  • This year, Pepsi launched a new logo for the first time since 2008. Now, that might not sound like a big deal, but their last logo was very publicly detested. This was unfortunate for Pepsi because they spent a whopping $1 billion on their rebranding efforts. So, what went wrong? And why has it taken a full 15 years to finally replace it?

I was at two major Silicon Valley companies during similar re-branding efforts. They both used outside agencies, spent millions of dollars, and ended up with logos that were confusing, to say the least. It's no surprise that the new Pepsi logo done in-house looks good - who knows your company better than the people who work there? I'm always amused by companies that say "we only hire the best people" then go and hire outside consultants.

Since people are so loyal to their favorite sodas, I'm not surprised that sales didn't drop after the new logo was released.

That breathtaking design document is literally just all the concepts we learned in a first year art class at ocadu lol

The guy that made the bad logo feels like he just tried to duct tape the nike swoosh into the pepsi logo, and splattered out a whole bunch of mental gymnastics as to why it was "innovative". Pepsi's new logo is *much* better, as it feels like an evolved form of their classic, late 20th century branding.

I smell a rat when a company pays 1 billion. Some sort of money siphoning scheme that the top brass gets back.

the most interesting aspect of the 2008 rebrand, was they made the mouth bigger/smaller for the different variations of pepsi (pepsi, pepsi max, diet pepsi). regardless all that time spent into "design theory" was a total waste of time and focus got way to away from the actual brand, the product, and the audience.

Was the previous logo ugly? Yes!
Is the new one better? Absolutely!
    Does it matter? No!

I think we have reached the apex of civilization. We have nothing better to do than fret about what logo our brand of fill-in-the-blank uses. We really need to introduce wild tigers into every city so people have something real to be concerned about. The problem with apogees is it's sort of all downhill from here. Where is that comet, it's overdue.
