The only chance to get rid of Mitch is probably if he pisses off Trump some more, and Trump sets up a rival candidate - that could actually be fun...😈
Same thoughts here...the main reason why the democrats want the filibuster is exactly because the Republicans have turned the Senate into scorched earth. It can only get better by taking away some of their undeserved power.
Can you imagine any other politician in the world admitting their intent is to stop the work of government? And NOBODY calls him out on this. This is absurd.

What's really crazy is in Australia the government sends every 17 year old a Birthday Card that includes a voter registration form and pre paid envelope. You just fill it in and drop it in the mail and they send you a easy vote card with your local info in time for you turning 18. Then on election Day volunteers have online maps to help pick poll locations based on the quality of the sausage sizzle, cake stalls and coffee...because in Australia people spend more time celebrating with democracy sausages then queueing to vote
Haha! Good morning from Perth, Western Australia. Yes it’s true. I had to laugh when I saw the online list of primary (elementary) schools where you could vote and get snacks 😊. They each had emojis such as: ☕️🌭🍰. The P & Cs (like the PTA) run these, to make money for the schools. We bring our dog along for a sausage (no bun!) too😊🐕.

The latest stimulus bill is the perfect example. Republicans delayed it with incessant demands, some of which the Democrats gave in to, then when the vote happened not a single Republican voted for it anyway. Catering to McConnell's demands is pointless. Like the scorpion, he'll always sting you in the end because that's his nature.
@@blackvolt1000 yup. It's even richer when you consider Republicans have a harder time winning when people vote. Why are we talking about ending or modifying the filibuster? The Netherlands is a really good country. I spent a few weeks with my daughter, who’s husband worked at his company’s HQ for a year. She plays the viola and joined other local musicians. I had a Lovely time there it’s so beautiful and the people are friendly and direct.
Sadly we haven't purged the filth of a two party system from our politics. If only it was as open here. But if you aren't red or blue you don't get a vote more or less.
I just voted in the Netherlands 2 days ago. Took me half an hour: 14 minutes to walk to the voting location (one of 30 in my town), 2 minutes to vote, 14 minutes to walk home. TF is up, US?
It's not the whole of the United States, it's the Republican (red) states. The way it works is we're a federation of states governed by a central government. So any law the federal government (top government) doesn't decide is left up to individual states to decide. That's why we have a lot of stupid patchwork laws that differ in each state. Anyway, each state sends it's required federal monies in, as well as federal taxes from all Americans who file, and that gets portioned out to states that need federal aid money (also doled out for presidentially-declared natural disasters). That's right, the federal government takes from the many and distributes according to the needs of the people. Sounds like socialism to me, but you won't hear a peep about it from any Republican legislator or party member, because they are EXACTLY WHO RECEIVES THE AID. The blue states by and large pay way more into the federal government than they get back. California, if it was it's own country, would have the fifth highest GDP in the world (not sure what Mississippi ranks- ooh, burn!). They pay much more than they receive in federal dollars. A vast majority of red states, however (coincidentally many of the same states that voted against expanding Medicaid for their needy citizens, which is federal money so I dunno wtf their problem was) take in vastly more federal dollars than they contribute, meanwhile rallying against both increased taxes AND increased wages. And every day the infrastructure ages. Meanwhile, these GOP Idiots cling to shiny objects and the dead legend of "voodoo economics", hoping none of their base notice the party yacht is actively sinking. This is "American Individualism" in a nutshell: Progressive: "Hey, would you mind paying $7 more per paycheck to revitalize the downtown business district, getting all buildings up to code and providing grants to help businesses thrive, thereby creating more jobs and more tax dollars to provide funding for things like aid for the homeless, animal shelters, roads, parks, and public art?" In Australia we have compulsory voting. Everyone votes. We have a BBQ afterwards where you get a sausage in bread. It happens on a Saturday. People get time off work to go vote if they need it. The last time I voted I timed it and from getting to the voting place (which was 500m from my house) to walking out after voting took 2 minutes. Point is - America is insane.
Plus there are voting stations open for 2 weeks ahead and mail in voting and kids selling drinks, sausage sizzles. Most I ever waited for was half an hour and that was unusual... I did have a chat with our state rep at the time. Oh, and we have an independent Electoral Commission too. Seems if you make voting compulsory then the rest eventually falls into place.
I live in germany and have voted since I am 18 yo. My votes were the same each time. The state sends me a card that I am a voter. On election sunday, I eat breakfast and ride my bicycle to the local school, hand over my voting card get my ballot, mark my vote in a booth, put it in the ballot box and cycle home. Takes me 20min tops and I am done, each and every time the last 25 years.
Every state in the USA is different. It only takes me 5 minutes to vote in New York, right up the street. It's almost like having all the different rules from different countries in Europe. France is very different from Deutschland, right? but you can still get there on a train. Same thing going to Georgia from New York. We even have to pay tolls to travel between states, and the laws are different.
@captain obvious - Slight suggestion, your story confused me when you said that you "drive my bicycle." A better verb would be "ride my bike" or bike can be used as a verb, "I bike to my local school". Drive is a verb that is more commonly used with motor vehicles. So when I read your story it sounded like you loaded up your bike into a car, drove the car to a local school, did the voting thing, and then rode your bike home while leaving the car at the school. Intentionally taking up parking spaces outside of the school where voting is taking place seemed like real jerk thing to do. Then I realized you were probably riding only a bicycle and this was just a miscommunication. Hope the suggestion is received well.

