It has been 6 years since i discovered this video, i watch it times to times but the more i watch the more i like it. I've never played an instrument in my life but because of this video, i'm sure to play one some day.
Man i have to say you groove, i celebrate the way your soundscape plays to my ear. All phrase to traditions who are the keepers and vessels of the groove, though for those who whine of not being traditional are merely stuck in a box with wax clogging their ears.....long live the groove, well done!
Nice solo man! Great mixture of different techniques and tones! The best part about your solo is that you are into it and feeling it... which is the only way to play music!
THIS is absolutely beautiful. You are showing us all the many voices that can come from one drum. Never stop being creative. ALWAYS keep finding new ways. ALWAYS.
Thanks SO much!! I've seen many people play on this exact type of Djembe and I could never find out what it was called, you have inspired me to get a Djembe and learn how to play. I can only hope to be as good as you one day.
You inspire me to continue my djimbe journey. .. Beautiful work. Many may not of understood your sliding technique. .. but I loved it.. I was JUST speaking to another much better drummer than myself (whose been mentoring me) and told him how I wish I could incorporate sliding ....guess now I can xD Bravo my Djimbe brother... your earned yourself a sub!
I enjoy artists who are willing to be themselves, and often I then find that they are "self-taught." They didn't go to a school to learn to create their art just like everyone else, or to write a best-selling book because it fits the mold of what is currently selling well. Thank you for being unique, and for sharing your own interpretation of how this drum speaks to you. I hope you will keep having those conversations with this drum and letting the rest of us eavesdrop.
I'm a singaporean abroad, just picking up the djembe and imagine my surprise to find a fellow singaporean playing so well on youtube! Great beats there, but I have to agree with some others that the intro was too "contemporary" for my taste.
Hey, I work better with smaller drums because they tend to have less uncontrollable overtones. However they might be tricky for larger hands. I'm glad you're fired up to explore the djembe. Keep working!
4kk views and top comments 30 + likes.. cmoooon.... u made people speachless xD . this is most groove djembe plays i heard. just /applaud , its rly awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!
Very tasty solos tb studios. I appreciate you mentioning personal adaptation and not proclaiming to be Djembe master - like a lot of 'drummers' will do on youtube, after feeling the djembe spirit, but, not having taken the time to train. Remo makes a hybrid of combination of drums - Djembes due to their popularity is definitely represented. Djembes are west-african instruments with animal skin (with various tonality - lead Djembes, bass djembes), usually 2 - 2.5 feet tall; played in combination wtih bass drums called Dunduns when playing traditionally. Djembes are constructed with metal rings and strong-rope (4mm climbing rope - traditionally using slivers of skin). Remos use metal mechnism to to tune which is not traditional - but functional for hobby drummers in drum circles. Remo shells are also fiber-glass. Different from African Hard woods that come from the area - Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast. Bongos are afro-cuban drums, lot shorter, two drums that always come together - I know a lot less about it. Do google image search or wikipedia would be a good starting resource. If interested to buy djembe and related equipment go to www.goatskins.com (for affordable shells) and www.drumskulldrums.com (once you know enough to go pro - professional prices too but, very nice). For enjoyment feel free to watch as much youtube videos and play along with your favorite tunes. However, if you want to start learning African Rhythms, you have to find a Djembe playing community (very popular and available in most metro areas). Best is finding an African teacher, but, a good group (very subjective) is a very good substitute. A good place to start would be watching Mamady Keita's video (available on DVD) called "Djembefola". This is a documentary, but, will give you a good foundation to start (includes some lessons as well). turboch.studios - Those were some nice rolls in there if your solo. Do you play kit? Congas?
I cant believe that there is 589 dipshits in the world that would give this a thumbs down.....This kid has a plethora of talent and gets 10 for ten in creativity and uniqueness. VERY INSPIRING VERY AWESOME
+alby Application. I watch an hours worth of percussion videos every lunch hour and have for over a year. I've been playing percussion insturments for 23 years and selling them for 8, and I've never seen anyone play quite like this. Obviously he didnt invent any techniques in this video, but his application, patience, and aproach in my opinion make him a VERY CREATIVE musician. my 2 cents
Plethora of talent? 23 years and this is what you think talent is? These Remos can make so many sounds and he just does a lame beat and calls it a solo....
I just fell in love with this instrument in the past 10 minutes appreciate the highs and lows. Took me forever to figure out what it's called. What brand is this particular instrument you're playing? I am trying to buy the cheapest high quality one possible for beginning. Thank you.
Go for a remo they are decent quality have a easy tuning system for beginners and are a little lighter as they are synthesized not hard wood they are a bit metallic tones but a 14in remo is a great instrument for a beginner
Great playing! I bought a Remo djembe a few years back. Great drum but I still prefer an authentic Djembe honestly. Remo totally has an artificial feel/sound which I suppose is to be expected. Also it doesn’t sound like in this video. This is due to the fact that he’s playing in a recording studio with a mic. Just my two cents for anybody shopping around. Happy drumming :)
I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that but I truly do like what you have created I will make sure to read the description instead of assuming or guessing to understand what I'm watching before I comment. once again I am truly sorry.
Thanks for replying. You have some nice tones with your 10". I looked at the 12" and the sound is phenoninal......remo mondo that is........i am going to get a remo earth. I got a great deal last week and had to buy bongos...... I got LP Aspires ---- 50.00 brand new! They go for 100. I lucked out. Cannot wait to start lessons. Took it to the shop to have them show me how to tune them..... I showed them what I practiced from youtube the past week they could not beleive how good I was!
There's a reason those traditional people are mad at this guy. They lack the talent . so don't get mad be happy for this guy . he's bad to the bone . thanks for the video and keep rocking that drum !
+Mike Oxner If he didn't acted so much during his playing (or if I was blind) maybe I would've appreciated more what he did. It sounds nice but it's way too acted and, to be honest, his hand technique is far from perfect. It's not about talent. It's that you know when someone plays his or hel soul through the drum, and he isn't doing that. He's trying to be impressive.
+Mike Oxner Exactly. We tend to acquire certain facial gestures and such, maybe look serious. It's unintentional. This guy is crearly trying to visually impress those who see him play. That's what I don't like. I also like what I hear, his playing is good (leaving aside his technique). I'm talking about his pose, which is -to me- not quite the same as "can't control looking spastic while I play".
Just got my djembe and that's the kind if out of the box stuff that's wicked and the other African drumming is of its own I think it's cool to be different
Extraordinary rythmic and inventive handwork, inflicting some guttural and bodyclash moves as well. I highly approved of his energetic as well as enigmatic way of creating drum conceptions out of the ordinary. Keep on drumming and growling your own way, that's the only way to develop into a deeper understanding of the inner spirit of music!!!
Lol I just watched it for the first time in forever, so hilarious. I just ordered a Cajon from Amazon, it's the Meinl Percussion Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon, I can't wait for it to come in.
Well done for not being "authentic". It's nice to hear the variation you can get on a single skin. The previous poster should learn to speak with some respect before trying to be critical, it helps!
Thanks Simon. Indeed I was looking to explore into augmented techniques for this remake of a traditional goblet drum. Technically speaking the Remo fibreglass djembes aren't authentic even. With new materials come new sounds.

