"This is why they're rich & famous... and I'm just a f*cking... prog guy" Mike is the best lmao
He saw vanilla 🤣
Right I loved his rendition he had energy that I couldn't have imagined to give to that song
Oh. I thought he saId prop guy, as a joke because he has a lot of drums. But yeah he says prog guy for sure the second time.
Yeah, some of us like prog.
i mean he is rich and famous 😂
Please NEVER stop doing these ‘for the first time’ videos!! They’re the best thing on RUclips!
Agreed! I'm not a drummer at all, but these are entertaining
It totally is. It's taken off with other instruments too. They're all amazing. It's so interesting to hear what a totally different drummer puts in
@@schiiirm Oh! Do you have a channel recommendation for the same concept with other instruments?
Amen!
These and @rickbeato ‘s WMTSG series.
I don't always listen to Nickleback, but when I do, Mike Portnoy is drumming.
I never knew I needed a “fuller” version of this song
fullerup
😮😮😮😮😂😂😂😂
Mike's superpower is his ability to find the heart of the song and then just build on top of it. He is one of the most melodic drummers I have ever listened to.
True actully. He uses a massive kit on most of his stuff but he tells a story with it.
Every change in the mood he mirrors with a change in his drumming. While he is playful he doesn't lose the emotional core of what makes the song. He is a storyteller, which is crazy for his instrument. I don't know any other drummer like this.
You’re right 🤝
Him and Gavin Harrison
Give Kai Hahto or jukka Nevalainen a listen
@@mpainter22 I mean jukka lists portnoy as one of his inspirations and images and words as his favorite album so I thin that is not a bad comparison even though I wouldn't have thought of it myself, because musically they are different but you are right they aren't miles apart when it comes to their vibes. but I think hato is actually a very different drummer. Like he is amazing but I always felt like he had to fit a mold in nightwish and when he plays for wintersun you can hear what I imagine comes more naturally to him.
Mike's genuine surprise at there not being any double bass at all was heartwarming and adorable!
yea I think that reaction is gonna live rent free in my head from now on, lol.
I totally agree on the double bass on the latter part tho.
My guess is the off-camera conversation was something like
MP: Does Nickelback do any double bass stuff?
Drumeo: Actually, yes, a little bit.
MP: Okay, I'm going with double bass on the chorus
Drumeo: We said A LITTLE BIT. As in, their whole career.
MP: Whatever, let's go!
😂😂😂
I genuinely don't think Portnoy knows how to play without double bass any more. It's as ingrained in him as much as 4/4 is in the average drummer. I think even if he had no feet he would still do double bass! Such a mad man
My uncle Sam was born with missing calves and feet and forearms and hands. He had a little non-moveable nub at the end of each "elbow", that's all. Same with his "legs". Yet he could drive a car, hunt with a rifle, and fish. He'd also beat us kids in wrestling most of the time. And some of us were as old as 15 and played football. So what you say about Portnoy having no feet yet still being able to play double bass, is likely true. If Sam could catch fish without arms I bet Sam could play double bass without feet. @@Jamesnpk
He literally improved the song by 1000%
You are really cool and your underground music is really cool. Can you s your own d?
How? He played it normal. Like he didn’t do anything major.
I thought he improved the song FIGURATIVELY.
Not really

I love how humble Mike is in this video. He understands that impressive, complicated drumming isn't what got Nickelback to where they are today, and that the simpler, laid back drumming and a simpler style in general is what helped Nickelback reach popularity (or infamy, whatever you wanna say). He also appreciates the choices taken on the original drum track and learns off it, which is a great thing. I love his remark hilarious about how he's just a "50 year old santa claus/prog guy". Amazing drummer.
Mike is a true veteran in terms of music sessions. We all knew him through DT or Liquid Tension, but if you listen to his work with Avenged Sevenfold, Winery Dogs and other stuff, clearly shows a great versatility.
just goes to show you how nickelback is definitely Pop Rock hence the mainstream success . Prog isn't palatable for most music fans/ casual music lovers
Also interesting is that Nickelback's drummer, Daniel Adair, is actually a huuuge prog head himself. The guy can play his ass off, has rather weird side projects where he gets it all out. In some interview here on the RUclipss, when asked to name a song that influenced him as a musician, he gave a song by the Allan Parsons Project, which speaks volumes
@@muenchhausenmusic That's epic!
@@muenchhausenmusic which matches perfectly with the fact that he tried to hire Mike to replace him after surgery

