I've already been learning for one year and now I had a year break. I was discouraged at the beginning because the learning process is so slow for me, I feel like I'm always gonna suck at harp, I can't imagine myself as this person who learned the harp well and plays for others, whether at small musical events or for therapy, and this is something I had in mind when I bought my harp. I also have irrational thoughts that it's too late to achieve this dream and other goals too. Your words inspired me, because I definitely need to forgive myself - I'm not doomed to be a failure, I had other things in my life going on, so I'm letting the guilt go and starting a new page :)

This is a great video Christy. You are so positive and motivating. I started in 2009 at age 51! I thought I would be fabulous by now, but I am not. Unfortunately, due to my work situation at the time and then health problems, I didn't make much progress the first few years. Eventually I became too ill to play at all and was going to give it up. Then last year I decided to give it another go and found a teacher who is extremely patient with my health ups and downs and always encourages me, even if it takes me months to get one tune down. I realize I probably won't achieve any of the dreams I initially had when I started out, but it brings me joy and gives me something to do so I feel like I am productive on some small level. Being chronically ill is very isolating as you have to give up so many things. Playing the harp is wonderful because it is something I can do at my own pace in my own home. I may never be as good as I would like to be, but at least I have goals to work towards!

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад +2

What a challenging and beautiful story, thank-you for telling me about that. Wow, it sounds like life has taken some rough turns, but I admire your commitment to following the things you love even when it's slow and frustrating at times. The wonderful thing about music is that it doesn't have to be complex to be beautiful and meaningful. Even plucking one or two notes can bring such satisfaction with the lovely tone of the harp. Keep up with reaching for those goals and enjoying the journey. I'm happy to have you watching my videos and commenting too - thank-you! xx

Thank you Christy. We all have our crosses to bear. I was always a very high energy person so it never occurred to me that I would become chronically ill one day. I never had any desire to play the harp as I was busy raising 4 daughters, working, running my own handmade soap business, raising goats and chickens, etc. Then one morning at the end of December 2008, I woke up and for some reason I felt I had to learn to play the harp. I have no idea why as it had never crossed my mind before. Perhaps it was in preparation of what was to come? Who knows? It was the oddest thing. Anyway, I rented a small 27 string harp and off I went. Luckily, I was able to purchase a Triplett Celtic II harp before I had to leave my job in 2014, so I am blessed that I at least have a harp of my own and my husband doesn't mind paying for my harp lessons and my sheet music addiction! LOL!!!

Well, I think I’ve actually watched this video at least 10 times and it helps me every time and gives me trust. I’ve started playing the harp at the age of 30 (actually 2 years ago) after 20 years dreaming of it and if I can make progresses, it’s also because there is people like you to prove that there’s not just one way to learn the harp but it’s always possible to reach our dream, no matter how old we are and if we have lessons once a week in music school or if we learn by ourselves. I’m really thankfull for your channel and hope we can communicate in the virtual harp circle as soon as possible! Thank you very much Christy-Lynn!

I actually started playing the harp three weeks ago with a rather difficult past concerning learning an instrument. I tried the violin, piano and flute but always stopped after a few months because my expectations were too high and I slowly lost my motivation when realising that playing an instrument takes a lot of time. Now I´m 17 and decided to try it one more time, with the harp, after setting myself realistic goals. This video encouraged me even more and I´m really thankful for that. My L&H Ogden will arrive tomorrow and I think it´s finally the right time for making music instead of just listening to it. Thankyou again ;)

But when I entered the convent I did not have a good harp. I have not played for more than 50 years. I had bad habit of curling. Never taught then right way. I feel like a real beginner. But my teacher is so patient. Now I am learning to do thumbs up finger on the strings. Slowly what I learned as a young girl is now coming back. I love playing now. Sometimes we wait for life to be all lined up and perfect before we do the thing we want the most. But you are right. Life will never be all lined up and perfect. Sometimes we just have to move ahead, and not guilt ourselves because we’re not “good enough“ to .deserve it.

The humility piece got me. We never had enough money to go after non-school based arts hobbies or sports, so I never asked to learn. As a kid I was never good at the instruments that I tried to learn via school, and so as an adult that has me dreading not knowing how to do it! But you're right, learning is enough. Having humility is important. There are so many things in life that are not instant gratification! Thank you for your inspiration. I'll be 30 this year, and I'd love to give it a try. XO - Alexandra

I want to start too, I'm 18. But I don't even know how to read music properly, is it going to be very hard? I have a good tone tho, and sometimes I can hear and play in the piano without knowing the notes, I wanted the harp because my perception of it is that you go more for the tone of the melody you're trying to make, not really for the exact and strict notes as piano and guitar.. that's why I wanted the harp. • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад +3

