A great engineer who walked away from being the CEO of GM to fulfill his dream and try to do something different. Many people call him a failure, but he was not. He built the car and his financial backers (UK Banks) pulled out after forcing him to build his factory in a cow pasture for political optics. IMO, he paved the way for Elon Musk by taking all the blows that life threw at him. A great man will guts.
One bit of his legacy endured. Tesla's first Auto plant used the same 'floating line' used in Northern Ireland - where robotic carriers took the chassis from one workstation to the next. The advantage is it could be reconfigured on the fly.

My all original, unrestored DeLorean STILL runs and looks great to this day. Quite the testament to their design. That being said, they did have some issues that were addresses with dealership recalls, but once you got them, you were good to go.
Not just the US, around the world. Corruption is rife in all of them and the thugs that pass as federal police have gotten too powerful with anti terrorism laws allowing them to do almost anything they please for no reason.

I had a friend that worked for the DeLorean Quality Assurance department, so he helped me make numerous modifications as he was aware of the problems that it had. I sold it in 2004 because I had purchased a 2000 Acura NSX. I am still in contact with the person that purchased it from me. I considered my DeLorean to be the best one in existence with all of the updates that I did to it. I would recommend that a modern-day owner be proficient at repairs and servicing. The feel that the motor can easily last a few hundred thousand miles if it's properly maintained. Hope this helps. J

Cavet tried so hard So hard to make DeLorean look so bad but DeLorean etiquette and very well spoken attitude never waivers and I appreciate his answer to "why he converted and is living Christian life" now (paraphrased) made DeLorean look SO much more eloquent than cavet ever will be in this interview! I watched DeLorean movie "Driven" which showed his side and was a really good movie too 👏 👌 👍
Cavett gave him a very easy time considering very few people believe DeLorean's side of the story. He didn't attempt to make him look bad, he pointed out the facts and echoed the scepticism felt by the vast majority of viewers. Cavett's style is always slightly facetious, no matter who the guest is.
7 minutes in ... I have to say this is the weirdest interview I have ever seen with Dick Cavett .... and he looks kind of weird here also his eyebrows or eye makeup or whatever , doesn't look right ? I think this is more than just skepticism here on his part it's just seems that Cavett really does have contempt for DeLorean .

He is nerdy and socially awkward --- repeatedly, over and over again. And often rude to his guests. He's a weird dude. Someone I would have benignly treated as though I thought he was normal and like everyone else if I had known him in high school or college.

IMO, John DeLorean was the Enzo Ferrari of the American auto industry. John was GM's top design engineer with 44 automotive patents to his name and was slated to one day become CEO of the company. But DeLorean wanted GM to become more innovative by investing in the type of cars he wanted to build but all GM wanted to do was build these little candy-ass 4-cylinders to compete against Japanese imports. DeLorean didn't want to spend his entire career building such cars so he resigned from a position that was paying him $600,000 a year to found his own company. That company may have failed but how many of us would have the stones to risk a secure high-paying position to follow our dreams? And those cars were built to last. Of the 9000 DeLoreans made, 6500 were still on the road 25 years later. Not a bad record.

...the factory was in Dunmurry, Ireland. Them's some good eyes you got there. I think you meant the processing centers where they were IMPORTED to and cleaned before being loaded on trucks and shipped to the dealers. They sat in those staging lots, baking in the sun, for a LONG, LONG time. My DeLorean still has the "tape marks of royalty" on the front and rear bumpers where the tape that held the Styrofoam protection slowly melted into the paint from having sat in the UV radiation from the Sun too long while waiting to be shipped. That's how you can tell if you have an unrestored, all original DeLorean vs a rebuilt or restored one --> the tape marks in the paint on the bumpers.
John was so well spoken, so elegant in the way he presented himself, such a shame he fell so hard. He should have walked from the company or slowed down his production to not over extend himself. Sad story.

