　　In late 1924, a 2-year-old child in Nome became ill and was diagnosed with tonsillitis, a usually non-life-threatening disease, but this child was the exception to the rule, as many other children were diagnosed with tonsillitis, several of whom died, and the doctors eventually identified the disease as diphtheria. At that time there was a vaccine that could be used against diphtheria, then all the vaccines in Nome were out of date, the new vaccines did not arrive before the port was closed, the Baltic Sea would not thaw until the following June, and there were no roads through Nome, no airplanes, and the only way of transporting goods was by postal route, which in winter was only accessible by sled dogs. The Health Department decided to use two teams of sled dogs to relay the shipment; 20 sledders and 150 sled dogs had to travel day and night, over rivers, across plains, through forests, and across the frozen Alaskan mail route. The nearest vaccine site was Nanna, 1,085 kilometers from Nome, and while a dog sled would normally take 25 days to complete, it took only five and a half days to complete the relay and save the lives of several children.
　　Togo, one of the lead dogs used by Norwegian sledding expert Leonhard Seppala (Willem Dafoe), is praised for his resourcefulness, leadership and intuition, and is tasked with transporting the most dangerous part of the relay, from Nome to Nurato, to receive the immunization serum, and completes the mission in minus 30 degrees Celsius, with winds of more than seven degrees Celsius. The mission was accomplished. Togo was later awarded a gold medal by Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen.