Hi again! The first step is to rent or purchase a harp. I'm not sure where you live - it might be possible to rent a harp which will help you to figure out if you'd like to purchase your own. Otherwise I would recommend purchasing a Harpsicle (preferably the Fullsicle model) from Rees Harps. They are good value for money, and a smaller investment when you are starting.
The next step is to start learning! I would strongly recommend taking harp lessons from the beginning rather than teaching yourself, because harp technique is counter-intuitive and it's easy to develop unhelpful habits that can be really difficult to break and hold you back from progressing. Weekly harp lessons can cost anywhere between $40 - $80 for an hour lesson, but it's really worth the investment in the beginning because it sets you on the right track and prevents a lot of frustration along the way. If you don't have a harp teacher in your area, Skype lessons are a great option! Send me an email and I will send you a document which helps you to figure out what you are looking for in a teacher.
Also - I give Skype lessons and always start with a free Skype consultation :) Pop me an email and we can chat more!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this. I really enjoy your videos and I found this one to be quite timely. I am in my 50's and play guitar and a few other instruments including voice, but I finally acquired a Harpsicle last week and took my first lesson on Monday. The day I bought my instrument was the first time I laid hands on a harp. I played some simple songs right there in the store. (Okay, very slowly and with a few mistakes and incorrect hand positioning lol) The day I took my first lesson I got to sample some other quality instruments. Now I know why harpists own more than one! Ah...goals! Anyway, thanks again for your encouragement and for sharing your gifts! 🎵

really needed this, I've been wanting to learn how to play the harp since I was little and saw harpists on TV, and then when I got older and started getting interested in celtic/folk music. it's something that's always been a part of me, like I feel there's a harpist in me that wants to come out. But I've never had the courage to ask my parents (who always struggled financially) to allow me to take lesson or rent/buy a harp.
I'm in university now and fees are high, I asked my parents if I could take lessons but they cannot afford them, nor a harp. plus, next year I'll have to go study abroad (I study japanese culture and language so that's a must for my education) and I just can't ask them to pay for that, my uni fees and a harp.
I'm already 22 and I'm afraid I'll never get to learn now, since my priorities have to be on my studies.
but as you said, it's never to late. maybe in 2 years or so I will finally have the opportunity to learn. thank you Christy-Lyn! keep it up with the awesome work :D

Thank-you so much for taking the time to tell me your story, Alessandra. It means so much to know that this video has encouraged you. I am actually glad that I only started learning harp after graduating and starting my first job, because it meant that I never felt like my harp playing was a chore or something to feel guilty about because of struggling to find the time - I just loved every minute! If you have a day job after university you will hopefully have more time in the evenings and week-ends and you'll hopefully be able to save for a harp and afford lessons. Keep the dream alive, and let me know when you are finally able to start!

I just wanted to jump in here Alessandra, and say that I began learning the harp when I was your age, on a terrible cheap Middle East made harp that was $100 on eBay. 😂 those I do not recommend, but just wanted to pass on some encouragement that there are very affordable options out there for trying the harp, for example Waring Harp kits, which I've heard good things about :) (They are actually small harps made of cardboard, believe it or not!) Best of luck, I hope you are able to realize your dream soon, Christy-Lyn is right it's never too late.

@@LearningtheHarp A close friend of mine got it for me for my birthday 😊 so i'm not sure where he bought it from. it's a full-sized celtic harp, and i'm so excited to start learning. i've binged several of your videos the past few days and ordered the method book you recommended! (How To Play The Harp Beautifully)
In high school and the first couple years of college I tried to teach myself to play the guitar, but i've always been very self-conscious and embarrassed to play music in front of other people (even close friends) so i would practice in my room, trying to be as quiet as possible or practice when my family wasn't at home 😆 I learned to play several simple songs, but i always had a hard time with any chords where my fingers had to stretch along a few different frets.
Then halfway through college I bought myself a ukulele (which I love), and I also tried to teach myself with the help of online chords and youtube tutorials, but I still have trouble with the chords that stretch along several frets, not being able to press down evenly to make the right sound. I still play my ukulele casually every once in a while, and have slowly gotten more relaxed practicing and playing through the songs I'm more comfortable with, but it doesn't feel like an extension of me, the way it seems like musicians usually feel.
I've always loved the harp even as a child, because I felt like it was a magical instrument you would find a fairy playing in an enchanted forest, and I've always wanted to be a fairy. But I never imagined it was an instrument I would ever be able to play. About a month ago, I was hanging out with a group of close friends, and just mentioned to my friend Bryan that I love the harp and wish I could play one, and then I jokingly said that if anyone wanted to get me one for my birthday, I would appreciate it. And then just last week, a week after my birthday, he surprised me with a beautiful, magical harp 😭💕
I immediately went into research mode and found your lovely channel 😊 So I have some experience with instruments, and I want to play music, but I've always felt like I wasn't good enough, and am still very uncomfortable playing around other people. But now a harp has fallen into my lap, so I feel like fate has brought me this comforting instrument.
Your channel has encouraged me so much and I haven't even started learning yet. Unfortunately, I can't afford to take harp lessons right now, but I'm going to try my best to teach myself using my method book alongside some youtube tutorials. I'm also planning on purchasing some of your video lessons once I have the basic technique down. I also don't know how to read sheet music, and it seems like reading music is necessary to learn songs on the harp, so I'm going to try to teach myself.
I'm hoping my harp will help me heal my insecurities, and serve mainly as a form of therapy for me, but I would also love to learn some calming celtic folk songs. My career goal is to become a freelance illustrator, so I'm trying to not put too much pressure on myself to be amazing at playing the harp, but instead I want the harp to be part of my spiritual practice.
I'm sorry this was so long wow 😆

