  • WLS 89 Chicago - Yvonne Daniels - November 15 1979
It was probably the most popular radio station in the midwest. 89 WLS Chicago.
It was ABC’s Top 40 powerhouse from the 1960s into the 1980s.
The names of the DJs who worked at WLS is a list of the best of the best in the radio business... Larry Lujack, Tommy Edwards, Bob Sirott, Fred Winston, Joel Sebastian, Chuck Napp, Art Roberts, Dick Biondi, John Records Landecker, Chuck Buell... and I could go on & on.
This aircheck features one of the few females & African Americans on WLS, the legendary Yvonne Daniels. In 1973, she was the first female air personality hired by WLS. Yvonne worked at several stations including WYNR, WCFL during it's jazz days and WSDM-FM, before getting the call to come to The Rock of Chicago.
On air, Yvonne was tight, brief, & lively, and could definitely compete with the boys.
She was heard by listeners across the country, as she held down the overnight shift for nearly eight years, before she moved across town to WVON, WGCI and later WNUA.
Sadly, Yvonne Daniels passed on in 1991 at 54 years old.
This aircheck features Yvonne Daniels on WLS from 1979.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

I lived in Arkansas and got WLS at night and in the morning. Called Yvonne to make requests overnight many times during the 1970s. She would talk with me for quite a while each time and her voice and personality were so great. I was devastated when she passed on. RIP Yvonne.

Yvonne befriended my mom in the late 60s and she encouraged my mom to work in radio my mom got an internship at WSDM or was it N it was a station ahead of its time having all women djs. My mom and Yvonne remind friends up until Yvonne passed away a few years later my mom passed away they both loved each other very much even Yvonne's mom became friends we lovingly called her Grandma Gordon she had pecan trees in her Florida yard and every year up till I went into the army Grandma Gordon would send me pecans every year. I woke up this morning feeling sad and home sick..... thanks for helping me remember the exciting and cool life that I have seen thus far... sometimes I forget how lucky I am. ❤😊

I listened to LS from 1968 till 1980. So many greats the younger generation will never know. I worked the night shift and called her several times for requests. Such a great personality and lovely person with a velvet voice. Love Yvonne always!

I worked at WCNC, Elizabeth City, NC 1978-1980, and I loved hearing Yvonne's sweet voice from my hometown, Chicago, as I drove to sign on for my morning DJ shift. Great way to start the day!

I was in the Marines and somehow got stationed at Naval Air Station Glenview in 1973 (?) and The "Den of Daniels" was my favorite radio entertainment. I had no idea who she was, what she looked like, or anything else, but I had crush on her. I loved her voice, her delivery, and the music she played. Even now, when I think of the most memorable DJ in my life, it was Ms. Daniels.

Awesome air check! I used to listened to Yvonne on skip down in Louisiana most every morning, as I was getting ready to go in for my morning drive shift at a couple of local stations. Good memories!

I miss this era when you could hear a live version of a current hit on a pop/rock station. That live version of Journey's "Lovin Touchin Squeezin" was cool to hear!

Ms Daniels was smooth like butter. I could listen to her voice all day and not get bored. Such elocution. Why do today's female presenters /DJ's always sound like they have a beef with everyone?
Also, does anyone know why there was so much reverb on their mics back in the day?

And yes, the admins of the two tribute sites gave me permission to use these from their collections... Links in replies.

Yvonne was my must listen to on WLS on my drive to my own radio station small market job in Anniston, Alabama for several years. The WLS signal boomed into Northeast Alabama around 4:30-5:00 in the morning. I had not heard her voice for years until I found this aircheck. Note: The WLS signal in the winter months would fade in by 4:30 to 5:00 most afternoons.

Thanks for including the newscast that preceded the 3 A.M. Central portion of her show as it featured a late breaking news item on the Iran hostage crisis, even though it was a case of an ABC owned radio station broadcasting a news item originating from CBS.

IM A 41 YR BROADCASTER .(how the heck is this women LEGENDARY ?).yes she has a VERY GOOD VOICE.not a great voice.but very good.(but overall she WAS a dry as hell.NOTHING more then a time and temp talk up to the posts gale.MAYBE the secret programming wizes at WLS told her to shut the "F" up . no creative talk at all.(yes the music was fantastic back then).but her verbal content was VOID OF EVERYTHING that made a human legendary on the air.(maybe her ratings were great which made her legendary......i don't know).but what I do know.........she was nothing more then a TIME AND TEMP on air robot.(sad).& ironically that is what ALL top 40 music radio stations in 1982 DE EVOLVED INTO.which then destroyed all of terrestrial music radio.(your comments are welcomed).

You may have a slight argument except it comes down to you don't know who she was, where she came from, how and when she got there... her pedigree, lineage or questions of what?, when?, or how? she had to climb her way up the ranks and files of becoming or getting notoriety! You sound like a jealous, bitter and hateful disc jockey because perhaps you haven't gained popularity, she had a unique way with her voice and (unlike you) she was very professional! I believe it's because she was a woman of Jewish or African decent is the reason for your disrespectful racist responds...she worked very hard and perfected her craft for over 8 years (loyalty) at WLS (along with the other) radio stations which many disc jockey's weren't back in the day--moving from station to station! Give credit or credence to those questions...plus think about honoring this deceased woman's achievements, rather tearing down! Wow, it's enough evil & ignorance in this fallen world without trying to destroy someone's legacy--you wouldn't like it if this was a deceased family member of yours people disgraced!
