Bullying is not good, but facing it can teach you Resilience
Wow, at last a content creator who doesn't just parrot the same boring establishment narrative. So glad I found your channel! Regarding the subject of the video, as a young Millennial, I feel like within my lifetime we've gone from a "developing a sense of agency" approach to bullying and demeaning treatment, to basically fetishizing being a victim. It's ironically 'empowering' to claim victimhood and to have an excuse for why everything wrong with your life is someone else's fault - the most bogus form of this is on a societal level with the asinine but deeply harmful idea of collective guilt. What is the answer?!
ha i remember seeing that 'daniel is the real bully' video years ago and was like omg this is legit, and i was totally on board with it. still am.
i'm gen-x and i never really dealt with bullying. oh there were attempts but thing is, i always gave as good as i got - usually better. maybe because i'm the youngest of 3 so i learned pretty early on how to give a cutting comeback. but that was how we dealt with stuff back then (most of us anyway - of course there were the more timid kids who never really stuck up for themselves). i mean, we were the 'your momma' generation lol, we knew how to spar verbally if nothing else.
there's a lot more i could say but it would just come off as really mean and unsympathetic. in short, kids today are soft.
There is little that can sabotage one’s life worse than thinking your circumstances are mostly outside of your control. Certain groups of ppl have been horribly crippled by the notion that the world is systematically against them and that their failures have nothing to do with personal choice so they should not be blamed for any negatives
This video is very enlightening and you have very valid statements. I agree with much of what you discuss here and the sad truth is Gen-Z's just don't have a wider view because what they have been taught in school is all they know.

There’s an old saying: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This is absolutely true, and should be recited to every other generation. Growing up, I was bullied- oh, man, was I bullied. I got it from every angle; I was short for my age, I had a non-standard first and last name, I even got picked on because my father was a professional and we were better off than others at my school (weren’t the rich kids always portrayed as the bullies in every movie?). It absolutely hurt and confused me, but I learned to rise above it and not take it from anyone, to the point of actually physically challenging and defeating my bullies one at a time one year. To this day I despise those that bully to my core, but I understand life isn’t perfect and bullies do what they do because they are the broken ones. I also know taking the rough road built CHARACTER and RESOLVE inside of me, and made me who I am today, and I wouldn’t change a thing. A person gains nothing being weak and being coddled, there’s no growth or challenges to overcome.

I was the opposite. I was 5 11 in 5th grade and 230 pounds. And for some reason(?) I was picked on for being fat even though I was the size of a grown man.i punched a kid in the mouth and knocked out 2 teeth. That only made bulies want to fight more. But by high school it all changed.
@@jacobpowell2318 : Wow, that is a very different experience. Maybe they continued to be aggressive because you were a big target, who can tell what weird child psychology was happening. It’s interesting, as I defeated my bullies, they either left me alone of became friends and ended backing me up. I remember the year after this happened my parents took me out to a different school, and the former bullied who became my friends were actually upset I was leaving. For you, what changed in high school? Did you go from being bullied to being a wheel, did the bullies accept you then?

x The following generations (after Gen X) are more susceptible to attacks because they have not generated as much value throughout their life and are insecure about it.
o Gen X created such a massive amount of traditions and pop culture because of how much we were in the public sphere, our ability to collaborate effectively, our level of activity, and our productiveness.
† For example, a lot of Gen X'ers that I knew hung out in abandoned buildings BECAUSE IT WAS FUN, something the following generations aren't likely to ever do for many different reasons (it would scare them, they don't like "old" things, they would pretend that they don't get why others hang out in those situations, they might not like getting dirty, etc).
Yup, there was always that one abandoned house in the neighborhood (that was maybe haunted)!! There was an old Victorian mansion that was a day camp in the early 1970s that was defunct by the early 1980s. Everyone would trespass and explore it (we were crazy!!) until they tore it down to build a condo in 1985. An abandoned corporate office park was nirvana!!!

A strong presentation...
The hovering & coddling premise which you mentioned promenently in this presentation is quite true and evident within society today.
Furthermore, this style of parenting is also very prominent within circles and thought processes in a large percentage of parents of people who happened to experience "disability" within their day-to-day lives.
This negative mindset which some of these parents utilize within their parenting can be quite hampering and detrimental to the person's ability to learn their own way in life and they're own social circles. Not allowing opportunities or allowing for the ability to fail can and often does stunt a person's growth and developmental awareness.
Thereby making these parents "always needed" which is what they consciously or subconsciously really want to be anyway... Therein lies the vicious cycle.
Also, Natalie - I understand that you are (or at least your commentary and you seem to be) a person who is politically conservative. Which is all well and good. However, would you ever consider producing a presentation discussing the shortfalls of the conservative and or Republican politique both socially and in its political conceptions?
I taught English overseas at an elementary school in Turkey in the mid 2000s. I once asked the director of the English program why Turkish kids were so spoiled, and he said Turkish Generation X spoiled them. "The '80s were really hard for my generation growing up in Turkey- unstable government, falling currency, several military coups, and a closed economy that banned imports likes vcrs, bicycles, skateboards (unless you were rich)." He never had a bicycle or skateboard as a child or teen, so now many adults his age (30s to 50s) spoil their children absolutely rotten, giving them everything! "Its how we deal with our PTSD from the 1980s!