Throughout the entire interview Dick Cavett tries to get the better of DeLorean, John's not let that happen. It's almost like Cavett seemed annoyed when he introduced him, if you listen carefully he mumbled something as John is coming in and later during the interview John called him out on it
i didnt like how Dick Cavett had made his mind up about Delorean's guilt even thou he won in court and the Jury agreed that he was set up by the FBI and did nothing wrong or with wrong intent. Cavett keeps prodding him in a way that is disrespectful and I wonder if Cavett was put into a situation like Delorean was put into if he could come out of it with the same grace.
My college history teacher told me it was the North Sea the the molds were thrown in. In any event this is the first footage l come across that even touched on that fact.
Having watched the video he says Galway which indeed is the Atlantic Ocean, but it also doesn't add up as that is in the Republic of Ireland , Johns factory was in Belfast ( Northern Ireland - offically the UK) and at that time things were very fraught between both areas with heavy borders, if it was dumped in Galway bay it wouldn't have been by the Brits directly, they very well could have paid someone else though, they are snakes

The major problem Ashok was that the car was too expensive and in the middle of a major recession in the early 80s, few people were willing to buy a car that cost around $25,000. That meant high costs with no cash flow.

I don't remember the Dick Cavett show past the 70s - was this a cable thing? And where in the world was this filmed (in LA obviously - but where)? Everyone has an opinion on the man and the car - but he DID bring jobs to a country that was ripping itself apart - and for a brief spell succeeded in providing for those same people (regardless of their religion). And I think that alone is a win. Not a big win perhaps, but more than most might experience in their lives - that affected and helped many other lives. And that's a good thing.
If anyone needs the backstory, go watch Driven (2018). Yeah, it's embellished, but It's good. P.S. In the movie, Lee Pace's fake chin is more realistic than the real John DeLorean's.
Big 3 and UAW loved the smearing the three letter agencies and their buddies in the TV networks did to him. He was a threat and they needed to make an example of him. Absolute legend and he bowed to no man.
Delorean was no threat to the Big 3, after all people that make whimsical purchases for boutique cars have plenty of resources to do so. With one exception for Delorean,GM had let Delorean know; the supply of Harrison HVAC boxes somewhere around 7,500 units would end. Delorean would have had to find new HVAC component supplier. Remember, country was coming out of Jimmy Carter economics in Reagan and Corvette sales were on the slump long before DMC12 arrived to the party. Delorean posed know threat to Chevy, Chevy folks were just looking for an excuse of continued slumping C3 sales.
I recommend the recent movie about him and his downfall. He was obviously very good at his jobs in big corporations. When they asked him to come to GM he was only 30 or thereabouts. They gave him the pick of any job he wanted, and a high salary. And he went from strength to strength. Good for him for having a dream. It's only a shame that things ended as they did.

You can tell by my name I am a fan of John DeLorean. I am also a fan of Dick Cavett, but I thought he had pre-judged DeLorean in this interview and was unfairly aggressive, and that DeLorean maintained his good humour and poise throughout
OK, let me stop him right here. At (15:36) he says he's never been arrested for anything, prior to this, in his entire life. Which is patently not true. He was arrested in college for running a "Yellow Pages" advertising scam, where he had people give him money for advertising that they thought was going to be printed in the Yellow Pages. He was caught, arrested, (he might have been fined) but was ultimately let go.
Cavett is-was a Beta individual and she was showing his feminine side.. Cavett never designed ground breaking car models,, he never broke out on his own, and he never built anything from scratch. He showed his feminine,envious side here, and DeLorean showed utmost composure.
I've never seen Cavett display this level of hostility toward a guest (other than an asshole like Lester Maddox). Of course, I've only seen like less than 10 interviews of his, but he clearly doesn't like this guy and isn't shy about making it known, in his own polite way. I think he was actually nicer to Maddox, probably because he wasn't trying to paint himself as a nice guy/victim.

