Jazz organist, trumpeter, and vocalist Joey DeFrancesco has and keeps evolving as a musicians musician. For well over 25 years Joey has played with or recorded with a bevy of great organists ranging from Charles Earland, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith, and Don Patterson. At 41 years young, he understands his role as a messenger of the past greats as well as moving the music forward by playing and incorporating all styles of contemporary music to the past, present, and future to jazz.
The Philadelphia native got his training early on by playing with the legendary "Philly" Joe Jones as well as his dad, 'Papa' John DeFrancesco. At 17 Joey played and toured with Miles Davis and ever since his career has sky-rocked out of that great 'young lions' generation of musicians that came out during the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Joey's latest HighNote Records release "One For Rudy" pays respect to the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, the recording engineer that was responsible for crafting the Blue Note, Prestige, Muse, and Verve recordings during the 1950's and is still actively working.
Recently Joey played a week at the famed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City with the City Rhythm Orchestra. The CRO hails from Joey's hometown of Philadelphia and has backed many vocalists and legendary musicians for decades. In this set Joey not only cooks on the Hammond B-3 but he also plays trumpet and sings.