Right!!! It reminds me of the movie Amadeus where Mozart comes in and punches up Salari’s song in front of the king. 😂😂😂. Especially at the end where he analyzes the original.
That part at 8:00 was amazing to see and hear. Blew my mind XD
I couldn’t agree with you more!
And he said : "i would have been fired immediately ! "xd
Uhuh. I agree. If mike played for nickelback, id listen to their music. Haha.
You can’t unhear Mike’s double kick on the chorus! Once you listen to this take, the original will never be the same again.
I thought the same, makes it so much beefier
100% double bass makes this song..
Oh yeah.. Ooooh yeah.. I hope it's not a crime to say this: Better than the original.. Waaay better..
Yup the double bass just brings that song to a whole new level
For us drummers that are car guys: Mike was presented a barn-find and built it to street race😈@stevea1519
It's always interesting when you give a musical genius something simple.
I love that accidentally stopping in the wrong spot and then just rolling with it. Strangely comforting knowing that someone as experienced and talented as Mike Portnoy makes the same simple mistakes I do when learning or creating new songs

I'd love to hear him do Pull Me Under solo. - Tried forever to do that on Expert on Band Hero
Hey Brandon, would love to hear Gasoline by Soundgarden on this series. A unique interpretation by a drummer outside that genre would be fun.
That double bass in the chorus gave me goosebumps, damn that sounded good
My philosophy on drumming (not a drummer) has always been "when in doubt, just double kick"
Duuuude, it weirdly made nickelback a metal band for a sec
Kind of bent the melody out of shape... He should stick to prog metal and leave the hard rock to the pros...
Wild to think he “fucked it up” lol his take was significantly better in my opinion!
yeah and he plays that like nothing is going on with comparing origianl song.
The reason Mike said “This is why they’re rich and famous and I’m just a prog metal guy” is because he realized how good and, more importantly, appropriate the original drum track was for that song after he listened back to the original drums (even tho he disagreed about the chorus and it’s lack of double kick). He wasn’t saying that in jest.
That being said, he absolutely killed that for a first playthru and I wish some of his parts were in the actual song bc of how good that guy grooves. My favorite drumeo vid like this so far 🤘
I took it as him acknowledging that you have sacrifice a lot to make a song simple & radio-friendly. I'd be surprised if he thought it was better.
@@cascadesequence7307Yeah i was sensing that he thought the original drums was definitely lacking and was just finding a way to be polite. So fair play to him.
It was like thanking your Nan for an awful sweater you got for Christmas knowing you’re never gonna wear it.
@@animoley8012 I'm not sure I fully agree with the analogy. You can find something lacking and then do what he did here and make it better, but in the analogy you're never going to do anything with the sweater. He liked NB enough to agree to do the gig with them. Hearing this, I kinda wish they'd had the chance...
It's brilliant how he 'anticipates' the structure and gives the song space and yet supports it dynamically without knowing the song. Really great instinct!

I agree.. especially when Mike started playing along with double pedals on the chorus.. its like a different flavor than the record..
I’d love to hear a mashup of the two drum lines. I think overall the original Nickleback drum line worked in the versus.
But Mike’s chorus was on point. And his fills were better too.

@@blinddog4288 You disagree that other people can pick out Portnoy playing based on his style?
Agreed. I'm not a Nickelback guy but I'm super familiar with this song from its time as the WWE Raw theme, so to hear this version really emphasised what Mike actually does. It can be lost, or at least more subtle, with DT stuff as they're all doing the same maestro, next level building game with each other, but to take what is a super basic song with simple musicianship and then add one master...damn, it really makes it pop. I can't wait to hear what he'll do with DT.

