Hello shango. I am a 15 year old kid from Bulgaria and I've repaired a couple of our tube sets just from watching and learning from your videos..I just want to thank you and tell you to never stop with videos because they are very interesting and you can learn so much from them.
Or a diaper. I'm not a fan of either of them. But at least Trump looked "alive" and well prepared. (He would make a good used car salesman) Biden simply looked like he was a deer in the headlights most of the debate Almost like he had a blank stare most of the time.... I almost felt bad for him. Another 4 years of this?? Why couldn't we find anyone better? Because no one wants the damn job!
Who would want this job anymore. In relation to the stress level and the responsibilities it is underpaid. You can make more money and have less responsibilities in mid level management and have a better work life balance. It is a job for idealists, of which are not many left.
Our family’s first TV was a Hallicrafters console combination TV, radio, and record player. Beautiful solid oak cabinet. I remember the day it was delivered in early 1952. Six year old me thought it was amazing. I can even tell you the first show that appeared when it was turned on for the first time: Kukla, Fran and Ollie
HV fade is a known issue with these sets. Some guys swap out the HV supply with one from a VT71 or Admiral 19A11. My Halli tubes flared too and I added a CL-90.
If I lived near you, I would take all the TVs you were going to discard, here in Brazil they are very rare, if I could get in touch with you I would even pay shipping for one of them. As I'm 17 years old and trying to work with these old pieces of equipment, I try my best to bring each one to life and try to keep them working for a long time!
My first electronics project was a Hartley oscillator using a 6C4 tube. It allowed me to transmit (very short range) on the AM broadcast band. I wound the tuning coil on an oatmeal carton. Ran the HV right off the AC power with an unpolarized plug. Miracle I didn't electrocute myself.
Had the same situation a few weeks ago. I was very happy to obtain a 1953 Philips "Hondehok" ("Dog House") at a yard sale in Holland for cheap. The CRT looked really good at first, but on closer inspection it came out that one of the pins was heavily corroded and that produced a hairline crack in the glass. Bummer. Absolutely impossible to get a replacement CRT for an even remotely tolerable price. Maybe I will try to shoehorn a 12" CRT out of an 1980s surveillance monitor in the thing. Thanks for brightening up my Saturday with this great video Mr. Shango!
ive done that a couple of times...i even converted a tv from magnetic focus to electrostatic and used a 90º instead of 70º crt, because the original was broken and unobtainable...the electrical part is easy on BW sets, you just need a crt that mechanical fits......but try not to alter the tv too much , physicall or it will be no longer a historical piece
While type 6C4 has been used for the local oscillator in TV tuners, it is actually half a 12AU7 and used for similar applications. As a class C amplifier, plate dissipation is 5W with a 300V supply. The RF oscillator used to generate EHT in this set comes under that category. 150-300kHz is typical for these circuits. No raster on an electrostatic tube even though EHT is present draws attention to leaky deflection plate coupling capacitors since the beam is shifted right off the screen. Re the 6C4 heater flaring on power up, the series heater circuit is the likely cause of this, since the 6C4 draws 150mA and has been shunted with a 39 ohm resistor to use it in the 300mA branch of the heater string. Since the resistor does not have the same temperature coefficient as a tungsten filament, the filament receives excess voltage until all the heaters have warmed up.
I was 16 years and my father and I went to a dump. After rummaging around for some time, I found three old electrostatic TV's. One was a Motorola and the two both Hallicrafter. When I got home I took all three apart and made one using the good parts. The set needed some TLC, pots needed some contact cleaner and the push button switches as well. Some time later I had my own TV. Latter on I found an article in Science and Mechanics on how the convert a TV to an oscilloscope. Latter on I converted one of them to an oscilloscope.
As it started, I had my hopes up that this would be one of your EOL videos, but after all the work you did with it, I was relieved that it wasn't. Well done! The debate was disaster enough...
Thanks for watching it so I didn’t have to. That was a cool departure from the usual sets. I’ve watched a couple of Bob Anderson’s videos on reviving those. Very interesting sets indeed. Good luck on the new workshop!

Introduced in 1948, Hallicrafters' model 505 was a typical set of the time, with a number of miniature tubes and a 7-inch electrostatic (7JP4) deflection picture tube. Model 506 was similar to the 505 but had small wooden feet on the bottom and used the same CRT. You most likely have the 506 which is from 1948, not 1950, but it's better to be off by a couple of years than a factor of 10. 🙃 Hope you get to finish your TV storage shed by Xmas this year. 😇
i stay for the sarcasm, your commentary is the most honest, id also be interested in watching seeing you repair automotive electronics from your day job if you ever post it
good going Mr Shango! All these old CRTs remind me of 30 yrs ago when I came over to Edmonton, Canada for a short work spree, and my German expat landlord there had a company rebuilding them. (Silver-Glo) The whole backyard was chockablock full with crts of all sizes, some partly buried in the ground, they had been sat there for so long. Once in a while at night there would be a muffled pop when a careless animal of some kind stepped on the neck of a tube....Poof... Cool place that was 🙂
Thanks for posting this, I've been looking forward to this one in particular. Real shame about the CRT. 27:27 I'd have to add shielding if I had one of those sets in this house. That is spot on BBC Radio 4 at 198KHz!
