    Pigeon pie was actually very common for certain families. My grandfather talked about them eating it and every other thing about how he grew up. He left school at 11 and worked since he was 14 until he was 70 with an interval to work on a boat. Pigeons were easy to catch for food because of the overpopulation when communicating via carrier pigeon became obsolete.

    We have water voles too, sadly very rare now, back in the day often mistaken for a rat, whilst swimming, persecution through mistaken identity and habitat destruction ( for progress / profit ? have decimated the indigenous population of these beautiful and fascinating rodents. very sad.

    • @petermoody6147
      @petermoody6147 8 месяцев назад +1

      To: @lordflashget8780 - Indeed! A major problem has been the unnatural breakage of corridors between suitable habitats.
      Water voles are extremely territorial so a viable population needs a sizeable habitat and genetic diversity requires that these habitats are interlinked.
      This issue is a 'hidden' but critical component in the preservation of many species

      Voles have tails, but the length depends on the species, Common vole (Microtus arvalis), Eastern meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), Western meadow vole (Microtus drummondii) etc, have tails a couple inches. There's even a Long tailed vole (Microtus longicaudus), that has a tail length about the size of your typical House house (Mus musculus). The Water vole (Arvicola amphibius) tail length is about half the length of a Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) tail, just to name a couple, there are many more vole species all having tails in different lengths. Was you thinking of Lemmings or Hamsters that typically have a tail length of a couple centimeter? Typically Voles are more rounder looking with a blunter face. If it has a short tail you can assume it's a Vole, if it has a long tail don't assume it's a Mouse.

    In the UK voles are also known as water rats because they make their homes in the banks alongside rivers and other water courses, they are just as at home swimming in water as they are on land. In the children's book 'Wind in the Willows' the character 'Ratty' is supposed to be a vole. They are seen as an animal at the bottom of the food chain. In the UK in recent years their numbers have gone into a serious decline, but there are groups breeding them in captivity to release back into the wild, because they still have an important role in British fauna.

      @@kmcarchive8288 Water rat is a incorrect name for the Water Vole (Arvicola terrestris), this is because of a book, The Wind In The Willows, the character "Ratty" not a Rat, but in fact a Water vole, Water Voles are a bigger Vole species, more around the size of a Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).