the greatest thing about gen x is not even crying about being bullied. learn to fight back and settle things that way. no cancelling and wokeness back then.
This past year I watched A Christmas Story Christmas (3rd installment that most have not heard of) and the topic of bullying resurfaces when adult Ralphie has a run in with Scott Farkus and where his children as well have to deal with their own bullies of the current generation. I will not spoil it here and only say that it tackles the issue in an odd manner imho. I realize it’s supposed to be a heartwarming holiday movie (and it certainly is-much better than the 2nd movie). I’ll just say that it only highlights an issue that will probly never go away and future generations will continue to learn as they go and make their own choices defining themselves and providing novel examples of problem solving.
I feel like you are victim blaming and have a warped view on bullying. Some of us were not just verbally bullied but physically assaulted then gas lit and victim blamed by adults. No it did not help me be more resilient. It added to my anxiety and lowered self worth. And I hate to tell you studied show that single parent households vs trad fam structures shows no difference in affect, self esteem, or lacking in social cohesion. This is real life not Leave it to Beaver and you have such a backwards mentality that it’s deeply upsetting. I’m the same age and also grew up in a very small town. But everything from our generation was not perfect. There has been no perfect time. Bullying is a nuanced and situational thing. It isn’t something that should be ignored. I’m only glad that my experiences being bullied helped me sympathize and help advocate for my kids who were bullied. But it is why I pulled them from public school. No one should just put up or accept verbally abusive people as normal. I really liked your videos up to this one. But your very obvious right wing propeganda has turned me off. The younger generation could teach you something called empathy and open mindedness.

This wasn’t pro bullying, it was against the anti-bullying grift that has taken over our schools and made our kids weak. You can be mad all you want, I don’t advocate for violence or treating people awful. And I am absolutely not victim blaming, which I talk about in this video.

Wow, the current anti-bullying approach sounds an awful lot like teaching kids to believe in voodoo curses - someone can put a 'spell' on you with their words that leads to harm. WTF? I literally can't think of a worst, more self-destructive thing to teach kids. Let's teach kids to turn their imaginations in on themselves. What's next, telling kids there really is a monster in the closet?

As an Xennial who was bullied in the 80s I sure would have preferred not to be. Sure I guess I grew up fine and I certainly fought back but they also made my life a living hell and seriously interfered with my education. I’ve never bought into the “don’t coddle your kids with anti-bullying” approach. Has it helped any generation before it? Look where we are now. All it does is create adults who create bullies. Heck we elect bullies as President. Maybe trying to stop bullies is not a bad thing.
The one thing I am so thankful for is that I didn’t have the internet when I was young. At least when I was out of school I could avoid it. Modern bullying does real damage because it haunts the victims everywhere in their lives.
Bullying sucks and should be dealt with…but not by calling every act, word, or thought that someone doesn’t like “bullying”. I too am thankful that we grew up without the internet. It’s made the situation so much worse.

@@mysocalledgenxlife That’s fair enough. I definitely think that people should learn to disagree and realize people will have different opinions but I also think we know bullying when we see it. I think you can draw a direct line between the ‘Daniel was the real villain of Karate Kid’ videos to the 4chan-ification of the internet leading to Andrew Tate types and even MAGAism. You make some very good points (and I am enjoying your videos) but there is a fine line between developing a thick skin and empowering bullies.
@@plagueoftruthvideo I can definitely agree with that. This one of the very first videos I ever made, and it may have come across to some as bully empowerment. That was definitely not my intention. It taught me that I need to be more clear and succinct in my writing, while including nuance in my ideas and the points I’m trying to make.

I have taught high school for 27 years....I have seem EVERYTHING. Bullies have their place. The fear of being made fun of....MAKES YOU ACT appropriately!!!
By all means.....VIOLENT bullying is unacceptable but the other...lights that fire inside to be better. Bullies can point out what we need to work on TO BE BETTER. I have seen the rise and fall of bullies endlessly and also the fall and rise of the bullied.

I wil say this, bullying is just one aspect. Kids now donot have obstacles to overcome to make them stronger. They are coddled and catered to. Im from the tail end of gen x and eas coddled more than the rest, but i stil had real obstacles to overcome. Adversity is the fire which putifies man.
Absolutely. And that’s why I did a section on parenting and on bullying. When parents take away challenges and obstacles so their kids don’t feel pain or discomfort, it is ruining their ability to develop proper coping skills and the ability to overcome.
