,000 handpay at Venetian in October 2022, they would not do an ITIN, so I had to do the ITIN / tax reclaim in 2023. I used Breeve (or Just Breeve) it cost me £876 in fees, but really good service. I got paid by cheque within a couple of months, which was quick given the lack of IRS processing staff. I used a cheque cashing service in Las Vegas to keep the money in $ so I didn’t lose out on currency conversion back to £. You do have to pay the cheque cashing service a % and it is a bit of a hassle, but worth it if you don’t want to keep changing £ to $ for future trips. In the end I think it cost me 10% of the jackpot instead of losing 30% by not reclaiming the tax. I believe the ITIN is active for 3 years, so you need to keep winning handpays on a regular basis so as not to have to apply for another one! Good stuff. I'm waiting on the envelope through the letterbox with my ITIN after a fluky multiplier on a Royal Flush on 5c Video Poker at Mandalay Bay leading to an $1800 win. They did all the paperwork and paid out in full. It took nearly an hour but worth the wait to not lose several hundred in tax. Hopefully the proposals to raise the $1200 limit get approved and it cuts down on the paperwork all round.
Excellent work and especially good at explaining the issue of "winning first before applying". I believe that this tax treaty issue (and thus the ITIN) also applies to Canadians in the same way. I haven't been to Vegas in many years (45) and things have changed a lot since then such as the rise of the slot machine. In my time working at a international accounting firm I had the odd client who needed to file a US return to get their money back. I wasn't in the Income tax division but these issues always came to me LOL notorious gambler Ha Ha. Another reason to avoid uncooperative resorts.

Great video just one point. If you claim yourself you need to fill out the same 2 form (W-7 & 1040-NR) and send your passport or a copy made by a US embassy which will cost $50 for them to notify your passport. You also need to send your original 1042-S when claiming. I successfully claimed myself and my costs were $50 for the passport copy, train ticket to Edinburgh to attend the embassy and international postage to the IRS so around £90 in total. I also received 7% interest on my with tax!

Great to know. I knew you could do it directly much cheaper but was told I’d need to send my passport to the US which I didn’t want to do. I looked up the embassy route as I saw that on a forum but couldn’t get any exact data on it. Appreciate the info. When did you do it btw? Was it recently?

Won 2 handpays in luxor last year MGM sorted my application, paid no tax and received paperwork from US a couple of months after. Valid for 3 years

Great info, thank you. I got a hand-pay last August in the Bellagio, and as you say, I was given the whole amount and a 'piece of paper' - all good. But I've never received any communication providing me with an ITIN. Don't suppose you know if there's anywhere you can check whether you've got one? Cheers
I would look on the IRS website for an email address to see if you can request the ITIN number or paperwork. The good news is, you’ll be on the MGM system for future handpays in their resorts
@@BegasVaby Thanks very much - I've just been fighting my way through the IRS online portal. I think they assume the entire world is populated by US passport holders - they finally accepted my Brit passport, and my local council election card, but it all fell apart with my driving license, my bus pass and my Veteran's Card, lol. I won my first handpay in Vegas in March this year at the Cromwell and they paid me in full.

Great video, always love your vlogs, i won a handpay a few years ago at Cosmo and they sorted everything out for me however i havent been back to Vegas for 7 years and headed back in June, i received a copy of my ITIN through the post back when i won the handpay, does the ITIN expire or would that same number be ok to take with me again this year... in the hope that i win another 🙂.. I think it expires if you have not used it within 3 years unfortunately. It’s still worth taking though just in case. Someone else said Cosmo kept everything on file so if you hit it there again they might have it anyway

As a US Citizen this system is stupid. Caesars does like to withhold! I told the guy - I'm down thousands for the year so you are just giving me a homework assignment to get the money back... Just finished my taxes - had to pay to submit the online returns just to get my money back from out of state.. It's a stupid system and the US Federal Government should increase the hand pay threshold to $5K or more!! Thanks for sharing this info for our friends in the UK!
I won a jackpot at TI 2 years ago and didn’t have an ITIN then and they payed me out in full! The slot attendant was actually the one who told me that we didn’t have to pay the tax.so jackpot was payed out in full… few days later had a jackpot win at Mandalay Bay and they withheld the tax!
Ah how odd. I spoke to both Mandalay and TI and that’s the info I got in February. Obviously things have changed in a couple of years
@@BegasVaby I was there in February too,luckily again I got a jackpot in Luxor,paid out no problem,then got one in Excalibur,again paid out no problems… then got one in bellagio,and had problems! I had my itinerary,passport and I’m on their system and they still asked for my visa code they said if I didn’t show them it they weren’t gonna pay me in full! After a lot of arguing and an hour later they did! I think it really does depend sometimes on the mood of your slot attendant!🤣🤣🤣
I think my ITIN has expired as it’s been three years since I had a handpay. Do you know if I can still use that number or whether the whole process has to be started again. Very helpful video.
I would always try to use it and plead ignorance. I’ve had reports of people saying that it hasn’t been accepted and yet others saying it’s been 7 years and the casino still accepted it. Officially it’s meant to expire in 3 years if not used but It’s worth a try!

It will last as long as you keep using it. If you don't use it in a three year span, then it is meant to expire. However, I 've seen some people say that once the casino has a record of it, they'll allow you to use it for longer than that. You just need to keep getting handpays - its the only solution :)

If you haven’t used it within 3 years it expires. But if you use it, it renews

That’s odd. I spoke directly to the Venetian casino slot manager in February this year and they said they don’t tax and they do all the paperwork. Wonder if they’ve become certified since your win?.
They didn’t even ask for my address, I was fortunate to get another hand pay at Park MGM and they paid out in full and must have applied for ITIN number for me