Great "Medicare" project to get my brain to learn a new skill. Thank you for this message.
The first time I started playing harp I was 25 years old, too. At the time it felt "too late" to be serious about it, but I was so passionate and obsessed with the harp, I pursued it despite those feelings. I had a wonderful highly trained teacher. I loved it more than I can express.
The problem was, as a pianist, my musical knowledge far surpassed my physical abilities on the harp. And I pushed myself too fast. Practiced for hours every day. And I got seriously and permanently injured. I was devastated.
Over the next 8 years, my injury has flared up any time I have tried to do some gentle practice with "correct" form/technique. I have given up hope, and have been grieving the loss of my dream.
But watching your videos is inspiring me to find a way. Harp is my one true love. Maybe I could modify my LH form, or even arrange certain passages of music to accommodate my limitation. (In a nutshell, I have a restricted ability to raise my left thumb, and pain in my palm if I try to pluck with it at the proper angle).
There are many gifted musicians who played with "incorrect" form for similar reasons... Do you think this is possible for harpists?
If anyone else has read this far, please learn from my mistake. Pursue your dream, but go slow and steady.

And secretly dreaming of one day being able to perform and share the beauty of music with other people.

Christy-Lyn's music z it's had its ups and downs honestly. I work a lot and take care of my dad I practice martial arts and train four times a week. So I'm very busy lol but I love playing the harp much. I've been playing on my harp-sickle my teacher has been encouraging me to get a larger harp and I decided on the Ogden. I'll be getting it this weekend. The truth is some traumatizing things had happened to me during a period with my ex martial arts teacher. I was pretty messed up for a while and didn't know how to pick myself up. I met a girl at a music festival she was playing the harp and I fell in love with the sound and I asked to learn. She's been teaching me a few times a month. Playing helped me Live with what happened and I moved on. The harp has changed me. Life is hard and I've learned a softness from the instrument and I'd like to share it with people. That's all. Overall a good experience.

So far, I've found many of your videos very helpful, and a big part of that has been your positive attitude towards teaching others. Christy-Lyn's music yes, actually! After I finish my internship and work a month or so at a paying job I'll have enough to buy a harpsicle. It'll be a big purchase, but worth it I think. I'll finally honor my childhood wishes!

I can’t remember a time before I wanted to learn the harp, my parents always said it was too expensive so for a long time it’s a dream I set on the back burner. Now I’m 21 and I’m seriously looking into trying to start, I hope I can achieve it

This is so encouraging. I first felt in love with harp was 20 years ago when I was seven. I never forgot it, but ever got a chance. I now live in Toronto and I found a good teacher but I am a little hesitate that it might not be the right time to do it now since I am staring my career just now. Your video really make me want to just follow my heart and go for it. Thanks.

Hi there Li! Have you started yet? Sometimes it's a great idea to just follow your heart and do it now. But other times waiting a few months in the wise choice ;) It's up to you! xx

Never too late, I hope! I just received my new Fullsicle as my "medicare" gift to myself! I"m determined to learn good technique from the start! As a music major/pianist, I don't have to learn all the theory, so I hope to make good progress.

I really like the positive vibes in this video. It made me feel good and also confident. I am about to take up the harp as my second instrument (piano came first 3 years ago) and I am currently 25, as it happens :D! I am training to be a lawyer but my other dream is to become a music teacher. There are not many teachers around here who teach adults alone and I want to dedicate myself to adult students because I want to make them feel like they are in the right place, at the right age and doing just what they ought to :).

I have tried learning to play since 19 years old. My mental health and low self esteem has always stopped me from following my dreams. Now that I am 26 and much more stable (and now on my 4th harp that I refuse to sell this time) I am finally at a place where I feel healthy and confident enough to purse the harp. Thank you for this video. I needed this.

Christy-Lyn, I am so inspired by your videos! I've played Guitar and Keyboards, love the Hammond Organ, played Mandolin and Violin rather unsuccessfully, but I would love get my hands on a Harp and learn how to play it well. You have inspired me to give it a go! It may take a year after this Pandemic is over, but I will continue to watch your videos until I can get my hands on a nice Harp! Thank You!
