    S2 is a criminally unwatched masterpiece. AOTY last year for many that watched it in a truly packed year of anime. The Blu-ray sales were almost definitely affected by the mobile game codes, but there's a very good chance it does end up being the number 1 in Blu-ray sales even without them. The show was that good.

    Correction.
    Teio and McQueen already see each other as rivals way before they joined Team Spica. There are lot of such scenes in S1 such as
    >In Episode 5, Teio doesn't like the idea of recruiting her rival (McQueen) into Spica but she was coerced by Goldship to do so
    >In Episode 12, McQueen said she also wants to be up there with Spe and Broye, to which Teio replied "Of course you will. After me"

    Season 1 is more testing the waters if the concept would even work. As internally there was conflict on how much horseracing vs idol anime it should be. Season 2 is the product of them realizing that going all in on the racing aspect would work.
    Also Teio winning in season 2 i felt was BS that i looked it up and was shookd. Season 1 hits harder if you read up on what actually happened.
    Then there's currently airing OVA...

    The key is Uma Musume is getting attention beyond anime otaku, and horse racing involves more money than anime. Uma Musume beats EVA volume 10, and EVA was like the pinnacle of hype within the anime otaku. It is safe to say that Uma Musume is a social phenomenon.

    An example of how Umamusume S2 changed IRL JP horseracing: Arima Kinen which Teio won is a race whose participants are chosen by votings, and the vote record was kept by the legendary Oguri Cap(protagonist of Cinderella Grey manga) for >30 yrs until 2021 after Umamusume S2, and the new record almost doubled the old one……the trend of aging of JP horseracing fanbase is completely turned over by Umamusume, millions of young people(like me) begin to watch IRL horseracing because of that

    After seeing the comments of this video I noticed some things and would like to offer a suggestion:
    So, I love Pretty Derby, both seasons. S2 to me was a masterpiece and I dared to call it the Perfect anime when I finished it 7 months ago, and I still stand by that. However, if I didn’t watch S1 I wouldn’t have even gotten in the fandom in the first place, and S1 deserves a reasonably large amount of recognition too. It may have flaws and may not compare to S2, but there isn’t denying it was still very impressive and fun to watch.
    Meanwhile, I see that a lot of commenters weren’t happy about the video. I think it’s mostly due to the fact that many of us were expecting a video on why the show was popular because of THE STORY QUALITY, not because of marketing. Just a suggestion, no big deal- If your goal of the video is to talk about why Uma Musume is successful, perhaps simply put the whole best-selling series statistic on the sidelines, not make it a main focus of the video. Personally, it helps me focus on what I should really talk about and the main purpose of the video.
    Other than that, love seeing more people talk about this show, should be a mainstream anime among the greats ngl.

    I love uma musume lol like the first season wasn't great but season 2 was amazing! Sometimes after watching super serious and depressing shit, u want a happy anime. Uma is that. Its just about horse girls wanting to run. Thats it. They have rivals, but they're healthy rivalries turned friendships. Its just nice.

    16:19 There could be another factor which is Season 1 had gone through alot of quality changes over its production. If you look at the first trailer when Uma Musume was first revealed (ruclips.net/video/HYrVKLBhitE/видео.html), you can clearly see how unpolished and different the trailer is to S1. Everything from the animation to how the character looks , even their signature outfits haven't been shown with them only wearing the outfit that Special Week wore during her first ever race in S1. This means that a part of its 2 year production is designing the characters and the world of the anime, which I would imagine would have taken a massive part of the production given how distinct and unique each character in this anime is. Compared to S2 where they already have most of the designs already done and can focus more on the story and animation. This would explain the massive quality bump from S1 to S2, even though their production time is the same at 2 years.

      Holy canoli that's a really different art style. It almost looks like a pilot promo for the show. It's different for sure, but I'm lowkey curious on what an entire two seasons in that style would look like. This was a great find. Thanks for linking it!

    While I agree with the conclusion that season 2 is better than 1, there’s a lot of historical revisionism to try sell the idea that season 2 is a completely different work compared to the first one. Season 2 obviously emphasises the sporting theme more, but all the elements that make up s2 were present in s1 - the humour is the same, the world building is the same. Any changes in quality can probably just be attributed to the staff being more experienced, rather than pretending it was some transformative change in approach.