First of all, I wish you luck on the new building, it should be a big upgrade. That set really fought you all the way to the end, but persistence prevailed. But I see one of the candidates EOL'ed
The structure your building reminds me of one of the unfinished buildings we used to have to store lumber because my daddy used to have a lumber business when I was little.
I'm impressed the HV supply survived the debate. I've had 3 of those sets (1 in each cabinet option, Wood, Metal, and Leatherette), and they all have the HV sag in 15 min from the crappy HV osc coil Halicrafters used...My most recent set wouldn't even make HV on the original coil so I stuck a Motorola VT-71 HV osc coil and an 8BQ5 in* and got such rock solid results I plan to do the same modification on my other Hallicrafters TVs when I have time. *you have to replace the 6C4 heater with a resistor and insert the 8BQ5 between ground and the IIRC 6X5 heater pin that would normally be grounded, but it's otherwise basically the VT-71 HV circuit grafted into the Hallicrafters HV cage).

Very educational and entertaining. Shango, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you end a video with “thanks for watching.” I agree the debate was difficult to watch.
Wow Shango066, this one was a real workout, with the CRT, leaky caps, and the previous repair attempts! I noticed with those high voltage coupling caps for the vertical defection plates, they used 2 caps in series. I have never seen this work without a resistive voltage divider to force the caps to equally share the applied voltage. With all the cost cutting going on in the circuit, I am surprised Hallicrafters used that expensive filter choke in the power supply. The 6C4 is a general purpose tube. When used as an RF class C power amp, the datasheet shows it is capable of a 5 watt output. Note that these CRTs only used a few microamps of plate current so, the 6C4 is not working that hard.
The 6C4 is a medium-mu triode similar to half a 12AU7. The maximum ratings state it has a plate disapation of 3.5 watts class A, 5 watts class C. It can be used as an AF preamplifier. It is sometimes used in TV tuners. Also it can be used as a class C RF power amplifier where it has an output of 5.5 watts with a plate voltage of 300 volts and current of 25 milliamps. This is probably how it has been applied to generate the high voltage likely running less power to extend life.
Hi Australian here. Not many people here like Biden the media seem to think he has lost it. And quite frankly what I have seen of the debate it certainly seems like the case. Anyway. Another fantastic video to brighten up my feed. Thank you.
I love this channel. I’ve watched you for years and have no electronic experience but love your videos. During the week, I maneuver a gasoline tanker around and spend hours watching your videos on my big screen on the weekends. Your skills amaze me. I’ve caught a conservative vibe from your videos. I can’t imagine having conservative values living in California. Tell me, is it challenging?
Been watching and enjoying this channel for years and this was the first time I made a correct call straight of the bat ! a brownish smear where the fresh Getter material should be, actually the first visual check I make and what a bummer to be right on this one. Did they make Telly Kits back in the day ? well that's the best way for me in the UK to watch the debates !....cheers.

The resurrection was great Shango, I didn't know Hallicrafters made a tv! My Hallicrafters S 20R stills pulls in good signals even with an old marine antenna here in South Australia. But your right, the debate was hard to watch. It's not good making fun of a deranged feeble old man, but the other fellow was spot on.
Another great video! Ive always wanted one of those Hallicrafters TVs as I collect Hallicrafters radios but after seeing this maybe I don't want one any more. Lol. Great job on it. Yes it was terrible to watch. Thanks for the effort and looking forward to seeing your shop progress. Thanks Ted
Someone might buy the glass portion of the bad CRT's if you can take the sockets off the end then list them on flea bay. They'd look really cool as art work. Great video! I'd like to have an old electrostatic set from that time period. You really know your stuff to get around that mess inside so quickly.
You know, both candidates were just kids when that set came off the assembly line. It seems ironic to me that a Soviet tube was put into a Cold War-era set.
1:04:45 - Well done completing the resurrection prior to the debate on 07/28/24. If I had to restore that set, I would of missed the next two elections and maybe more. I’m almost at eol but I still got some kick. Great videos. Take care.
That zenith speaker is similar, but not the same to the Royal 2000 that you wanted to mention. The Royal 2000 uses a 5x7 made by Oaktron, and has a rectangular housing over the magnet instead of just the cylindrical cap/shield.