The reason anyone gives a stainless-steel crap about the DeLorean isn't because of how it drove, or how fast it went. It did neither very well. No, it was because of those beautifully angular time machine looks. But whatever happened to the dies used to stamp those sleek panels of the iconic gull-wing? Were they - as is the oft-repeated rumor - destroyed by the British government to keep anyone from re-creating the company? No. It turns out they're being used to anchor nets for the Bradan Mara Fish Farm in Ard's Bay up in Northern Ireland. Here's the real story. 30 years ago, when DeLorean died as a company - for cocaine trafficking, cruel conspiracy, mismanagement or whatever you want to believe - the automaker was forced into receivership. As part of the process, its assets were sold off. Those assets included the moulds and dies used to build the exterior panels of the car. But of course, no matter how sophisticated and cool the final product may have looked, few car companies seemed eager to get their hands on the technology behind stamping out obscenely heavy stainless steel body panels. So the stamping dies went to a scrap metal company - and then, as the folks at DMC News tell us: "the dies were purchased from Belfast... by a scrap metal company in Cork, Ireland." From there they were sold to a rather unlikely final owner - the high-tech salmon farming industry. It seems that only in their hands could they be used to maximum potential - holding salmon school nets to the bottom of the ocean floor. As Captain O'Donnell of the Severn Princess (Non sequitur: The Princess was primarily used as a car ferry and ran through the terminal that Bob Dylan is standing in front of in the promo shot for the Martin Scorsese film "No Direction Home." -Ed.), the ship that dropped the dies, said: I don't think the fish farm ever prospered, and there is no news of it today. And that's where all those beautiful moulds are, under the sea and quite lost for ever. What a waste. That company was, at the time, a subsidiary of the Irish tobacco manufacturer Carrolls. But chin up and look on the bright side. Salmon's a really tasty fish, and has never been saddled with an anemic V6 engine. (Thanks to DMCNews for the help!)
So...as a kid I grew up in Northern Ireland, where DeLorean had his car plant. They rolled one of his cars up to our school and we were wheeled out to have a look. I was allowed to get into the car, and they closed the winged door. I was eight. I tried to open the door and couldn't work it out, I had a panic attack, claustrophobic kid. A teacher tried to open the door from the outside but couldn't. I was in tears bawling for my mum. They eventually got the thing open. Fucking nightmare. Thanks John D! And no one goes to mass 'every single morning other life'. Not even priests.

Too bad the dmc scandal was his legacy to a lot of ppl. I was born in '74. Til recently, all my family hasd ever driven was Pontiacs. He got frustrated w/GM I have a copy of "on a clear day......". Still need to read it. Always wondered what direction GM would have taken if he had been Pres for years, wasn't he VP? What he did with Pontiac in the 1960s is nothing short of amazing. Not everyone's a gearhead, but for those who are......its not just the GTO. Bunkie Knudsen hired him when Packard went belly up. The '95-ish History channel hour on Pontiac, Knudsen said "John was the best engineer I've ever known." He was brilliant in many ways. The early years of the Grand Prix are pointed to as great example of Pontiac styling the whole decade, they had everyone beat on styling, and had as much power as anything else. There was a year they won 49 of 53 NASCAR races. He wanted a 2 seater like the Corvette, the Banshee. GM said make an F-body version of the camaro. They made the better looking, faster, firebird. He insisted they build a high-performance, high revving Overhead cam 6 cylinder. No one else but Pontiac, did that til decades later; the Sprint version of the OHC-6 had a 4 bbl., high compression, could be had with a 4 speed,etc. They would rev 6500+ rpm. Nothing else back then, '66-'69 , did that. I've seen guys say, it has the performance of a small v8, while getting 24 mph. With all the brands available from GM, Ford motor Co., Chysler, AMC & all the others, there were several years in the '60s (maybe 70s too?) Pontiac was 3rd in sales of all automobile manufacturers. 3rd ! A lot of that was because of the years he was worked at Pontiac. I believe I've heard the 1969 grand prix was influenced by him a lot before he was moved to Chevy. The Grand Prix in 69 was a huge departure from the prior years, it was a hit. Could be wrong, but I believe the 68s & earlier were based on the full size cars. Pontiac made the 69 based on a stretched version of the A-body platform. He didn't just run the division, like a stuffy office bean-counter From what I've read in the past, he got elbow deep in stuff like this. The new design was such a hit, GM told the other divisions to do the same. The man should be remembered for his work at Pontiac in the 1960s, among other things at GM (he said he knew the Wankel rotary was a mistake, & Ed Cole wasted $2 billion). If you judge him for his successes, & not the DMC-12 or the fbi thing, he should be remembered as one of the all-around greatest automotive minds of all time.

