Amy, you are so good at book reviews! I'm not even a sock knitter, but you kept me interested. Love the colors and photography in the book.

I have this book, love it! I bought it not only for it's content but also to support Summer Lee who is one cool chick. I am looking forward to knitting some of the patterns and your review is spot on!

Thanks for the great review, I found the same points about it - as an advanced mostly toe-up sock knitter I was underwhelmed with the content. That being said, it is a very pretty book and good for color inspiration especially with more basic sock pattern stitches.

also, um, if you know the weight of the yarn and the yarn name, you know the length! you just do this formula (the weight you have left in grams over the original ball weight), * the full yardage of the full skein. viola

Very good review and much in the spirit of the season, there are so many socks make alongs during summer:
Knitty Natty -Sock week, the Crazy Sock Lady ~ Summer Sock Camp, Taylor from Wool Needles Hands have one I don't remembered the name, Crochet Cakes ~Enemies To Lovers, and these are only I know for, who knows how many more are out there. A lots of places where this book will be handy.

even though it’s not a how to knit book would have liked to have a brief tutorial of magic loop, or how to knit two at a time. as a new sock knitter sometimes i need to reference techniques to start off as i forget things

I bought this book because I was excited about trying different heels, but I was super disappointed because all of the patterns in the latter part of the book are cuff down with either after thought heels or heel flap and gusset, so the patterns don't have a lot of variety in the construction. I'm using the book for inspiration and using some of the stitch patterns to make my own modified versions of the socks since I prefer a toe up sock or I occasionally do cuff down with a shadow wrap heel.

I was going to ask why she didn’t mention if the individual Sox were toe up or top down which is a very important feature to know. I am interested in toe up.

I also bought the book and I do agree with your review. I has inspired me to try new patterns and heels. I was able to buy the spiral version of the book, which is really great as the open book lies flat!

I, too, have the book. I didn’t realize there was a spiral version. That would be a plus. I haven’t yet tried any of the patterns because my sock knitting is reserved first on the go knitting. I am mostly at home, so socks get very little love in my knitting world.

Love the review. I actually got this book and LOVE it. I am knitting the Basic B socks right now and finished the Breton stripe ribbed socks a few weeks ago. She is a great sock designer and very detailed with her instructions. Makes sock knitting fun.

Funny that you mention Custom Socks Knit to Fit Your Feet, as I already own this one! In your opinion, is it worth having both books, from a technical construction and tips and tricks perspective? I am a fan of Summer Lee and watch her podcast, however I do prefer toe-up construction which is why I've been hesitant to get her book. But it is visually stunning with great photos, so I am tempted! I am also curious what additional insight she has regarding colorwork socks, as I've had several false starts getting into it (due to gauge/tension issues).

Hi Amy, I've had this book since it's very first printing because Summer Lee is amazing and it's because of her that I knit socks! But I haven't opened it except to flip through its pretty pictures because I find books a little overwhelming these days. lol BUT with you walking through it the way you did, I am ready to dive in and go to the spots in it that I'm interested in and will be helpful. Thanks so much for your excellent review!

I’ve been debating about purchasing this book because I usually use digital patterns, but I like Summer Lee”s sock patterns a lot and want to improve my sock knitting. Your review really helped me understand exactly what I might get out of purchasing this book. Most useful of all, you helped me to learn that I am the target audience for this book based on some of the tips and tutorials it contains. Thanks for the overview and review.

Totally agree with your review. I was a "little" disappointed in the book since I found the socks to be basic and I've been knitting socks for 5 years. But since I bought the book as an ebook with my Amazon "reward" money, I consider it a freebie. But I am happy that the book covers afterthought heels for example. I just recently used my "reward money" to buy Charlotte Stone's colorwork sock book. You might want to check it out.

I bought the book months ago and decided to knit the Scandiland socks.. beware! The chart is absolutely not what is pictured, and the sizing is completely off. I am so disappointed. I was knitting away and just looking at the chart and I happened to share a picture of the project to a friend and that's when I realized the project picture and my sock DO NOT MATCH. As for the sizing, it is more of a sweater sleeve than a sock... I'm a tight knitter when it comes to colour stranding, so I made sure to adjust for it all while staying within gauge... I'm almost tempted to turn it into a sweater sleeve...
otherwise, the book is full of pop colours, which caught my eye but now im a bit weary

I learned, after some disappointing experiences, to borrow a book from the library and get a really thorough look through it so I can decide whether or not it's for me. I enjoyed looking through this sock book but knew in the end that I didn't want to buy it. I do the same with cookbooks, and it has saved me an unknown amount of money and a lot of regrets! 🙂
