  • Mistakes were made, but we've finally (mainly) completed the main bedroom. Lots of plastering and painting, but it's good to have our own space. Now if we could finish the Japanese garden it would be perfect...

Im actually a huge fan of the wooden boards used to give the exposed beam look. Really adds to that wall. Looking at that and imagining an empty wall there doesn't really do the space justice in my opinion! Love the house keep up the great work mate, hopefully you get the upstairs office area done before the blistering Japanese Summer comes around, I'm hoping that the temperatures keep that room usable year round. Thanks for the video :)

Thanks mate, yeah want to work on upstairs ASAP. Using the bedroom as an office at the moment. Decided that we probably will insulate the roof so adds to the cost/time of the project.

I have toured numerous structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I sure can see that he truly did take a lot of inspiration from the Japanese and his time spent their designing the great imperial hotel. The guest bedroom at Taliesin, his home in Wisconsin, definitely has the ceilings and structural supports Reminiscent of Japanese Architecture. In his words “Organic architecture”.

I could hear your wife's eyes rolling when you made that "red light district" lighting mode comment. Too funny!
Nice update on your home's progress and those faux beams were a stroke of genius. They just give that otherwise normal wall 'life' and make it structurally interesting.

That bedroom ended up looking really good! I like the blue color you choose for the shikkui - we used almost exactly the same color downstairs in our place too! AND the exposed wood posts&beams as well. Although your new place is a lot more traditional than ours, we ended up with a lot of the same aesthetic. Come down to visit sometime and I’ll give you a tour! (And maybe we can finally get around to that collaboration video. Or just beer? 🍻)

The seam-hiding beams look just fine and the lighting turned out great. It seems that drywall seams are an issue for everyone everywhere. Question - how is noise in the house? I've fully insulated floors and ceilings and my boys + my 20lb cat still sound like a herd of buffalo when running through the house. Also, (totally unrelated) how is your wifi signal? Do you need lots of repeaters or separate wifi points?

lol "Frosty Dawn" sounds like the name of that old grumpy woman you always get at the end of your road.... Also small note on the floor standing lamp, you should use some small scrap wood you have to make a wood made and then use the internal and out bit from the original. love the video funny, informative, and inspiring.. loving all the colours you can get in plaster, I was fearing I would need to paint over white walls to get the same effect so good information. lastly might be work explaining to people the Japanese light socket system in the future videos I find it very cool how its modular all clicks into a bayonet style socket, but you can have a wide range of fittings without wiring them in each time. keep up the great work

Ingenious solution hiding the seams. A few more remodels and you’ll be a master at plastering. Really, just apply a total of 3 coats with progressively larger blades, and always follow up with a couple of coats of primer, and you’ll be a pro. Those hue lights are ridiculously expensive, but the app is nice.

I know this video is older now but I do want to point out how much I love the little casual goofs you sneak in at the end of the videos. Swapping out your phone for War & Peace 😂

I have had terrible luck at mudding and plastering so I think your work and problem-solving has had very good results. Well done.

Thanks, I'm terrible at mudding. It 's much harder than it looks!

Room looks great, only thing that spoils it is the wire running down the wall from the light above the chair. Running the exposed beams certainly adds character and is in context with the theme. Great vid and thouroughly interesting!

A wonderful choice to place timber over the seams of the wall boards. Nice work, well done.

Free hand plastering on the corners ! Wow that's some ridgy didgy shokunin skills being exhibited there 🤣🤣 That blue colour looks great and along with the red in the rug - Go Dees😉. The "exposed beams" to hide the seems worked out great too. This video had everything, even Tolstoy and red light districts. 👍👍

That earthy yellow looks so nice! I love the cheap-ish LED light set up, it's cool what you can do even on a budget. Looks like a wonderful bedroom to relax in!

I love it, it looks great. Great idea using the wood trim to hide the seams in the wall. Really adds to the room.

Great work on the room, sometimes mistakes lead to wonderful out comes. The lights are terrific they really add depth and personality.
