    Realistic vs unrealistic scenario shouldn't matter. Accidents happen. Point and case, my friend ran out of a corner a week ago and took friendly fire from an LMG that was firing across of the corner. Point blank in the face from 3ft. He just walked in front of it by accident. You can't replace your eyes, you can't control accidents, you can't control what other people do and what BBs other people use. Don't be a fool, use ANSI rated full seal eyepro.

      lowalkoroc Can vouch, was shot in face. LMG gunner hadn’t heard the “friendly coming in” calls like we thought he had and ripped a burst right as I turned the corner. A couple BBs bounced off my full seal eye protection, and another 3 or 4 chewed up my face just below it. I shudder to think what might have been if I’d skimped on eye protection, and I don’t think I’ll play without some kind of face (or at the least, teeth) protection again.

      E House - Gun Gamers similar situation here, was playing a field game when I first started , friend Mia Ali rated his hopup and shot me in the teeth with his 500 FPS sniper. 6 inches higher and it would have gone under my safety glasses and hit my eye. Went out and bought a full mask the next day.

Thats a MUCH larger projectile moving at similar speeds (285 is legal limit here in my part of the states) and i've taken god only knows how many hits directly to the lenses of my mask. Well, when you are hiding and peaking out, what is the only thing that the enemy can see? Your head! They will shoot it. I'd say 1 BB out of 10 that hit me is in the face. Good eye and face protection is more important than your gun. Also, goggles that don't fog is also a thing to look for, foggy goggles can ruin a day.

    Cheaper/crappier bb's can shatter even in lower speeds. You start to think about your eye pro choice after you spit bb peaces when kid opened full auto to your lower face mesh. I have eyeglasses so i'm bit safer, but still i would not recommend mesh for eye protection, lower face sure and even there braided mesh every time!
    For those who have eye glasses ESS land ops fit least with my glasses, are tested up to 180m/s and those are pretty old model so those are bit cheaper today. Do fog a bit, but removing top and below foam and using anti fog liquid makes problem go away even for heavy sweater like my self. Price is roughly 80$ where back in the day those were close to 120$ and you can find ones used, though do inspect and test them before use (least look for indentation from sniper point blank shot). Always test eye pro with most powerful gun allowed at the field and point blank range.

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  6 лет назад +8

      Good advice here, and the thing I should have mentioned as an alternative. I wear glasses myself but can thankfully deal with using contact lenses, for those who can't I've only heard good things about the ESS Lands Ops mentioned and they support most glasses and are fairly cheap for goggles that are properly compatible with specs. Good contribution man :)

      ESS are great stuff! I got some ESS Profile NVG as well as Wiley X Spear. The last place I'm going to save money is when my eyesight is concerned.
      It's likely possible to fix fogging issues with the Land Ops by using thermolenses, they're available for Profile NVG so likely for Land Ops as well.

      Hey! Sorry for replying here to get your attention but I was wondering if you could tell us the power of the sniper used in the video? For someone not in the UK I don't know what the limits are.
      Where I play (Denmark) the typical limit is 3.5J for snipers with MED 30 meters, so that's 615 fps / 187 m/s with 0.20g. Anything below 1.69J is zero MED.

    • @w4stedspace

    For your safety:
    Never ever get mesh goggles.
    Always test your goggles with your be gun once. Too much damage, then don't wear these to a war cause maybe they'll break through. The goggles should survive a realistic amount of shots.

    It was from relativly far away but still. Made me happy about my investment. It was a Bolle, you can still buy them. Just not that model. Dont wear mesh in general. They obscure your vision and there is a chance the BB breaks and you get schrapnel in your eye.

      Don't go full bore and buy a full military style setup at the start because if you find out it's not for you you've just wasted a ton of money. All you'll really need for your first game is a gun that you can rent from the site, some good eye protection, sturdy boots ideally with ankle protection and preferably some sort of mouth protection and a helmet. If you find that you do like it that's when you can start looking at purchasing a plate carrier, camo uniform and your own guns.

    Wish something like this was available when I started airsoft. Would have saved me some cash long term.
    I'd also add with eye protection it's worth testing the frames. I've seen glasses style protectors where the bridge snapped when they were hit.

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 6 лет назад +4

      Usually older players check new players gear by glance and if something is not right (like cheap looking eye pro, that is not from trusted manufacturer like Bolle or ESS) they tell them to go test it. Game masters then take top velocity gun (170m/s sniper) and point blank test shoot it in the lens and if frame is questionable, again to that. Test is optional, but you are playing if eye pro witch is not tested. Bolle and ESS eye pro models has been tested so many times that its pretty redundant already.
      Our field demands head band for all glasses style protectors, so those wont fly off if you fall etc. Bridge snapping is excellent point though, but i really dont see benefit on using such eye pro anyways, unless you have masochistic tendencies towards fast moving bb's.