The thing that kills me is their reason for criticizing the house voting bill. "It's a blatantly partisan bill mean to help keep them in power!" saying it as if they did not say the day before that they wanted these state bills to help them win.
I think the entire country should vote like we do in Colorado. It's assumed mail in, with LOTS of drop off boxes specific to votes with the option for in person voting
So, at a constant, publicly known time of year, thousands of voters in every state are expected to photocopy and send their identification in the mail? I cant see that ending bad for anyone.
In the "land of the free" some politicians are trying to make it illegal to give drinks to, and talk to people in a queue? And not just during a pandemic, mind. Bizarre.
And don't forget, "in a pandemic" those same 'politicians' strongly suggest/support/infer/and show, "don't wear facemasks", and "everything that tells the truth is fake newssss"!🙃
Almost exactly what I said. I went, "okay so he just admitted that if the gop don't get their way on this, they'll literally just refuse to be cooperative and will...just not do anything including helping Americans...well, at least he'll still be acting like the childish sadistic fucktwat he always has been"
just did my taxes in Canada and there was a checkbox at the end that was "do you want us to make sure you are on the voter registrar lists?" ... so there's that in comparison
I especially liked that the Republican lawyer had to admit that if they weren't allowed to limit voting rights, it put them at a "competitive disadvantage ".
Donald Trump says "The courts didn't have the courage to overturn an election..." but it's his dad that didn't have the courage to reject Donald after Don failed at businesses. And that is the _real_ sad part.
One thing that helps me think of it is that like, my dad voted for Trump, but he did so from a pretty clear position of ignorance. He worked more than full-time, which, when added to his commute, his hobbies, and his entertainment, meant he didn't really have time to watch the news. He was also VERY disconnected: he didn't use email, or his smart phone. He'd watch cable news sometimes, and glance at the local paper sometimes. And, as a middle class white dude working a government job with great benefits, he didn't really NEED to do more than that. So to him, Trump was kind of an asshole, but hey, he was a very successful businessman, so maybe it'd work out, and Clinton had been a part of the government for long enough. He was ignorant of the many ways Trump violated his personal values. And you can pretty easily imagine more extreme versions of this kind of paradigm: a parent working 60+ hours a week, trying to take care of their own aging parents, just simply 'going with the flow', because from their perspective, it doesn't really matter who wins, their life is probably going to be pretty much the same. On the other hand, my grandfather also voted for Trump, because, while being a fairly passionate man about the importance of education, he's also very ingrained with like, classic 50's mindsets, voted Ron Paul back in like, 2012 or whenever he last ran, and is a Fox News junkie. So there's multiple ways to BE blind: you can be someone who just doesn't get the news on how these people are hurting you and people like you, you can be someone who doesn't care/believe that it's really that bad, or you can be blinded by falling into a worldview that doesn't accept the premises of these people's abuses.