I used to have a motorola set that size.. A Guy in LA found me a NOS tube for it for $79. That was 40 years ago. Neat set, sold it eventually to a collector I just couldn't say no to. $600 in 1983 wasn't chicken scratch! Yeah, the set was near MINT! I was 19 when I rebuilt it. Once Shango finishes the "Shed", Newsom will tax assess it and move in 10 migrants. On Shango's dime, of course. Yayyy California!! 😆
Great work on the repair as always. I also found it interesting how you did your building bottom frame/foundation. The debate, was a filler of CNN. Without Trump no one would have watched it. I recently had to do a repair job on the back part of my house. Well ones I opened up the floor I found that part of the house is basically setting right on the ground and in the dirt. I dug out enough dirt and carefully put two solid cement block under each cross beam after I double-sistered, or replace them. It is much better then it was, and it lasted as it was for me over 12 years since I moved here and the house is over 100 years old. It appears to me that part was a outside back porch at one time, then it got enclosed and then later a second story added to it. At least now the wood in not touching the ground and the first floor is greatly enhanced and very flat with it's own support system. I was 60 years old when I did that work last year.
Unfortunately, you have to say the same about the Republican party as well. At 78 and 80 years old, both should be retired, enjoying retirement on the beach. It's a pretty pitiful situation if you ask me. I got nothing out of the debate; one looked like a deer in the headlights half the time, and the other seemed to forget it was a debate spending the whole time not answering the questions and just making campaign jabs. Neither one gave me any idea about grand ideas or moving this country forward, is this is the best we have to offer or is it no one else wants the job..

Hallicrafaters was also (I believe) better known for their high quality radios, and even those had very detailed user manuals. I am not surprised at all to see the quality data you were able to find, judging by the radio manuals that came in the box.

Hey Shango! I'm a 68 yr. Old Canuk! I've been enjoying your vids. I went to college in 71 for a electronics technician. Zenith tvs, radios were great! When RCA went to solid state they had alot of problems and their engineers cut alot of of good components to save $$$! Did you have the same problems in the U.S., too??😅
Wow ! One old guy who can't talk vs. another old guy who can't tell the truth . By the way it was several years ago another guy on RUclips named "Buzz1151" restored one of those old Hallicrafter TV's , but I don't remember if he had any better luck then Shango did .
It won't work. Once you activate a cathode, and it comes in contact with air, it oxidizes to a different oxide (carbonate?), that can not be activated again.
6C4 a tuner tube? here in the UK its an EC90, basically half an ECC82/12AU7, wouldnt have thought that'd be much good at RF!? also, thought Hallicraffers mostly/only did communications receivers?! you dont find much of their stuff over here, but i did have an S20R i sold off sometime last year
an EC92/6AB4 would i'd have thought be a better one, same as half a 12AT7/ECC81, they were used for RF, i have a Grundig radio that uses an EC92 in its FM tuner
The number on the HP branded CRT is quite hard to read, but looks to be G200D, this is a 5AQP probably not made by HP, the D is for P11 phosphor, quite a rare option. Pinout is the same as the 7JP4, but the deflection voltages are much lower. Out of all the 1960s HP scopes I've repaired, only one had a bad CRT so far, it had also gone to air with the heater burnt open circuit.
Great video, you got through fixing a lot of little problems with the set! Just wonder what you did to stop the last intermittent focusing issue (where you could turn it off and back on to temporarily fix it).

Sweet.... an afternoon with Shango and a beer. 198 kHz is Driotwich England BBC Radio 4 500kW Don't you interfere with Cricket Test Match Special........
Droitwich 198KHz due for switch off in the middle of next year I think.
@@HughTVDX Yes and that is the UK fallback emergency transmitter, bloody BBC going to all pixies, stuff analogue. Plus my clock will not be correct and no cricket I am pissed. Why put all our trust in digital systems including the telephone which don't work. BBC has been taken over by Woke rainbows. Sorry Shango I will go now. .
@@HughTVDX Bad and irresponsible move since it is the only transmitter capable of broadcasting to the UK. Digital is not EMP or hack resistant.
As far as I know they're not transmitting TMS on LW anymore. Truly this is the age of the Yahoo.
Shango is speechless, this was practically an EOL video for Biden's presidential reelection. This video was perfect.
If you think Saudi Arabia dropping the petro dollar is bad, the BOJ just announced in the last couple weeks they are going to be selling their dollar bonds. The BOJ has been one of the most supportive institutions for the Dollar. The BOC has already been selling dollars.
We (our govt) did this to ourselves and it’s sad 😔
We didn’t even use it to do cool stuff to make things better while we had it. We pissed it away
Just get your Mark to buy/travel/sell and be happy owning nothing while you eat zee bugs.
The US is going to be dumping the dollar soon too. Others are just getting ready. Wait and see.
I promise you, that it was not me yelling at my monitor, about changing those old wax capacitors, Shango!
