    "I mean at the heart of it is the throughline; that we have to tell the truth and be courageous enough to tell the truth, and once we tell the truth about what we've done and who we are then what we can free ourselves into imagining a different world and imagining ourselves doing differently. We're shackled by categories. We're shackled by our lies. We're trapped in this fantasy. You know America thinks of itself as Never Neverland. You know. We're full of lost boys and lost girls. We don't want to be responsible and held accountable for _anything._
    "So we have to tell the truth and here we are in a moment of moral reckoning where the country can be otherwise but every single time we try to give birth to a new nation, the umbilical cord of white supremacy is wrapped around its neck. So we have to tell the truth. We have to be truthful and be really responsible midwives, so that we can give birth, finally, to a new country that is a genuinely multiracial democracy. Our history says we're not gonna do very well but I have faith, because wherever human beings are, again, we have a chance."
    Whoo. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a man who knows how to build a metaphor.

      MLG GAMER Baldwin is an unbelievable writer. I've seen a couple different videos on YT of Baldwin in the 70s I believe. One was the Dick Cavett show. Cavett had tons of really good interviews with all sorts of interesting people. I was in high school in the early 70s and Cavett and David Frost were both good shows. Some of my favorites to rewatch now are Muhammad Ali interviews. There's a special one I'd never seen before because it was an Irish talk show and never shown in the US at the time. It's Muhammad Ali - Wake Up and Apologize on reelblack website. Back then when things were starting to change a lot, people were discussing race more openly I think. White people aren't as politically correct and seems like truth comes out more. This reelblack website has tons of great interviews and so does this guy David Hoffman. There's a really good one called The Most Intense Heartfelt Description of Racism I Ever Filmed. Ok MLG that was a whole lot more than you expected lol. Now I'm going to go check out Prof. Glaude cause I don't know much about him he definitely seems worse readin/watching. If you're interested I've got a couple of other really good professors/lecturers I've been watching lately on black history.

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 4 года назад +9

    Lately, my reading about _Brown vs. the Board of Education_ has brought me to the impression that the study of segregationists can be incredibly illuminating. They wanted to segregate the ethnic groups (among other reasons) because they wanted to maintain the distance necessary to generalize the public perception of black people. They wanted to feed into this image that black people are, universally, a certain way. Consistently, this was how the public discourse over blacks went at the time.
    "Black people don't do this."
    "Black people don't do that."
    "Black people can't do this."
    "Black people can't do that."
    So it seems to me that one really good way to fight segregation is to talk, publicly, about _individual_ black accomplishments. _Individuals_ in the black community who have accomplished things, like for example, the first man to reach the geographic North Pole (Matthew Henson) or the first man killed in the Boston Massacre (Crispus Attucks).

Keeping a journal is like free writing. Spelling and grammar don't matter. Only you will see it anyway. Use it to plan the day, vent, record the day, vent, express ideas, vent, whatever you need to do. Then you can respond with intelligence instead of reacting with emotion alone to the mess we are in.

    I lived 11 miles outside the Detroit riots as a little girl and since then I have had many black? friends and even actually loved some of them. I also have a mixed race son and as a so called white girl have been discriminated against due to that. This man is on target but how can you not feel anger when your being treated badly because you are one or associate with them. And that's the thing of it you have to be willing to forgive and love and get past the ignorant ones yes it's ignorance it can come from both sides, if it means doing things alternatively or different ways as long as you are being non violent, but I do admire Malcolm and without him there would have been no change. It isn't OK to hang a person deprive them just because they are not just like you. What's wrong with that? Everything.

    Just remember not everyone in America is racist and not all white people are racist. Also remember there is racism in Every race against other races. I grew learning this with an immigrant mother who's family was told to go home many times. No she was discriminated against for the color of her skin she was discriminated against because where she was from and the language she spoke. Black people are racist too cause they wanted nothing to do with my family. I understand they have had it bad for way too many years but it is still going on with other people/races as well. Laws should be changed Nd I hope Biden gets in and a better president after him so we can move forward instead of stepping backwards like we did with Trump. Only time will tell.

    8:00 Yes, we're living in a fantasy world, where we are the heroes, with doing nothing better than sitting on our asses with screens draining our life force away. I gave up news for 3 years recently. I couldn't take what was happening. Now, I'm paying attention, and doing things, not just watching.

    When Prof. Glaude spoke about seeing a knee in the back of a black man as he visited another country, where he could go back to his hotel and let it go, he basically experienced the life of a white, male ally. He surely cared but he didn't have to commit to being his fight. That was his one opportunity to experience what white privilege is like and I wonder if he realizes that.
