The instructions which come with your Koni 88 or 90 shock absorbers are rubbish. So once I learned how to adjust my own Koni shock absorbers, I made this quick tutorial. How to adjust your Koni 88 or RAID 90 shock absorbers.
Brilliant. Had no chance with the hieroglyphics! Thanks Cobber.
Super clear explanation. Thanks Alex!
I installed a set of Koni shocks on my 1975 BMW 2002, 37 years ago. While that car isn't my daily driver, I do track it and they've got a lot of miles on them. They're still as good as the day I got them. The fronts have adjustable damping and I can literally dial in understeer or oversteer depending upon the balance desired, with a simple with turn of the knob. Truly amazing shocks. Highly recommended.
Awesome thanks for this Mate! Just what I needed
Really helpful - you're dead right about the cryptic manufacturer instructions! Looking forward to getting mine fitted to my old Renault 17 now I know how to set the damping properly 👍
I actually used this to adjust mine over the weekend, Cheers Alex!
Great shocks (got them in my 80 series) but man what a pain in the arse to adjust.
Btw I reckon this is the best DIY video I’ve ever seen, cheers.
Thanks mate! Yeah I wasn't planning to film this but the instructions were so dumb that I thought surely other people are gonna be struggling enough to turn to RUclips!
Thanks for taking the time to help us out. I'm looking at the pamphlet instructions thinking exactly the thoughts you framed so well.
My issue is that the shocks will not open far enough to let the rubber stop out.
I think I'll just give up and fit them as is. I'm so disappointed in the price I paid for these things for what they are...
Nice explanation, I did wonder how to adjust mine, Cheers.
Definitely want to see more backyard mechanical!!!
awsome to the point and super clear! thank you!
Good job Alex.
Thanks Alex! I had 88's and raids in my old DX coil cab and couldn't for love nor money understand that BS "instructions" they supply! As you said... Nothing on RUclips either so I left them as factory for 5 years! LOL
Put under armour in the new DX wagon as adjustments were able to be done without removal.
Keep up the great videos mate... Nailed it yet again
Thank you very much for this guide.
Crikey! Thanks mate!
Coool! Another backyard mec vid!
Yeah two in a couple of hours! 😁 nice simple one just to make it easy for those who might be trying to adjust these things and don't want to sift through a 20 minute video 🙂
Legend. Thanks mate 👍
Nice one bud :) Obviously I don't have a Patrol (yet..... Disco miiiiight get replaced with a Y62 V8 later on) but always interested to know about how things work :) Cheers, Don (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Good job mate
Nah mate, in here because i love the videos
Great work there alex will definitely be a godsend for koni purchasers.
Could you please comment on reasons for choice of said shocks over other choices on market in similar price market . Im looking to change my crappy Raw shocks to something better was thinking fox shocks .
Lowest setting is calibrated to factory standard setting. Be cautious as many ( including me ) have had way too much rebound at one turn, causing handling issues.
It is very time consuming adjusting the 90series Koni's on the rear of my 105 series landcruiser as the top plate of the shock mount has to be removed. The softest setting bounces like a kangaroo in dune country in the Simpson desert. Adjusted them 2 full turns rear and 1 on the front and fixed the problem but took a good 30 min each side on the side of the track for the rears with 320lb/in King Coils. Fronts a easy as there no built in bumper stop. The previous 86 series I owned , had no internal bumps and were easy to adjust. So I'm wondering if you could leave the bumps out on the 90 series rears without damaging the shocks. In saying that I will be replacing them for quality remote reservoirs that can be adjusted at a turn of a dial. Shocks preformed well at above settings at 3.6t offroad and I notice no harshness now at 3.2t general driving
Nice mate
Is it OK to leave the soft setting right at the very end of the anti-clockwise direction? I recall seeing something from KONI about bringing it back a small amount off the end point. I think to protect the adjuster system but I'm not sure. Also, is it ok to leave it back a 1/4 turn? You were describing 1/2 turn setting increments, are these mandatory set points or is a 1/4 turn increment also OK? Thanks for a great video. So much more detail than the factory video. Well done.
Hi,
what is your feedback about your king springs ? Are you happy with your choice ?
Still a good vid, an yes, just bought sum 4 my GU..
Nice
👍👍
Are koni classica the same way?
Hi
Great simple demonstration for us simple people
Just curious what model shock did you go for ?
Ands what’s the difference between the KONI 82 or 88 or 90 in the 50mm lift GQ series 👍
These are the Koni 88s, I can't recall the model number or the specific differences but mayyybe it was that the 82s aren't adjustable, and each increasing number was a bigger bore size
Hi bro, I got 90 at front. Can I adjust it without removing it? Can I loose the bolt at bottom and compress it? thanks
It depends on your vehicle setup. You may be able to remove the bottom bolt, remove the rubber block, compress it, make the adjustment, then re fit the rubber block and replace the bottom bolt.
Did you leave it on the softest?? I am installing the 90s on my 2008 Mercedes G500.
Thanks!
Yep left it at the softest
is it more soft now ?
Anas Aldosary Yes it is sooo much better. I had Bilsteins prior, they made the G ride like a wagon. So glad I swapped out.
335i101 koni raid or koni heavy duty ?? did u replace all4 shocks or just the front
Anas Aldosary I did all four. Koni Raid and ORC springs. (With that setup is also provided about a 2” lift)
Miss the content Alex. Did these shocks come with the softest setting, and are you still happy with these?
Thanks Jim 🙂 I don't think they did come on the softest setting, I can't recall what they were set to though. Still very happy with them! Performing flawlessly and very comfortable
@@Alex.G Thanks for the reply Alex. I bought a set of 88s and will now check the shocks before I install them
Koni. The best shock but the worst adjustment mechanism. These days everyone else has an external adjuster. Come on Koni get with the program. PS really push hard on the rubber spacer to lock it back in and check it after a short run. It has a habit of dropping out onto the ground if not wedged back in just right. PPS the shocks are serviceable but good luck finding someone who does that work, not Koni dealers anymore!
For the record I'm on second set of Raids after 300,000km. The old ones still worked a bit but they earned their retirement.
Yeah I agree about the adjustment, I have left mine on the "factory" setting for 6 years as they work just fine (thank goodness) - you don't really want super hard shocks on a 4WD (as opposed to a tarmac vehicle). I don't understand why they went that route with the shocks as I had Koni adjustables in a Commodore VH 30 years ago and they were adjustable via the top of the shaft with a 40mm plastic knob that you just pushed on - adjusted - removed. Literally a 2 second job once the boot or bonnet was opened.
@@dingodazz3724 yeah same, had the externally adjustable Koni’s in my VH SL/E
@@andrewsteele914 I only had the SL version :(
Ever since the yanks bought koni from the Danish they stopped being the innovators. Seems to happen to every company the yanks buy up.
First 10 seconds fuck yea
I believe they are not as good these days..I just purchased pair for front of dodge charger..3 times adjusted them..in the end I wound them up full 2 turns hardest setting.. less was too soft and spongy..I believe bilsteins are far superior these days
Sorry mate, robbah stoppah...? :D
Yeah stops people from stealing ya shock absorbers 😁
What a pain in the ass ..I’ll stick to my tuff dog adjustable for half the price
