  • Just a few days ago, Argentinian player Diego Schwartzman announced that his professional career is coming to an end next season. While it seems like an early announcement, it is something that could be anticipated considering his performances over the last year and his public declarations as well. Diego himself had already given hints about it, but now it is official. He is most likely retiring after the Argentina Open to be played in Buenos Aires next february. What a career he’s had though. Certainly a lot more than he could have ever expected, and definitely, a lot more than most people expected from him.

Same size as you, but much older. Back in the 70s we had short guys like Solomon, Dibbs, Mike Estep, Billy Martin, and Ken Rosewall. Wood rackets blunted the big guys power as well as slippery grass n slow red clay. The Michael Changs and Schwartzmans are largely extinct.

I’m almost exact;y the same height as Diego, maybe slightly taller. Holding and swinging a racquet always came natural to me but I was told to quit tennis at fifteen and did, knowing that my height would be an issue. I always cheered for Diego, he showed the whole world that it ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that matters. Would have to be one of the hardest working athletes on the planet to achieve what he did, an incredible career!

Seriously ? Do you have a source ? Because the only way I can see it as a possibility is because his serve's bounces are always low due to his height ? Especially compared to, say, Karlovic when all his rebounds are high.

He looks shorter than say, a few of the women listed as 5'7" . They even lie about the women. Ons Jabeur for example and Sakkari are listed as 5'6 and 5'8. I beg to differ. Emma R. is listed as 5'7' I tend to agree that she is close to that, the others I think are shorter. Inclduing Jessica Pegula. She seems about 5'4 or 5'5 not 5'7 as I've seen in some media.

Neverdiless, I keep on thinking that a friend of him that is a very strong player was not in the mood to defeat Diego in a just unique but very important match for Diego's carreer. But ok, he deserves it, Diego deserve the frienship of his friend and his friend didn't find the energy that day to defeat Diego. Ok. Is just a thinking. Perhaps it didn't ocurr.
Schwartzman for many years with great effort and courage made that the hight were not a reason for not achieving great results but on the 30's seems that finally the difference of height make a difference. He gave us all a lot. Hope he enjoy his last year. Why not a carrerer in doubles next?

Can you be a top tennis player being short? Actually yes, but you must start by accepting that you will not measure 1.90mt and adapting your game accordingly. Is Diego the exception confirming the rule? It depends, if the circuit moves towards hard courts, it is likely, but while clay tournaments resist there will be chances for not so tall players. Another reason to love clay courts.