    Very well made and quite interesting.
    I may not have any plans of ever trying out airsoft, but it is interesting to see these toys being put to the test in various ways. Still looking forward to the comparison of the two guns you bought, if you manage to get some useful footage from that in the end; the teasers looked promising.
    I may have wished for a few non-edge case shots at the different gear just to see what kind of inertia dropoff there is, but it isn't very important since the protective gear is there to save your eyes when things go wrong.
    The main reason I really wanted some shots from different distances was to see how much of an edge case it is to be shot from 20 cm away -- how much farther away do you need to be to make the bad gear at least non-awful/not break? The idea is not to legitimise the bad gear but to give an idea of _how_ bad it is in stead of only having a binary good/bad stamp.
    As always, keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the safety advice. This is a very good demonstration for airsoft players, new and old alike.
    As many pointed out, extreme cases do happen. I had one quite some years ago. I had the Bolle X500 goggles, which were perfect for wearing glasses underneath. One trade off is that there is a opening for the arm of your glasses. It does not completely seal to your face.
    Granted, you have the goggle band going over that opening, so there is only a really small angle from which BB can enter directly.
    I was shot at from the side, and one BB managed to enter into my goggle. I wasn't hurt, but it is extremely scary to see and hear a BB bounce inside your goggle when you are getting shot, and my scream ended the game with people coming over.
    That lucky (or unlucky) shot probably hit the band, bounced inside my helmet and ricochet into the opening. It lost most of its energy, so it didn't hurt my eyes.
    That is a one-in-a-billion shot, and I am now much more picky with what goggles I use

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  2 года назад

      Yeah, if you play long enough eventually you will see one of these edge cases happen, and when you do it teaches a good lesson. Hopefully people will take the advice in advance rather than having to experience it firsthand!

Do you have anything to say about the mesh face protector; or is it more or less the same story as the mesh goggles? Mesh is not essential, in fact many UK airsoft sites do not require it on site. Only eye protection is needed at all sites. It allows breathability and sound to pass through, and doesn't cover your whole face which is ideal. Some airsoft sites do require face protection but this form qualifies for it.

    Hello there ! Polycarbonate safety glasses are made to deform. Indentations are a good sign that the polycarb is absorbing the shock. I recommend ESS, Bollé, or Revision 's (my favorites). They are design to stop small high-velocity shrapnel bits. Airsoft pellets are tickles to them.
    These Guarder glasses are stupid. Interchangeable lenses are not a problem. I would even recommend them. Again, look for ESS or Revision single panoramic interchangeable lens designs ; the best you can get for any activity.

    • @Texfire
      @Texfire 6 лет назад +2

      I've struggled with finding a good pair of shooting glasses to wear over prescription lenses for years. There aren't many options out there, and wearing a second pair of goggles or glasses over glasses isn't very comfortable for extended wear.
      Currently for work applications I use the ESS Crossbow, I previously used the ICE, which can be purchased with a RX lens insert option for ANSI rated goggles at work. It's not cheap after you add in the price of lenses, but you only have two eyes and one pair will last you a long time as the exterior lenses can be replaced cheaply. I recommend them for good protection and comfort. They also have full goggles if you want even more side protection, but the ICE and Crossbow both offer adequate side protection in my opinion without being as prone to fogging.

    I have a pair of thick construction goggles that I wear. They're not made for airsoft but it has a thick rubber frame with about 1.5 inch thick polycarbonate lenses. They were given to me by my uncle, who works for a very large construction company in US Michigan. The rubber frame suctions to the skin, preventing evaporating sweat from touching the inner lens I've tested the most powerful airsoft gun I own against them, which is a Cyma Benelli M3 shotgun model that shoots 3 bbs per trigger pull. Not sure the fps of the gun but the shots from the Benelli never left a mark on them. Been shot in the face at multiple airsoft games too, and the only bad thing is that the rubber is a bit squishy, so bbs will leave tiny pockmarks on them. If I can find the brand and model of goggle, I will post it here but they are kind of expensive. My uncle told me it cost him roughly $80 USD.

    My idea of a good airsoft goggle would be a thick glass and a plastic layer in the back with a few milimeters of air inbetween. Tempered glass isn't expensive, really hard to break, but in case they do break, the plastic would catch all the fragments.

    Notable difference between NIC-level Nerf and airsoft- Mesh visors like that 6-pound one are actually perfectly acceptable for our hobby. The highest anything we use shoots in the 250-350 FPS mark, but the smallest our projectiles go is a half inch (12.7mm) across, and are rubberized on one end. So that $6 mask works for our hobby, but decidedly not airsoft, and in fact, LighTake, one of the major wholesalers we use, will sell two different lenses for these things, a mesh one for us (which won't fog up) and a plastic lens for airsoft.

