Gateways of power: building your own service mesh | Miles Bryant

There are many excellent open source and managed service mesh technologies in the ecosystem, so building your own service mesh seems like an absurd choice, which is why we've done it three times at Monzo - from our early days adopting Linkerd 1, to our current Envoy-based mesh with full mutual TLS, traffic authorisation and cross-cluster networking. We'd like to share our experience from the trenches of building and operating our own service mesh. I'll talk about our constraints, how we came to the decision and how our custom service mesh works. I'll also share many of the lessons we've learned over the years, both the benefits and some of the pain points. Finally, I'll finish up with our future service mesh plans and where we want to go next.