Throughout the entire interview Dick Cavett tries to get the better of DeLorean, John's not let that happen. It's almost like Cavett seemed annoyed when he introduced him, if you listen carefully he mumbled something as John is coming in and later during the interview John called him out on it

i didnt like how Dick Cavett had made his mind up about Delorean's guilt even thou he won in court and the Jury agreed that he was set up by the FBI and did nothing wrong or with wrong intent. Cavett keeps prodding him in a way that is disrespectful and I wonder if Cavett was put into a situation like Delorean was put into if he could come out of it with the same grace.

Didn't know the UK Govt took the engineering moulds from N Ireland worth $18m in 1982 and threw them into Eire's Galway Bay. Shocking.
My college history teacher told me it was the North Sea the the molds were thrown in. In any event this is the first footage l come across that even touched on that fact.

Having watched the video he says Galway which indeed is the Atlantic Ocean, but it also doesn't add up as that is in the Republic of Ireland , Johns factory was in Belfast ( Northern Ireland - offically the UK) and at that time things were very fraught between both areas with heavy borders, if it was dumped in Galway bay it wouldn't have been by the Brits directly, they very well could have paid someone else though, they are snakes

I don't remember the Dick Cavett show past the 70s - was this a cable thing? And where in the world was this filmed (in LA obviously - but where)? Everyone has an opinion on the man and the car - but he DID bring jobs to a country that was ripping itself apart - and for a brief spell succeeded in providing for those same people (regardless of their religion). And I think that alone is a win. Not a big win perhaps, but more than most might experience in their lives - that affected and helped many other lives. And that's a good thing.
If anyone needs the backstory, go watch Driven (2018). Yeah, it's embellished, but It's good.
P.S. In the movie, Lee Pace's fake chin is more realistic than the real John DeLorean's.

Big 3 and UAW loved the smearing the three letter agencies and their buddies in the TV networks did to him. He was a threat and they needed to make an example of him. Absolute legend and he bowed to no man.
Delorean was no threat to the Big 3, after all people that make whimsical purchases for boutique cars have plenty of resources to do so. With one exception for Delorean,GM had let Delorean know; the supply of Harrison HVAC boxes somewhere around 7,500 units would end. Delorean would have had to find new HVAC component supplier. Remember, country was coming out of Jimmy Carter economics in Reagan and Corvette sales were on the slump long before DMC12 arrived to the party. Delorean posed know threat to Chevy, Chevy folks were just looking for an excuse of continued slumping C3 sales.
He said the best that came out of it was getting a relationship with Christ , then it's all worth it .... God is life .....

I recommend the recent movie about him and his downfall. He was obviously very good at his jobs in big corporations. When they asked him to come to GM he was only 30 or thereabouts. They gave him the pick of any job he wanted, and a high salary. And he went from strength to strength. Good for him for having a dream. It's only a shame that things ended as they did.

OK, let me stop him right here. At (15:36) he says he's never been arrested for anything, prior to this, in his entire life. Which is patently not true. He was arrested in college for running a "Yellow Pages" advertising scam, where he had people give him money for advertising that they thought was going to be printed in the Yellow Pages. He was caught, arrested, (he might have been fined) but was ultimately let go.
Cavett is-was a Beta individual and she was showing his feminine side.. Cavett never designed ground breaking car models,, he never broke out on his own, and he never built anything from scratch. He showed his feminine,envious side here, and DeLorean showed utmost composure.
And he never accused Johnny Carson of smuggling drugs.
I've never seen Cavett display this level of hostility toward a guest (other than an asshole like Lester Maddox). Of course, I've only seen like less than 10 interviews of his, but he clearly doesn't like this guy and isn't shy about making it known, in his own polite way. I think he was actually nicer to Maddox, probably because he wasn't trying to paint himself as a nice guy/victim.
DeLorean showed absolute class in this interview. Calm and collected answers, I would like to know what a body language analyst thinks of this