    I profess myself as eye protection specialist due work and airsoft hobby. It al lbegan when I was searching for eye protection that was good and didn't fog up so easily. Let's start with my PSA
    We'll start with saying that never ever cheapskate with eye protection. You want at least drop 40 bucks. As Aaron said, accidents happen and while some supbar 15 goggles may work just fine when minimum distances are honored.. but you bet your sweet ass there'll be that one time someone does reflex shot too close with LMG or sniper rifle and takes your eye. Now to the types of protection
    Mesh goggles/masks
    These are actually super good if you know what to look for it. Especially that mask presented has cheap pot metal mesh that is easy to crack through. You want to look for stainless steel ones to avoid rust and have strong enough mesh to withstand a lot of abuse. You also need to check that the mesh holes are very small, nothing like on the goggles you see on the video. Still, mesh goggles won't last you long time. If it has dent depe enough to have BB in it, replace the goggles ASAP.
    "Workwear eyeprotection"
    The safety goggles, the lab goggles.. These are designed to protect your eyes once and that they do just swell. Which means they are bad for airsofting as good cracking hit means you need to replace your eye protection right away. Avoid these or carry spare in your gear if you must use them.
    Ballistic glasses
    Now, there were we are. I categorize actual airsoft and paintball intended protection here because they are made to take repeated impacts without denting or cracking. Get these, they are mostly pricy but if you are lucky, you might spot a deal of military surplus and get some 300 dollar goggles for as cheap as 80. Once you get those, you are guaranteed to keep your eyes intact for several years while using these type of eye protection. Definitely pricey as good ones start off around 100 buck price range. Sometimes as cheap as 30 like those ESS.
    Heck, ESS products are helluva reliable considering they provide major militaries eyeprotectiong and got good marks.
    Anti-fogging
    Yeah, this is the big problem and there are good antifog solutions out in the market. The thing is what they leave uninstructed most of the time that the solution needs to sit on the surface for 1 minute or so before you lightly wipe the excess. Too much wiping and you wipe the actual antifog coat off the lenses.

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  4 года назад

      Good write up sir! Appreciate you taking the time to list your experiences, I really should have spent a little more time on anti-fog options, you make a very good point regarding the application (and peoples frequently failure to do it properly) :)

He literally sold the masks for the same price as he bought them for (about 10$) and then threw in the glasses for free at a loss. I asked him once why he even bothered and he told me it was bcuz he saw lots of kids playing (not on his field) that would either just wear the glasses that would fall off or nothing at all. He said that the glasses have a chance of getting BBs to go around them anyway but the masks arent strong enough to stop BBs only slow them down but in the end "Something is better than nothing. You cant stop people from playing but you can do your best to protect them.".

    If in doubt get a set of goggles where the lens are rated EN166 'B' not 'F' the 'B' rating is 10 hits with a steel bb at 6 joules, which is waaay over what a 500 fps sniper is putting out. The 'F' rating is rated for 10 hits with a steel bb at 0.84 joules. Also the Z87 and especally Z87+ goggles are good too. Z87+ is a 6mm steel bb shot at the goggles at 170mph 20 times.

      The point of this video is to outline that the improbable does happen and that spending more money now for your eyes is better than losing them.
      Imagine some guy at a field has a polar star M4 or some other HPA gun, and even worse, he joule creeped it so it runs at around 450 FPS with .3g bbs, similar to your average airsoft sniper.
      This guy rounds a corner, sees you, and immediately holds down the trigger (even a quarter second trigger pull can send 8 rounds downrange) and accidentally shoots you 10 times in the exact same place, maybe even your face.
      I'd rather have a good double layer pair of polycarbonate goggles than chance my eyes with a mesh one.
      If you're talking about masks, then that's different by chipped teeth and bloody noses are no fun either.

    I've been playing Airsoft for about 2 years now and I don't recall having an experience where I needed to put a sniper barrel up to their eyes around 3-4 feet away and firing. Eye protection is essential but having to fire up close in the eyes isn't really a real scenario. Maybe if you piss off a cheater then that can happen but this doesn't really happen that often to be called a real scenario.

    Ballistic gel is not representative of an eye, the inside of your eye is filled with a gel and is protected by the sclera which must be punctured it’s honestly more likely it wont puncture unless it hits you in the cornea where it will puncture and you will lose the fluid that is clear infront of your lens, how ever it’s unlikely you will lose sight, for that it would have to destroy your optic nerve, or cones and rods
