    Two different versions of Helena's Lo she is one of this confederacy monologue from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Demonstrating small/filmic versus big/theatrical styles of performances. Helena works either way - work with what you're good at! You can probably tell - I like the big version better! :D If you like a more filmic style, you can pull it back even more than I did.

    Loved seeing both versions of this monolouge. I absolutely loved the first one as I am really working on creating a more, natural and believeable character. It is absolutely amazing to see how she can be played in two contrasting ways. We are running this scene on Wednesday night so it should be extremly fun to experiment with. Thank you for the advice :)

      @@ShakespearewithSarah Yes I did :) I really played with the journey of the monologue and saw how I could make each though sound different and not play it all in one level. Went with the more naturalist version as I felt I connected with it more x

    Hey Sarah,
    Tysm for this helpful video!
    I want to do this monologue for my recall but it has to be 1 minute long.
    I shortened it a bit:
    Lo, she is one of this confederacy!
    Now I perceive they have conjoin'd all three
    To fashion this false sport, in spite of me.
    Injurious Hermia! most ungrateful maid!
    Have you conspired, have you with these contrived
    To bait me with this foul derision?
    Is all the counsel that we two have shared,
    The sisters' vows, the hours that we have spent,
    When we have chid the hasty-footed time
    For parting us,--O, is it all forgot?
    All school-days' friendship, childhood innocence? (...) So we grow together,
    Like to a double cherry, seeming parted,
    But yet an union in partition;
    Two lovely berries moulded on one stem;
    So, with two seeming bodies, but one heart;
    (..)
    And will you rent our ancient love asunder,
    To join with men in scorning your poor friend?
    It is not friendly, 'tis not maidenly:
    Our sex, as well as I, may chide you for it,
    Though I alone do feel the injury.
    Do you think it’s okay to cut it down like this?

    hi, this really helped me and i watched the breakdown of this monologue. i have to do this monologue for a dramatization in english class. i’m kinda scared because i have absolutely zero acting experience and i’m not rly into it. do u have any advice that would help me succeed for the first time?

    • @ShakespearewithSarah
      @ShakespearewithSarah  3 года назад

      I guess I would ask first - what’s stopping you from getting into it? Is it that you don’t like the story or the character, or is it more because you don’t understand what it means or how to tackle it? Or do you mean you’re just not really into acting?

      @@ShakespearewithSarah ok so i love the character and i love this scene which is why i chose it, because it really speaks to me. but... i’m not really into acting which is why it is hard for me to act out this character

    • @ShakespearewithSarah

      Well, bear with me here... is it possible you 'not being into acting' is actually just you holding back because it's scary or overwhelming? My gut feel is that the thing that will help you is to be brave and really dive into this character as much as you can. Go for the 'big' version, go 'over the top' (you can always pull it back later) and try to enjoy the language. If there's someone you trust in your English class who can practice it with you, so you can pretend they are Hermia and you can get upset with them, that will help too - but only if you REALLY trust them to support you. I'm assuming that lots of people in your class are feeling nervous about having to perform, so you won't be the only one, but if you really dig deep and give it your best shot, you'll probably be one of the few that really knocks everyone's socks off.
      Amy Poehler says, "There's power in looking silly and not caring that you do."
      This character is very silly and you have to be ready to go there!
      Go big or go home I think! 😁😂 Hope that helps! Good luck. ❤️