Such an emotion and sense of rhythm is something worth of everyone's respect.
It's amazing hearing some of the sounds I've heard on previous djembe recordings and connecting them to the hand motions that create them.
Very cool grooves man! It's neat seeing how you can make so many sounds with just one instrument.
Beautiful, natural, pure percussion - he is amazingly talented.

everybody has their own voice in music, much respect bro. very nice.
It’s more than drumming or even music. He has a language all his own, yet it speaks to all of us.
Nice solo man! Great mixture of different techniques and tones! The best part about your solo is that you are into it and feeling it...
which is the only way to play music!
That totally expands my scope of percussion knowledge quite a lot
Wow, really great! So soft and dynamic, and many flavours! Great Work!

This is so creative and groovy that I keep coming back to it.
Much respect! You're an amazing musician and have inspired me to pick up a djembe of my own!
Cory Burrill. So how's the drumming coming? ;)
I keep coming back to this vid, the whole piece is just super tight.
THIS is absolutely beautiful. You are showing us all the many voices that can come from one drum. Never stop being creative. ALWAYS keep finding new ways. ALWAYS.
commenting just to get your attention.

Pure genius! Intro reminded me of the sound fx in Mushishi, then BAM! Into the hip hop groove👍
Very inspiring man!
I liked how creative you were with the sounds themselves and the groovy rythm. Keep it up! =)
Beau-ti-ful….! All these sounds and intricate rhythms…! Absolutely love this 💛
Wow, 1M views. Thanks!
Great work. Any advice for a beginner?
Work on the fundamental tones? Browse my videos. All the best.
Which firm this microphone??
Sure (sm58?)
Its a 9 inch djembe?
At the beginning it reminded me of a gentle beach tide rolling in and out.
A nice build up to a warm, enveloping rhythm. Cool.
Im sold on getting a djembe now holy shit man. Mad entertaining
Stunning rhythms there, mate! Very inspirational! Thank you!

Shawn brings a kind of 'sexy zen' to his percussive art. I love that.
This is sheer talent thats it he is unbelievable, am amzed by the sounds he pullled out of this thing djembe, my god, am highly impressed........
So much emotion! This is an expression and its beautiful to see.
das ist wunderbar.. Seine Seele ist mit Rythm
This is wonderful, so much colour, and a human vocal quality to the sounds.
Thanks Jon, means a lot coming from you. I visited your channel, love your work on the guitar.

So psychedelic... Thanks man
You are truly talented 😉
Well done for not being "authentic". It's nice to hear the variation you can get on a single skin. The previous poster should learn to speak with some respect before trying to be critical, it helps!
Thanks Simon. Indeed I was looking to explore into augmented techniques for this remake of a traditional goblet drum. Technically speaking the Remo fibreglass djembes aren't authentic even. With new materials come new sounds.