@kti5682I think that the European tube nomenclature was "invented" in Germany in the 1930s by Telefunken and Lorenz. But I may be wrong on that one.
Sleepy Joe needs a new oscillator tube. Filament to cathode short.
Gassy, low emissions.
@@brentwegher2014 DJT has plenty.
A complete overhaul.
That wasn't a debate. That was a homicide. 😂
I stayed with this video to the end, more than I can say for the debate.
1:04:45 - Well done completing the resurrection prior to the debate on 07/28/24. If I had to restore that set, I would of missed the next two elections and maybe more. I’m almost at eol but I still got some kick. Great videos. Take care.
wow, that’s awesome. You got that old-school TV going
also, I like the dry sense of humor the sponsorship haha lol
That zenith speaker is similar, but not the same to the Royal 2000 that you wanted to mention. The Royal 2000 uses a 5x7 made by Oaktron, and has a rectangular housing over the magnet instead of just the cylindrical cap/shield.
The TV is (now) in a better state than the two candidates. Shango066 for president? ;)
I liked the TV resurrection . hmmmm ,... gonna leave it there . Another shango066 master piece of elegant entertainment
Remember, Biden is the very best candidate the Democrats could come up with from their entire Party.
@@Bostedboltz Christ! TRUMP had the country running like a Swiss watch compared to senile Biden's intentional destruction. TRUMP seems to be the only one who has the balls to take on the traitorous democrats, their lawfare garbage, the deep state, the RINO's. The rest of the crowd, democrats and Republicans are only interested in enriching themselves and retaining power. This should be a NO BRAINER! TRUMP 2024!
Remember also Trump is the very best Republican they could find in the entire country. They looked high and low and came up with their very very best.
That says everything that we need to know, come November!
@@herbertsusmann986 Don't forget he only hires the very very best for his Cabinet of Criminals Grifters and Outright Criminals
Hello good afternoon Love TV Brazil 🤔✌️👊
Someone forgot to flip the dim bulb switch for Brandon.
Quite the opposite. His CRT bias was maxed out, but they could only get a dim and blurry image out of it.
@@UHF43 From what we saw someone probably forget to put the service switch back to normal. All left was a thin, dim, grey line instead of a full color picture
"Don't do this a home, kids!" - well, unless you exactly know what you're doing!
For me, all wax sealed paper caps are in for blanket replacement, no questions asked. If preserving originality is important, I'd gut them and put a modern film cap inside.
Hallicrafaters was also (I believe) better known for their high quality radios, and even those had very detailed user manuals. I am not surprised at all to see the quality data you were able to find, judging by the radio manuals that came in the box.
I have the same tv but in much better condition. I am now looking forward to fixing it. The 6c4 is an oscillator in the front end, not an rf tube.
I have subscribed to Dan about 4..5 years ago..I never skipped his videos..By the way.. I'm watching his videos on my 32 inches TV and sometimes in my bedroom on my Panasonic 56 inches TV ....
That 56" in your bedroom must make for great times with OnlyFans
TV resurrection followed by BIden EOL. Great video!
This man has a deal with the god of images...
I love that - seen that on old VC2 units when people would replace the blown 100mH inductors with 100k resistors. "Inductors OPPOSE the change in current - I can just resist the current going through right?" (Sure, in DC land)
Great video as always. And I sure think you let the debaters off the hook at the end of the video.
Dan
allways great videos look forward to the next
Send it to Ron, see if he can repull a vacuum on it
It won't work. Once you activate a cathode, and it comes in contact with air, it oxidizes to a different oxide (carbonate?), that can not be activated again.
Mr. Potato head bombed before the TV. YEA!
Cool, a tv that once recieved diaper commercials!
Whatcha think Joey? Pretty cool huh?
Ya think Shango'll get it goin?
What's that you say?
🤔...
Joe makes up words like Shango. Just not as cool as the TV radio and auto wizard.
I've seen women with a phone having a display that size in their back pocket 🤣
pretty sure this TV would outlive Biden easily
Not saying much.
Great video in many respects.
My favourite channel ❤
Another interesting and educational video!
A 6C4???? Jeez, at least Admiral used a hefty 6V6 for the hv gen.
If, in the future, somebody starts rebuilding CRTs, would that first CRT be rebuildable just by pumping out the air since the gun itself appears new?
Bout fell out of my chair laughing when Trump did the double take 🤣 Damn i pray we dont get another 4 yrs of biden , SMH !
TRUMP 2024 or the country is COOKED!
They are both totally unfit. One is a dangerous lunatic and disassociative convict and the other a senile dementia patient.
Great video, you got through fixing a lot of little problems with the set! Just wonder what you did to stop the last intermittent focusing issue (where you could turn it off and back on to temporarily fix it).
