- An enchanting crescent-shaped bay, protected on either side by two promontories, offshore from islets, is one of the most famous places of Sant'Antioco, in the extreme south-west of Sardinia.
Starting from the town of Sant'Antioco and going south along the eastern coast of the island that gives its name to the town, there are various easily accessible and 'naturally' relaxing beaches. On the other side, however, you enter between low hills covered with Mediterranean greenery and cultivated fields. The sea can no longer be seen for about ten kilometres. Then she appears, the inlet of Cala Sapone. Seeing it appear, you will understand why it is considered one of the most loved places by the people of Antioch. The sandy stretch, with a bottom of large amber colored grains mixed with shells and coral fragments, is not very wide, the northern stretch, however, has reefs and flat rocks tinted white, where it is possible to sunbathe or dive. The promontory to the right of the cove is completely covered in Mediterranean scrub, while beyond the cliff to the south you can admire a small and suggestive gulf surrounded by islets and outcropping rocks.
The water is crystal clear, with iridescent shades between blue and green. The seabed is shallow and sandy in the central part of the beach, becoming rocky near the side cliffs. A convenient car park will welcome you, with spaces reserved for the disabled close to the beach, as well as refreshment points and equipment hire. Beyond both promontories that border the beach, a series of rocky coves opens up, full of caves and ravines, a paradise for diving and snorkelling lovers. To the north, with a few steps above the flat rocks of the cliff you will reach Cala della Signora, a suggestive platform of rocks with pink hues, facing the emerald green sea. The beach, sheltered by spurs that protect it from winds and storm surges, is ideal for relaxation.
Cala Sapone is the first beach on the western side of Sant'Antioco, where there is no shortage of other postcard scenarios: two kilometers further south you will be enchanted by the natural pool of is Preneddas, dominated by the spectacular Arco dei Baci, a natural monument which, with deep blue of the water, creates a magical play of colors. To the north you will come across Cala Lunga, a green fjord that 'guards' the ocher beach, intimate and sheltered. Continuing further, here is the breathtaking panorama offered by the Nido dei Passeri, a twenty-metre high cliff overlooking the sea. Also not to be missed are Cala Sperone to the south and Maladroxia and Coaquaddus to the east. On the island there is also space for the Calasetta area with its famous beaches - Le Saline, Sottotorre and Spiaggia Grande - and the Mangiabarche lighthouse which watches over the rock and beach of the same name.