@Ryan Vigus What you seem to not realize is the rich are hoarding all of their wealth. They have the ability to pay everyone a fair wage, they just don't have the incentive to because no one is forcing them to. A person flipping burgers deserves to be able to afford an appartment at least so they don't need to mooch off of someone to survive. The argument against that is "Well they should get a better job!" How? To get a better job you need to go to a school either college or a vocational school. Those schools cost money, money people working minimum wage don't have. So they're stuck working those jobs or going into debt over multiple loans needed to pay for it. Maybe if they're lucky they might qualify for a grant, but odds are that grant won't be enough and they'll still need to get some loans. What if they aren't sure what field they want to get into? Well then they research all these different fields while working minimum wage trying to barely survive or go into college racking up lots of debt while they figure things out. Now granted I'm not versed in how much vocational schools cost, but I'm aware of how rigged the game is against those trying to get into a good college. If you're not rich or have rich parents your odds of getting a good paying job are very slim. People who do work jobs that pay more should also get a raise if the minimum wage does. It's only fair that those who took the time and had the flesh cleaved from their bodies by this broken system should get paid more. My point is don't get mad at the underpaid wage slave for wanting more get mad at the CEOs raking in billions on the pain and suffering of the lower classes. No one earns billions, you exploit others and find financial loopholes for billions. If a CEO decides to get rid of a worker for a machine to save money get angry. Grocery stores have self checkout lanes, but they still need someone to monitor them and help customers if there's a problem. It would be easy to set up a machine to flip a burger, but making the sandwich could have multiple problems arise if there is only the person to fix the machine then customers would need to wait for the damn machine to be fixed which could take a couple minutes to hours and that's lost profits you could easily have humans and a machine so in the event of catastrophic failure customers still get food or maybe have an automated ordering system and human employees if a person wants a more human experience or just doesn't trust the machine it's less workers and everyone wins. The people who want to order with the fancy machine, the people who prefer talking to people, the employees and even the CEO. There's no reason to outright replace humans for a single machine aside from factory work which has no interaction with customers. Some people enjoy talking to others, weird concept I know.
@Ryan Vigus are you wealthy? Unless you are, arguing against a living wage for blue collar jobs is fucking stupid. Maybe it would take a Kyle Hill video about superheroes to change your mind 🙄
As a student you should study economics then you would understand what a disaster a $15 minimum wage would be. Inflation will quickly absorb all that extra money leaving minimum wage earners at $15 an hour exactly back where they work when comparing their income to their spending power in the market. 10's of thousands of minimum wage jobs will just dispensary as employees are unable to get $15 an hour of value out of those employees. Thousands of small businesses across the country will shut down for the same reason. They literally wont be able to pay their employees $15 and hour and stay in business. Anyone who was making over minimum wage will effectively receive a pay cut equal to the increase in minimum wage. People who were previously making $14 an hour which gave them 2x the spending power of minimum wage will quickly find themselves effectively making 1/2 as much as inflation surges to absorb that money. Even those making much more than minimum wage will feel the sting as a person making $21 an hour who had 3x the minimum wage spending power is now making only 1/3 more than minimum wage. Employees who had much deserve and imminent raises coming will now see those put on hold for at least a couple years as companies struggle to pay over 2x as much to their less productive employees and are forced to neglect raises for those who through merit have earned higher pay. There will be many more consequences to jumping the minimum wage like that, none of which help even the poorest for more than the very very short term and in the longer term hurt not only those it is supposedly designed to help but also pretty much everyone else who actually works for a living. The only legitimate way to help minimum wage earners is through education. They have to learn the skills to be worth more AND learn the skills of negotiating to not only understand how much they are worth but to get that out of their employer. If your current employee will never pay you what you are worth regardless of your skill then its time to put in 30 applications a week until you find one that will. I wouldn't expect anyone who works for minimum wage to understand this but since slavery was abolished 150 years ago NOBODY has worked for a wage they were not willing to accept. Years ago I too took a minimum wage job for $6 an hour. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I was putting myself through school with 25 hours a week of classes and I needed the money. They were the first place that offered me a job. I put in about 300 applications over the new few weeks and finally found a job paying over 2x as much. Actually I found jobs paying over 50k a years which would take me full time starting immediately but I wanted to stay in school and get my degree so I turned them down. The point is you can't put in 300 applications (and have the skills) and not get some really nice job offers. I was able to find multiple jobs which paid enough but after cherry picking through them I found one that I liked, which paid me enough to stay in school, gave me on the job training for the field I was studying, and was able to work around my school schedule. Guess where I didn't put in applications? At places that paid minimum wage. If those are the only job offers you are getting then thats what you are doing wrong. Aim higher, and learn the skills to be worth of the positions you are applying for.

We’re no longer really a democracy, that’s what.
logoslive, its only difficult in areas where democratic voters are, and its legal!

This is the most important monologue of the year. Thank you!
The fact that so many Americans believe people like McConnell are fighting for them is incredible. How blinded do you need to be?
They have a R after their name. To some, that's all that matters

As a student, the $15 minimum wage was going to affect my life the most. I am heartbroken
@David Renton not quite. I think it’s $22. hr, but still
I'm not in a well-paid industry.☹️ I'm probably going to go finish a degree, rack up a horrible amount of debt at midlife so I can have a sit-down job. Body never has handled labor well.