  • @tragedyofwind

    well, you missed that S2 has the best Live performances, while S1 has no live performance at all! and the animation and graphics quality are the best in Live, so the idol element also got a boost, but they did it in a screen time of 10 min in the whole season, and got to say, it did a better live performance than other idol show. and S2 is easily the best sport theme anime at least within 10 years. because the storyline follows real life race, so all the interaction, injury and effect are very real compared to other sport anime. and the ending is just heart-warming, because seeing them recover and be able to run again is the greatest wish that all horse racing fans would like to see, and they realise in anime, it complete real life, this is why it is so well received in Japan. This is more than just entertainment when they decide to do this. This is about selling a dream to ppl. this anime has real world impact, given that retired horse association get huge community donation amount since S2. easily AOTY in Japan.

    Honestly, I liked S1 better. The focus on the main cast and more of a variety with the comedy/slice of life/sports appealed to me more. S2 is certainly better in some aspects. But I feel like by it essentially being a soft reboot of S1. It's not really a S2. It's more like a different perspective of S1. The chemistry between Tokai and McQueen is alright but not quite for me. So that kinda automatically brings the season down for me. Some of the side characters were amazing and I'd much rather watch them than the main two.
    Like Special Week's races felt like they were getting more exciting each time. There's even that one famous horse girl she races against from Europe towards the end of the season. That's cool. That's big.
    Tokai and McQueen's races were much more local and less of a grand scale in comparison. Which if that's what works for certain people because it's a more realistic take. That's great. I'm just not able to get invested in the same way.

      s1 race is around 80% following historical fact while s2 race is 100% following historical fact, also arima kinen is a japan race but it is still the biggest race in japan because all participant selected from fan vote, because of that only the strongest of that era selected to run at arima kinen
      also teio real life battling with overseas horse at japan cup and win, they just skip that part entirely

    What the heck is this video? First of all, I don't agree that the first season was worse than the second season, but you spend the entire time talking about how great the very "OK" second season was and COMPLETELY ignore the fact that it is the number one mobile game in Japan and had game codes in the physical media. This is ridiculous and a huge oversight. It has almost nothing to do with the quality of the show.

  • @user-df1gs1kf8w
    @user-df1gs1kf8w 2 года назад +1

    I refuse to believe this was the best selling tv anime. Perhaps "best" game anime, which sells ONLY in Japan. But even that's debatable. It has mediocre animation at best, a seemingly niche audience target, and not to mention in a typically unpopular anime genre that is sports (if you can even call it that). And MyAnimeList pretty much confirms all my suspicions. This is an anime that is not popular or even rated well, only 7.3/10, from roughly 40K raters. If you like this anime that's fine, I have nothing against it. But I am not okay with what definitely seems to be a click-baiting title cuz I value my time (and obviously I didn't watch the 19 minutes lol). I felt to write this here cuz of the questionable comments I saw scrolling below. Heck, perhaps I missed it but the vid didn't even mentioned the sales' figures. Goes to show, especially in today's time, that the "best" anime out there isn't the 'supposed' most popular or one anime new networks or platforms push in front of you. Or the opposite, not every anime Twitter tries to cancel is bad *cough cough Mushoku Tensei*. And so, I advise to find more credible anime sites or anime rating sites like MyAnimeList or heck IMDb that you can search through yourself.

    • @emberreviews1364

      I literally cited official sales records at the top of the video.
      Also based on the MAL score you cited you clearly only looked at season 1, which this video wasn't even about.

    • @user-df1gs1kf8w
      @user-df1gs1kf8w 2 года назад

      @@emberreviews1364 Top of video? I suppose you mean beginning of the video. You didn’t cite anything in the video or the description, clearly no links or sites mentioned aside from the self-promotion of "Ember Reviewers". Not a single link (not even one to your own site), and that scrolling screenshot of supposed figures is not a citation fyi. And I MENTIONED season 1 because season 2 is more based with only 12K raters meaning that roughly a quarter of the people who watched season 1 actually gave a damn to rate season 2. Hence the skewed 8/10 rating for the second season, which is arguably less than mediocre given its low associated data points. If anything, neglecting season 1 just goes to show that even you don’t give a damn either, you just want clicks on this video.
      Again, if you like the show that’s fine, nothing to do with me on that personal opinion. However, don’t pivot or sugar coat the truth of the matter; this is (by most) a mediocre (at best) anime that stand-alone is not, and more so, especially non-deserving of its supposed "best" selling tv anime title as the video click baited it out to be. These figures were clearly manipulated by what seems to be, as some others commented, their game sales through add-on codes. And even then, that’s questionable.
      Anyway, I suggest not replying again for the sake of both our time, I’m sure you (and I) have better things to do than go off in a YT comment section on freaking Uma Musume: Pretty Derby.
