Hi there Matt. That is a good looking bug ….. as bugs go. I’m going to add this to my list. We finally made it to our location last Thursday, got our trailer washed and wifi hooked up today. Checked with back home and it was -27. It’s 63 here so I’m liking that. I’m thinking you’re back from your fishing trip with Jim. Hope it went well. Take care.
Fantastic tie Matt!! A lot of detail in a small package!!
Appreciate it James! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Merry Christmas Matt! Yes I am still around and check in on you from time to time. Blessings from my channel to yours 👊
Hahaha! Outstanding to hear Sarge! Hope you're doing well down in SC. All is good here in Maryland. Can you believe I'm coming up on three years doing this RUclips thing? And you've been at it consistently a little longer if I recall. I still haven't burned out but I did purposely slow down a bit last summer. Going from three videos a week to two. My growth did slow down some but I knew that would happen. Have a great Christmas my friend!
Sweet, Matt enjoy your trip and I hope you get awesome footage of you trip to share with us be careful and safe travels My Friend!!!!!!!
Thanks! Two days on the water, three different creeks, and only about three minutes of fish-catching footage. I haven't checked it yet but if it's good enough to use, I'll put it in an upcoming video. :-)
@@SavageFlies I hope it’s good enough would love to see
Really enjoy your clips, Matt. Thanks
Appreciate it Paul! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)

Appreciate it Frank! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
When small and brassie size wire was hard to find last year I bought a bunch of that hot yellow colored wire works great !!
Oh yeah, I like it too! I even bought some green UTC wire which looks pretty cool.
I like this-simple to tie and has the magic of Peacock herl too. When I start my thread I have been folding the end of the thread back over the lead wraps rather than cutting it. When I do securing wraps over the lead that keeps the thread from burying itself between the lead wraps. Can't remember if you have had this in previous videos. Have fun on your fishing trip.
Thanks Mel! I do it that way sometimes but I'm thinking I actually like the thread wraps going down in between the wire wraps. But honestly, I'll bet it doesn't matter much!
I must think like a fish, because the fly looks like something I'd bite on! I like that it's simple, attraactive, and by all accounts a success! Thank you for showing it and thank you Layton @laytonmarvin3790 for sharing it!
Sweet tie Matt! I have been tying a version of this for years and I call it the hairball because it looks like something my cats leave me every morning. I like a two-tone marabou with grey and brown being my favorite. For the wing case I like to use white or black 2mm foam. I always have a red thread head though. Size 14-16 are my faves. I use this as a tailing fly when they stop hitting a foam back emerger.
Great pointers Matt! I wonder does the foam wing case on a weighted nymph still sink well enough? Certainly an interesting concept. Thanks for the note!
That is a good looking fly Matt, let us know how you did with it on your trip...Have a great time and thanks again for the video.
Appreciate it Michael and will do! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Another nice simple one Matt, and the colors, like many others are endless. Keep the good stuff coming.
Appreciate it Dave! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Wow, nice nymph. Thanks Layton and you Matt for sharing it. It's like a juiced up PT with more wiggle from the marabou ab and tail. Looks like a lot trout food. Cool "box of chocolates" you tied up Matt. Layton, was that beautiful steelhead from an Erie trib? Thanks guys, have a safe and productive weekend. 👍
It was on the Salmon river in Poliski New York
@Layton Marvin cool, I've caught salmon there before on eggs. Never hooked a steelie there. Oswego River is a different story, lots of Chinook and big Ontario Browns, hooked a couple of steelies there, never landed them. Thanks for the reply 👍
Thanks Joe! GA was a blast... three new rivers for me. One fish in one, skunked in the next, and a couple hook-ups but nothing landed in the third. But that's life. Small stream fishing in the backcountry, in the middle of December is certainly not a numbers game. :-)
@@SavageFlies Still, you got it done. Fly fishing explorer! 🧭🗺🥾🎣🐟🤠👍
I like that ! Thanks 👍
Thanks for the slammer Matt, it looks like it will work good. Let us know how it works on your trip…
Appreciate it Rick and will do! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
That looks pretty good I need to tie a row of those for my box. I hope you have good trip this weekend when you come down here to Georgia. I would have several of those black ones in my box they should work.
Appreciate it Tony! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Neat fly
A half hitch tool is a good way to shove back some material crowding the eye, and to secure it with thread if need be.
Great tip; thank you!
That should be a good one!
Appreciate it Jim! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Hi Matt, cool pattern. I just got a new job and will be moving to Estes Park, CO. I’m curious, do you have any suggestions on fly pattern/tying books I should look into for fishing in Colorado?
Outstanding Chris! If I recall, Scott Sanchez may have been a Colorado guy. Check out his book, "A New Generation of Trout Flies." I don't think I've done a review of the book but I've definitely tied a few out of it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I hope you had a good fishing trip!
👍💪
Morning Matt. Question. What other hook size and shape would you tie this on. Good luck with your fishing trip.
Thanks Nich! For hook sizes, as a generic nymph I probably wouldn't go smaller than a 16. If you've got some damselfly nymphs in your water, a size 8-10 in an olive might work well. And I'm sure straight shank hooks would be just fine.
Is it a big clinger nymph ,stone, hellgermite baby crawdad ,bait fish who knows but as long as the hook is sharp it will catch fish
And also a damselfly nymph! Just an all-around meaty looking bug. :-)