Facts, he’s incredible
Man, I love the mikes vibes, really love this guys, please keep making vids with him 🥹
Unreal. Saving this to a playlist. Thanks guys.
Mike's version breathes such life and energy into this song. That's why he's THE Drummer Prog God that he is!!
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
@@82mangini Neil Peart
@@AllyMonsters Peart? 😂😂😂😂😂
Peart is not a top drummer
He is like Portnoy. More fame than technical skills
@@82mangini You don't use a 30 pc drum set and say you got no technical skills.
@@AllyMonsters Portnoy is a good drummer but not in The most skilled and technical drummers league
I love how he absolutely approaches the song with a metal music mindset, as opposed to a rock one, and just completely changes how the song sounds for the better.
I love it.
Effortless...mike you are amazing. Welcome Home Maestro!!!
The chorus changes and how he handles the bridge…man is a god
I always felt double bass in the chorus would really bring back the heavy feeling Nickleback once had. No surprise Mike makes it stick. Need more of this
tbf the song works well live with the crowd getting involved with the "hey" bit. a double bass might take away from that.
@@benjambreegI think for the general (pop) audience the double bass as well as all the fills would have been to much.
But I totally agree, it makes the song so much more interesting.
It’s too much man. You need to learn how to write a pop song. This is a very niche community watching this video. The average Joe just wants to get drunk with friends and sing along to some tunes. You cant do that if the vocals are covered up by thumping double bass
@jd0879 why does he need to learn to write a pop song?
He basically said if Nickleback wants to get their balls back, as in not pop...
yeah for sure. Definitely was tasteful there.
It's not lost on me that the editing and mixing on these videos is what allows us to experience how brilliant these artists really are. Thanks again, guys!
Yes! And the II/Dream token video was just as F’n good!!!
Mike!!! Your creativity is truly amazing!!! This was so good.
If that concert had come to fruition and your were there that woukda been a treat to see and hear!
The speed at which Mike reacts to his flub in the breakdown section, realizes what part he' s in, and instantly corrects within a second is masterful. That's how you recognize a true pro.
And this ladies and gentlemen is Mike Portnoy. One of the best.
Straight up genius
I concur.
hell yeah
Snapiests Snare and Kick in History. He has the rest as well, but as soon as you hear the Snare and Kick you know it's him. It's not the mic'ing, he mutes the skin after every hit it seems. And steady like a metronome.
*The Goat*
He NAILED it and on the first try too. This was a freaking sick drum track. I wish it was recorded like this for real.
This one's the best. Great job drumeo 🎉❤
I LOVE how he half-timed the snare hits on the second chorus, that actually made the song so much better, to be honest!
YES! That part got me aswell. Very simple but it gives some fresh air to the track while building up for the rest of the chorus. So cool!
its nickleback that shit is weak, it needs a kick u the ass.
To be fair, it kinda took the pump out of the pumpy song. It sounded cool, but not for this song.
Mike Portnoy is what happens when you combine prog chops with a rock and roll mindset. His parts can be quite intricate, but his groove and energy is infectious.
Mike made this song so much better. Love he was so humble. Cool dude.
I love those rolls and double kicks coming in savage!!!!
Brandon's silent (at least for us) "Yeeeeeeesssss" at the chorus double bass is just such a cute little treat, more or less showing how everyone watching this video felt at that exact same moment. LOVE these videos!
Went to write this and thought “nah somebody will have already said it” so I looked for the comment.
That moment was my own premature evacuation
"C'mon, where is the double bass!" - love the comment. Brandons "YEEEESSSSS" makes me smile like an idiot each time I look at this video, which I've done more than I can admit.
I absolutely love this set up with Drumeo. Such a fun play on the music "most" of us know.