The reason anyone gives a stainless-steel crap about the DeLorean isn't because of how it drove, or how fast it went. It did neither very well. No, it was because of those beautifully angular time machine looks.
But whatever happened to the dies used to stamp those sleek panels of the iconic gull-wing? Were they - as is the oft-repeated rumor - destroyed by the British government to keep anyone from re-creating the company? No. It turns out they're being used to anchor nets for the Bradan Mara Fish Farm in Ard's Bay up in Northern Ireland. Here's the real story.
30 years ago, when DeLorean died as a company - for cocaine trafficking, cruel conspiracy, mismanagement or whatever you want to believe - the automaker was forced into receivership. As part of the process, its assets were sold off.
Those assets included the moulds and dies used to build the exterior panels of the car. But of course, no matter how sophisticated and cool the final product may have looked, few car companies seemed eager to get their hands on the technology behind stamping out obscenely heavy stainless steel body panels.
So the stamping dies went to a scrap metal company - and then, as the folks at DMC News tell us:
"the dies were purchased from Belfast... by a scrap metal company in Cork, Ireland."
From there they were sold to a rather unlikely final owner - the high-tech salmon farming industry. It seems that only in their hands could they be used to maximum potential - holding salmon school nets to the bottom of the ocean floor.
As Captain O'Donnell of the Severn Princess (Non sequitur: The Princess was primarily used as a car ferry and ran through the terminal that Bob Dylan is standing in front of in the promo shot for the Martin Scorsese film "No Direction Home." -Ed.), the ship that dropped the dies, said:
I don't think the fish farm ever prospered, and there is no news of it today. And that's where all those beautiful moulds are, under the sea and quite lost for ever. What a waste.
That company was, at the time, a subsidiary of the Irish tobacco manufacturer Carrolls. But chin up and look on the bright side. Salmon's a really tasty fish, and has never been saddled with an anemic V6 engine.

So...as a kid I grew up in Northern Ireland, where DeLorean had his car plant. They rolled one of his cars up to our school and we were wheeled out to have a look. I was allowed to get into the car, and they closed the winged door. I was eight. I tried to open the door and couldn't work it out, I had a panic attack, claustrophobic kid. A teacher tried to open the door from the outside but couldn't. I was in tears bawling for my mum. They eventually got the thing open. Fucking nightmare. Thanks John D! And no one goes to mass 'every single morning other life'. Not even priests.

Too bad the dmc scandal was his legacy to a lot of ppl. I was born in '74. Til recently, all my family hasd ever driven was Pontiacs. He got frustrated w/GM I have a copy of "on a clear day......". Still need to read it. Always wondered what direction GM would have taken if he had been Pres for years, wasn't he VP? What he did with Pontiac in the 1960s is nothing short of amazing. Not everyone's a gearhead, but for those who are......its not just the GTO. Bunkie Knudsen hired him when Packard went belly up. The '95-ish History channel hour on Pontiac, Knudsen said "John was the best engineer I've ever known." He was brilliant in many ways. The early years of the Grand Prix are pointed to as great example of Pontiac styling the whole decade, they had everyone beat on styling, and had as much power as anything else. There was a year they won 49 of 53 NASCAR races. He wanted a 2 seater like the Corvette, the Banshee. GM said make an F-body version of the camaro. They made the better looking, faster, firebird. He insisted they build a high-performance, high revving Overhead cam 6 cylinder. No one else but Pontiac, did that til decades later; the Sprint version of the OHC-6 had a 4 bbl., high compression, could be had with a 4 speed,etc. They would rev 6500+ rpm. Nothing else back then, '66-'69 , did that. I've seen guys say, it has the performance of a small v8, while getting 24 mph. With all the brands available from GM, Ford motor Co., Chysler, AMC & all the others, there were several years in the '60s (maybe 70s too?) Pontiac was 3rd in sales of all automobile manufacturers. 3rd ! A lot of that was because of the years he was worked at Pontiac. I believe I've heard the 1969 grand prix was influenced by him a lot before he was moved to Chevy. The Grand Prix in 69 was a huge departure from the prior years, it was a hit. Could be wrong, but I believe the 68s & earlier were based on the full size cars. Pontiac made the 69 based on a stretched version of the A-body platform. He didn't just run the division, like a stuffy office bean-counter From what I've read in the past, he got elbow deep in stuff like this. The new design was such a hit, GM told the other divisions to do the same. The man should be remembered for his work at Pontiac in the 1960s, among other things at GM (he said he knew the Wankel rotary was a mistake, & Ed Cole wasted $2 billion). If you judge him for his successes, & not the DMC-12 or the fbi thing, he should be remembered as one of the all-around greatest automotive minds of all time.
