He's not trying to provoke him, he's just playing devil's advocate as a way of lobbing him softballs which let him make his talking points in lengthy answers. It's the exact opposite of what a true provocateur, e.g. Bill O'Reilly does-asking an incendiary leading question and then cutting off his guests in the middle of their answer. Norman came across as passionate but entirely rational and his answers weren't edited to make him look bad. He throws Abe Foxman the same softball type questions and Foxman proceeds to utterly embarrass himself like the raving psychotic he is. In other words, he just prods people enough to reveal who they really are. The film itself is heavily critical of the ADL and their politicization of supposed antisemitism.

I like and respect this man because of the fact that he is an outsider. If Norman would have "played the game" he could have had the world in his hands. The fact that the authorities came at him personally, took his job, barred him from entering Israel and defamed his reputation is reason enough. Just for speaking the inevitable reality. Terrible filming and documenting. The guy kept constantly an hostile vibe, changing camera angles, following everywhere without a proper place for the discussion. A israeli stalker attacking a dissident, couldn't have been worse filming. Finkelstein is on a category by himself, giving his life to the cause of human rights and justice. He handled it quite well but i don't think he should have allowed it to be filmed and edited in that way, he deserves a better documentary.

@eastariel I think it stings harder when delivered more cleanly. Like I said, I agree with 100% of the content. It is however important to understand who your audience is. The funny thing is he isn't even a radical in any way. He is advocating for nothing more than the rule of international law and not using the holocaust as a means for a political end or a profit machine. With a few subtle changes to his delivery, he would be heard by everyone.

Finkelstein has an extremely naughty sense of humor. Within the context of the film, however, he sounds very reasonable, particularly in contrast with that windbag Foxman.
